The idea of a woman for Minister—and not a fossil like Madam Flint or Madam Orpington—had breathed a sense of politics into Gwenda that she had never expected. After all, she had been unmarried the last time the Minister of Magic’s seat had been vacated, and as a debutante could hardly been expected to busy her mind with such things. With a ring on her finger, her latest abraxan foal weaned, and no bun yet in her own oven, though, Gwenda Cadwallader had thrown herself wholeheartedly into Mrs. Brownhill’s campaign.
Smartly dressed in brown—she did love a good bit of wordplay, and was supporting Brownhill, after all—with a sensible, woollen cloak adorned with a campaign button to fight against the damp December day, Gwenda stood quite boldly outside the House of Lytton, gaily handing pamphlets to those that entered and left the premises regardless of their sex. Women, after all, had a different power to their male counterparts: the power to influence their husbands, so long as they were well-matched.
“Eleanora Brownhill for Minister!” she chirped brightly, gloved hand handing her leaflet to the nearest passer-by.

Accustomed though she was to a reasonable degree of public notoriety – all positive of course, her family were far from barbarians – Penny had not anticipated that being courted by anybody at all would have made her such fodder in Witch Weekly. Of course she had never exactly anticipated being courted by a man as famous as Marcus was but still, there were lines of decorum and commenting upon her height was just petty nonsense.
She also did not appreciate appearing in the same edition as Herschel Dawlish but he had at least given her a springboard for a deeply amusing luncheon with Marcus in which they had summarily mocked every candidate except for the one they had, curiously, agreed upon quite easily. To the best of her knowledge men and women did not discuss politics: certainly mama and papa did not and she had never so much as heard Freddie broach the subject with Eva or any of his sisters, and so she had assumed it was another of the invisible but tangible divides between the sexes. As with many things Marcus had wafted it aside without the slightest hesitation given.
Had her chaperone not been eying them from nearby Penny thought she might have kissed him for that alone. And again when they stood outside the House of Lytton and made the sort of formal goodbyes that made them both smirk.
Walking away, several steps in front of her chaperone, she was taken aback by a cheerful voice and something being handed to her that, on instinct, she took. Once the words registered though she arched an eyebrow, lips twitching as she looked up at Mrs Cadwallader.
“You might be better served saving this for somebody with an actual say in proceedings.”

“Everyone has a say,” she argued cheerfully, “just some less direct than others.”
It was not the first time today that this had been pointed out to her, and Gwenda had had time to work on her reasoning.
“If you become informed upon the subject, you might tell one of the gentlemen in your acquaintance—” while she was herself acquainted Lady Penelope, it was not nearly so familiar a relationship that the brunette would be comfortable being more specific “—your thoughts on an admirable candidate such as Mrs. Brownhill, and that might inspire them to cast their vote in a direction which they had not previously considered!”
The only direction worth voting in, if one were to ask Gwenda, but given her historical ignorance of politics, few people would unless she forced them to.

The cheerful rebuttal was tricky to mount a defence against. She had a feeling that no matter what she said Mrs Cadwallader was the sort who would merrily disagree and go her own way regardless: optimists were truly impossible to comprehend sometimes. Still, she found the other woman entertaining enough and until her next excursion with Marcus she would have precious little diversion so she might as well make the most of it.
“And what makes Mrs Brownhill quite so admirable?” Penny glanced down at the leaflet and discerned very little. Mrs Brownhill, as far as she knew, had some extremely worthy opinions about the plight of the lower classes but Penny would hardly call that enough to earn her the top job at the Ministry.
