Oooohhhh that despicable Barnabas Skeeter, what did he know of what she was going through her mind? Through her heart?! How dare he, that snake! With everything that had been going on between them, Amelia was absolutely finished with him and then also not. Her mind told her to stay with him - be with him and support him. Her heart told her to run. Run far away. Both would not shut up, and so Amelia did the only thing she thought would make her anxiety shut up. She drank.

Surprisingly, for as small as she was, it took an enormous amount of liquor for her to get to where she wanted to be - free, careless and not thinking about Barnabas bloody Skeeter. It was easy enough to sneak a bottle of her uncle's liquor up to her room – she just created a duplicate of the bottle and used aguamenti to make it look like it was vodka. Truly she had no idea what she'd drank. It tasted absolutely terrible, but made her feel quite delightful and light as a feather. So light, that she decided to go and take a walk! Ooooo, or a flight about Padmore Park seemed ideal.

Luckily for her at the time, she was too far gone to gather her magic to transform, so she decided to simply go for a walk. And Merlin be damned if she went with a bloody chaperone, she didn't need one! She could perfectly take care of herself, despite what he might think. It was late – not quite midnight, for she could still make out the sun's very very last rays – and she found herself in Padmore Park and not a soul in sight. Humming to herself, she walked through the park, running her hands across the flowers, enjoying the tickle they provided in the palm of her hand.

"Howw looovely...." she sighed to herself, warm and happy. The park was so beautiful, with bright beautiful orbs floating up and down. One even tried to follow her! She batted at it with her hands and when it refused to leave her, she poked it away before a giggle escaped her lips and she darted away from it. Of course, being rather uncoordinated in her state, she tripped and fell into a flower bed. Oh dear. No matter, it didn't hurt!

She figured she should make her way over to that bench over there - it wasn't a far trip, and she was feeling sleepy. It looked perfectly comfortable! And of course it was, when she got over to the bench. First, she leaned against it properly, her head tilted towards the sky. It was so pretty, the stars twinkling at her like they were laughing along with her thoughts. She was completely content to stay there and stare at the stars, but her orb friend had followed her to the bench. "Oooohhh, go away you pesky thing," she said, pushing it away weakly. Of course it stayed, though. "Go awayyyy, please!"

No such luck. Amelia pouted. "Fine! Stay there if you want. Stay there and I hope you enjoy yourself, sir. Now if you'll excuse me, I have some important business to see to." Sighing, she flopped onto her side; now this felt better. She found she could easily drift off in peace if she just could close...her...eyes....

Barnabas didn't have his window shutters open often during the winter, but this evening after pacing and fretting about (which he had done almost every evening for the past month), he had heated his room up so well that one would have thought he'd had the fireplace at full capacity. In reality, it was just a dull red glow from the ashes - still, it was too warm. He wiped sweat from his brow and shoved the shutters open, cursing women and love and Shakespeare in the process.

His view of Padmore Park had served him well - or perhaps not so much, depending on one's view point - as he'd had a clear view of the troll attack that past summer. It was the time of day that he expected to find the park deserted, but there was a single, small form on one of the park benches, lit helpfully by one of the orbs. He thought it looked familiar, but then scolded himself. Of course it wasn't Amelia. Just because there was a small woman in view didn't mean she was Amelia. Get it together, man.

It was a little odd and with some concern, he looked about to see if there was anyone else with her. A companion, perhaps. Seeing no one, he resigned himself to throwing on his cloak and going out to investigate. Amelia's horrifying hypothetical story replayed itself in his mind as he did so.

Once he approached her, he realized that either a) he was crazy and was mentally making this woman like more and more like his beloved or b) this actually was Amelia. Lumos cleared up that he wasn't crazy, though he felt horror rather than relief. What was she doing out here like this? He could smell liquor on her. Amelia didn't even drink! Or did she? He'd assumed that she didn't, at least. She certainly would never have deliberately put herself in such a vulnerable position, lying out here in the park like this.

"Amelia!" He exclaimed as he rushed over to her, giving her limp form a once over to see if there were any obvious injuries, "Amelia, wake up! What's happened? Are you hurt?"

She was having one of the most wonderful dreams. Something about being in a bed of flowers in a boat that was floating lazily down the river. "How odd," she mumbled to herself, staring around the stream.

What was this? What annoying voice had woken her from her beautiful slumber? It sounded familiar, though she ignored it, shifting her body position a tad, because her bed was oddly uncomfortable. She quietly groaned, sighing contentedly where she was and mumbled, "Not now please, I'm quite comfortable without anyone bothering me thank you very much."

At least she could speak, though it was obvious that she was completely out of it. He hoped it was just a mere matter of her being drunk (the reason of which was still a mystery). He didn't know whether he should take her back to her aunt and uncles or to the hospital. Had she been hexed? She didn't seem to be injured, at least.

"Amelia," He squat down so that he was closer to her face, hopefully if she opened her eyes she'd see him and get some sense back into her, "Wake up, darling. have you been drinking?" He needed to get her up and quickly, before anyone else saw her. Or worse, him. People would jump to conclusions and blame him for her current state. But first, he needed to know where exactly he ought to take her.

Her brows furrowed as she opened an eye and saw who it was. Groaning, she reached out a hand and bat pathetically at his face. "Go away, Barnabas," she said, her voice more so sleepy than filled with malice. "your voice is incredibly annoying." She wanted to roll over and be left in peace, dammit! Why couldn't she have that?

If he hadn't been so concerned with her well-being, he would have scowled. Instead, his lips twisted into a vague grimace. With his face this near to hers, he could definitely smell the vodka on her breath. Was she really just drunk then? His Amelia? It just seemed so out of character for her. What had driven her to this? (He was in denial that it had anything to do with him.)

"Amelia," He said sternly, attempting a different tactic by speaking slowly, "Have you been hexed? Do you need to see a healer?"

Though her eyes were closed, she rolled them in their sockets. If she was hexed, she would have an anomaly on her person, wouldn't she? Or groaning in pain? Well, she was groaning in pain right now, but it certainly wasn't because she got hexed. Best sit up and let him know she was alright, else he'd keep pestering her until she gave him the correct answer.

"I am fine," she mumbled, righting herself on the bench. "Just drank too much." She tilted her head back so she could look at the stars, only to have her vision obscured by the orb again. "If you would be so kind as to get rid of this pesky thing I would greatly appreciate it."

She held a hand up to the orb to push it away, only to have it drift back again. She giggled. The warm tingling feeling was still in her palms and she touched them to Barnabas' face. "Feel my hands, they're all warm!"

Oh thank Merlin, it wasn't anything overly serious. Granted, being drunk in public at a late hour wasn't exactly care-free, but it was a better alternative than the other things that had been running through his mind. Now the next question was, what was he to do with her? Was it safe to apparate her back to her aunt and uncles? He didn't think he'd be able to support her weight to walk her there, especially if her balance was skewed (which it undoubtedly was.) If he were to -

His thoughts were interrupted the shock of her bare palms on his cheeks. They felt cold to him, but he decided it pointless to argue with her. Why the devil didn't she have any gloves on? Normally, he would have found the gesture romantic. However, if the situation between them was to be considered, it was simply uncomfortable. She would be so embarrassed come morning. He hoped for her sake that she didn't remember any of it.

"Amelia," He repeated patiently, "We need to get you home. You shouldn't be out in public like this." He glanced around nervously. She would be humiliated if word got around about this! Barnabas offered her his arm, "Stand up now, we'll need to walk." He mentally crossed his fingers in hopes that he actually could support her, one-legged and all.

Whilst he was talking, she was rubbing his cheeks absently, staring into his eyes. She didn't really hear what he was saying, but she liked the feel of his slight stubble under her palms.

Ugh, why was he so insistent that he knew what was best for her? She cast him a withering stare. "No, don't tell me what to do." she said defiantly, getting up and attempting to walk away. She would have succeeded, except there was a Barnabas in her way though, and her foot caught on his. Clinging onto him for dear life, she let out a little yelp.

Her refusal caused him to exasperatedly run a hand through his hair. This was going to be far more difficult than he had originally believed. His hand hadn't even hand the opportunity to complete its circuit before she'd toppled against him. Despite being half-prepared for it, he still was unable to counter-balance the sudden momentum. Having one leg put him at a sore disadvantage when it came to trying to fall gracefully.

They tumbled over in a heap, dress and cloak wrapped around limbs and cane. He grunted as her elbow landed in his gut, promptly knocking the wind out of him. Lying flat on his back, arms and legs sprawled out, his breaths came out as wheezes.

He coughed, "Walking isn't going to do it, I think." He wasn't about to attempt to apparate with her. The last time he'd done that he'd splinched Penny's ear - and Amelia had been unconscious. He figured at this rate, she'd flail about and likely lose an arm. She definitely wouldn't forgive him for that. Now what? He struggled to sit up and then realized it was because she was lying on his cloak.

Aaannnddd down they went. Though she thought it could potentially be fun, she found out eventually that it was just painful. A flash of white crossed her vision as she hit the ground – felt her elbow collide with something soft. Soon she realized that that something was Barnabas. "Oh dear, I'm so sorry!" she said, trying to suppress the giggles that were threatening to surface. She pouted at his pained expression, placing her hands on his face again. "Merlin, I didn't realize I could hurt you that much!"

Tucking her knees under her, she looked around. "Hmm, where are we?"

Drunk Amelia was quickly going from concerning to irritating. It had been very irresponsible of her to put herself in such a position. He still had no idea how she's managed to get out of her house like this. Hadn't anyone seen fit to stop her? Granted, it was likely that her aunt and uncle weren't even awake at this hour. They would have no idea that she'd even left the house. It was unlikely that they would find his letter of her whereabouts until the next morning. What in the world was he to do with her until then?

Her cold hands on his face made him jump. Merlin, she was very touchy-feely! He took her hands in his and gently pulled them away. Once she sat up (giggling, of course she was giggling), his cloak was freed and he was able to do the same.

"We're in the park, darling," He said frankly as he looked about for his cane. Ah there it was, it had fallen within arm's reach. He awkwardly shifted his weight onto it and stood. Anxiously, he offered her his hand and prayed that she wouldn't topple them over again. Damn it what was he going to do with her?! There was only one thing he could do. They'd have to hope that nobody would see them. His part-time housekeeper wasn't scheduled for the next morning

He had no idea how she'd react to the idea of staying over at his house without a chaperone, but there was really little that could be helped until she sobered up a little. He hardly trusted her to floo back to her home in such a state. It was the best idea he had - hell, it was the only plausible idea he had. Merlin save them both.

Her face fell as he took her hands away. Why'd he do that? She liked the feeling of his stubble underneath her hands. It tickled! The warmness in her palms was fading, and fading fast. It didn't help that a sudden gust of wind blew through the park. It was then she realized she had no cloak on, and wrapped her arms around herself. "In the park?" she said, unfolding her legs and standing up. The small orb floated towards her, and she poked it, giggling again.

Perhaps she could catch it! Lunging for the orb, she managed to get her hands around it and she spun back around to meet Barnabas. Another wind gust blew towards their direction and she shivered. "I should have brought a cloak," she said matter of factly, though aside from the shivering, she didn't seem to think much of it.

"Oh! Here," He unfastened his cloak with one hand and handed it to her, cheeks flushed. With her carrying on about how warm she was, he hadn't realized that she may have needed his cloak. Granted, with the amount of alcohol in her system, he likely needed it more than she did. It was no matter. He was a gentleman and he really ought to have offered it to her in the first place.

He blinked at the orb in her hands exasperatedly and then attempted to bat it out of her grasp, "You can't take that with you, Amelia." He certainly didn't want the thing in his house - if it could even go that far from the park. He began to shuffle in the direction of his home, hoping that she'd just follow along like a lost puppy.

He started as a sudden thought struck him, "Did you leave Penny at home?" Penny would never have left her side if she'd gone out with her. Had something happened to her? He ran a hand through his hair. How the heck did one go about finding a lost dog? Amelia (once sober) would be distraught!

Another pout crossed her face as he tried to take the orb away from her. She was about to protest, but she also didn't want the orb to be taken away from it's home, so she let it go, pushing it in the right direction and waving at it as it floated serenely away.

She was in quite a contented state when he bombarded her with yet another question. "Of course I did!" she chirped, beaming at him, heading in his direction. "I wanted to be alone and think, and I didn't want Penny to be with me, so she's on my bed asleep no doubt." At the mention of sleep, Amelia let out a yawn. Merlin, what time was it? She rubbed her eyes, which had started to feel very heavy, and leaned her head against his shoulder.

Barnabas grunted unhappily. He had a sinking suspicion that she'd gotten drunk because of him. What else would she have had to be alone and think for? It never occurred to him that she may have had other things going on in her life that didn't revolve around him. He'd learned early on that Penny was an animal and didn't have any special human-understanding capabilities. He still couldn't help but begrudge her for letting Amelia out on her own. Unless Amelia had snuck out, which would account for quite a bit.

The weight on his shoulder was unexpected, but not entirely unwelcome. He wrapped his free hand around her waist and marched her toward his house. Meanwhile, his mind whirled of whether he ought to tell her his plans to write her aunt and uncle or to just lead her to his home. It was probably better to prepare her, drunk or no, than just spring it on her.

"You should know that we're headed to my house," He tried to hide the nervousness he felt about the whole thing - it was so improper, "We need to get inside." Away from prying eyes. "I'm going to owl your uncle so that he knows where you are." And hopefully won't jump to the assumption that he had taken advantage of her.
