Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Eli Swan - 10-05-2016 This house was small. Well, it wasn't really a house, so that certainly contributed to the smallness of it. It was just a flat, really, but Eli was still surprised. It was only a few rooms bigger than his and Angie's flat downtown. The Foxes were rather lower middle class, he supposed, but still. He'd expected it to be bigger. Eli had decided to start here, after he'd checked in with the people organizing this investigation and gotten his little badge to prove he was legitimate. He certainly felt very official, walking around with a badge that gave him a right to be here, in someone else's house. It was a little surreal; usually when he was in someone else's space, that someone had been dead for at least a hundred years first. Not always--he'd gotten sent out to break much more recent curses--but usually. The kinds of wizards who booby-trapped their crypts and graves were also not the type to invite their relations to come take their pick of their prized possessions, in their wills. He wondered idly whether Mr. Lane could change his will around, after they'd figured out who killed him. It seemed like a prudent thing to do, especially if he happened to leave any amount of money to a murderous family member, but Eli wasn't really sure where the line was with legality and ghosts. Eli figured that the place where the ghost had appeared was the best place to start looking for the body, so he'd come here first. Of course the one room was locked, with Mr. Lane's ghost inside, but that didn't bother Eli much--he figured if Mr. Lane's body was in there, Mr. Lane would probably have said something about it. He moved instead through the kitchen, then, finding nothing of interest besides a large collection of knives which looked perfectly capable of killing someone, moved back to the entryway, where it seemed he had been joined by another investigator. "Hullo," he said with a slight smile and a brief hand wave. He felt a little like he'd been caught snooping, even though he was allowed to be here--just the strangeness of being in someone else's house, he supposed. "I hope someone finds the body soon. It'll be devilish hard to say how he was killed without a body, I should think," Eli offered, more just for the sake of making conversation than because he anticipated that there would be any news about the body. The investigation had only just opened, after all. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Billie Breckenridge - 10-05-2016 Her first stop at Threadbare Tailor had left her somewhat disappointed though all the more intrigued. The morbidity of her task was not at all overlooked, however in the process of investigating what had actually led to Mr. Lane's death, Billie couldn't say she wasn't fascinated or even thrilled to figure it out on her own. Of course, the assistance of the other investigators was almost a necessity, and was seemingly the case when she had ventured to Fox Residence. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Eli Swan - 10-05-2016 "Oh, absolutely," Eli agreed eagerly. It was a relief to see that the woman who had entered while he'd been in the kitchen wasn't anyone too intimidating. Some of the folks walking around with investigator's badges just seemed like they might be the judging type, because of how they were dressed and all, but she didn't seem like she would be. He moved from the doorway of the kitchen over to the hallway, glancing around him critically, though he wasn't really sure what he was looking for in a place like this--a spot someone could hide a body, maybe? "It must be really hard on those people who they've got picked out as suspects. Well, most of them, anyway. Can you imagine if someone you knew had just died and then you had to sit around and wait to see if they thought you'd done it or not?" he asked, mostly rhetorically. "That would be pretty rough, emotionally. Though Mr. Fox didn't seem too sentimental about the old man," he remarked, glancing at her with a suggestively raised eyebrow. He'd run in to Mr. Fox when he'd been checking in this morning. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Billie Breckenridge - 10-05-2016 "You are quite right about that. He didn't seem to be the most forgiving type, especially after the ordeal with his son. I know very well the stresses of affording an education and can only imagine how Mr. Fox felt when Mr. Lane had refused to assist." Admittedly, Billie was somewhat angered that Mr. Lane would have done such a thing, though figured he must have had his reasons. For all she knew, Leroy could have been an absolutely terrible man and, accompanied by his devilish son, the decision to prevent his volatile nature to transfer to the castle may have been for the greater good of society. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Eli Swan - 10-05-2016 Eli mused. He tried to imagine what his life might have been like if he'd had some sort of relative or benefactor who would have been able to pay his way to Hogwarts. It would have made for some much more pleasant summers than the ones he'd had playing violin for knuts on the street corners of Hogsmeade, that was certain, but it wouldn't have had much of an effect on his school year. Would he have killed someone to improve the quality of his summers? Hardly. "I think it's strange that they didn't offer the little Fox a scholarship, if he was really too poor to come to Hogwarts. I thought they did that for everyone who couldn't afford to go," he remarked pensively. "I wonder if maybe the money he was asking for was for books and supplies. Or maybe Mr. Fox had money, and recently lost it," he speculated. Looking around the room once again, Eli wrinkled his nose and frowned. "If either of them did kill Mr. Lane, though, they can't be keeping his body here. The whole place is too crowded; it'd be certain to be discovered. They'd have to have moved it somewhere, before the investigation started." He thought a moment. "I don't think the little Fox could have done it. Especially without any magic. Even if he got angry and threw a fit, or something, he couldn't possibly have covered it up this well. Mr. Fox, though--I'm not sure. I think he might have, if his money troubles were substantial enough. If he couldn't even afford to send his son to Hogwarts, I'm sure he had other money troubles, too." RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Billie Breckenridge - 10-05-2016 The man before her seemed quite intelligent to be involved in such a case but. all in all, she was quite glad he was there to accompany her. For without his presence, her mind may have been shut to the plethora of possibilities in regards to Mr. Lane's murder that appeared to be directly laid out in front of the both of them. Billie wanted to take a more direct and up front approach prior and had now realized such was path for certain failure. Solving this case would require wit, restraint, and careful thinking. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Eli Swan - 10-05-2016 Eli nodded along as she spoke, considering everything she said. "Mr. Fox has more than one child," he pointed out, "And Hogwarts is hardly the only thing that costs money. If it was bad a few months ago, it may have gotten worse since then." When she mentioned comparing notes, Eli agreeably pulled out a little notebook that he'd been keeping in his back pocket, along with a tiny nub of a pencil he'd snagged from Gringott's on his way out that morning. It was just more convenient than trying to drag a quill around. "I think Mr. Lane came here to visit, and Mr. Fox asked him for money again," he said, showing her his notepad. "And when things didn't go his way--again--he pulled out his wand and killed him. Not with Expluso, that would have been too messy. We'd find blood if that was the case. It was probably the killing curse," he speculated. "If any of these suspects would use the killing curse, I think Mr. Fox seems the type. What's your theory?" RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Billie Breckenridge - 10-05-2016 Billie nodded as the man went through his theory. She had agreed with a majority of it, though thought she would add her own personal take on the story. RE: Anything Can Be A Weapon [Fox Residence] - Eli Swan - 10-05-2016 Eli glanced at her notes over her shoulder, then grinned as he saw something that caught his eye. Well, he'd certainly have to look in to that... though he didn't feel he necessarily needed to share that detail with his new friend. If they shared everything and discovered the murderer together--well, the Ministry would probably be happy about that, but what on earth would they do with the reward money? "Well, I suppose we'll see which one of us is right," he said with a smile. "I'm Eli, by the way. Elijah Swan." |
