September 1st—Staff RoomIt was mid-morning, now, and in a few short hours the echoing halls of Hogwarts would be filled with the laughter (and occasional tears) of countless students back from their summer holidays, and new youngsters eager to explore all that the castle had to offer. Full as the school would be, though, the numbers would be smaller with the ban on halfbreed students—one that sucked innocent, often poorer bystanders in as well. It was a ban that did not sit well with Hamish, nor with some of the prefects he had spoken with a few days prior.
But he was an old man and they children, and while their voices were loud, they were not loud enough. Perhaps, with luck, he might find support amongst his colleagues. Or so he hoped.
“…dreadful news about the poor Urquart girl,” he agreed with a sympathetic nod. “I teach both of her sisters—of all the families for it to happen to! But Miss Urquart won’t be the only one to rejoin us this year. A favorite of mine—” Hamish was past the age where he could be scolded for having favorites “—Miss Flynn couldn’t procure the necessary documents, and I assure you she is not the only one.”
He had seen the roster himself that morning. It was not a pretty sight.
Open to up to 3 other members of staff. EXCEPT PHINNY. 2/2 rule.

Violet sat beside the hearth, her lips pursed in a cat-like manner and nodding off as she always seemed to do. Lately she'd been overtired, what with writing and all. Not to mention the fact that the news had put her off, especially her appetite. All this drabble about werewolves and halfbloods; a part of her fed into the fear of an epidemic, but she felt her old, dusty heartstrings tremble at the idea of losing students, especially those who were so invested in learning and growing.
"Yes," she said, nodding slightly as she unsheathed those large eyes of hers, "poor thing. No child should have to endure such barbaric treatment," she of course didn't even reference the fact that the small girl was attacked by a creature, she was more concerned of the news coverage. She didn't even bother reading whatever venom Barnabas Malfoy spewed out onto the Prophet.
"A shame, really," Violet sighed, "for a girl, let alone her family and father, through such misery."
Professor Wiltingham is a severe old lady with an unfortunate desire to say what is
on her mind, though one must credit that to her age. She uses a cane to walk, and
should you require a bit of extra-credit, one must simply persuade her with sweets.

’Very well said’ Meserimus herumphed, the old pureblood was not an obvious candidate for halfbreed supporter, ’It’s not like there aren’t enough dungeons in this old building that could have made her safe through the year’ he mused. He liked the Urqart girls, they had been pleasant beings, not that he had had much dealings with them, his own house tended to attract – well a certain sort. ’The Ruskin girls too,’ he added, filling his pipe with a rather strong tobacco blend and lighting it with a prod of his wand.
’The older one, the Ravenclaw, she was a bright thing, quiet but bright’ he observed, ’I can almost understand Miss Urqart, from a safety perspective, but the Ruskin girls were a threat to no one.’ He didn’t either girl was especially ambitious, one was clever, the other made little or no impression on him, other than her presence in his class, but they certainly weren’t mercenary or aggressive young ladies. If he hadn’t known they were part vampire he never would have guessed.

Though she often secluded herself from the rest of the staff, with the exception of those others like her who were not professors and Barrett who didn't count as one in her mind, Connie tried to make the effort with the beginning of each new term to actually engage with her colleagues. It wasn't that she didn't like them - with the exception of the headmaster she found them all agreeable enough - but the difference in their positions at the school did often leave her feeling rather like a silent cog: functional enough in purpose and required to keep the machine turning but not something one thought about as long as it continued to work.
However, the upheaval that had plagued the summer months, terrible though it was, was also proving to be quite the unifier amongst them. The one thing they all did was care for the students and the loss of some of their charges would effect each and every one of them. Although it had to be said that her own house had probably suffered the least, which Connie did not find overly surprising even if it was enough to make her question her house loyalty.
"At least Miss Urquart has her family to care for her, she's not likely to want for bed and board but some of the others will never be able to support themselves now," she offered, doubting very much the money that went towards funding the education of those without was to be redistributed to ensure they did not starve.

“Too right,” he agreed sadly with the Slytherin matron. “The Ruskin girls, too, will be fine, though I wager that Miss Crystal Ruskin will be missed from my own common room, but some of the students simply caught up in the matter, whose humanity is all but certain, have been cast out too! I am not one to criticize the Governors—” well, not publicly, at any rate “—but I cannot help but worry they have behaved too rashly in this.”

Connie had felt the need to question the governors of Hogwarts more or less since she had first arrived in a professional capacity but she was hugely, bitterly, aware that her position barely afforded her an opinion, let alone the potential to influence change. Keeping her mouth shut was all she could do, but Connie doubted even men like Professor Darrow could do much even if they wanted to.
"A sad state of affairs indeed," she commented, deliberately avoiding offering any thoughts about the governors and, inextricably, the Headmaster.

Meserimus nodded in agreement and puffed his pipe as the Slytherin Matron spoke. While the exclusion of those considered ‘dangerous’ could almost be justified on the basis of keeping the other children safe, it was the little ones without family that were the saddest cases of all. The little orphans, or which there was more than one, that could barely prove that they had been born at all nevermind trying to prove that they had families which were entirely human. It was frankly ridiculous in his view.
’and is there nothing to be done?’ Meserimus said, dropping his chin and looking at the deputy head as though he were looking over the tops of imaginary glasses. ’I know Phineas is a stickler for things like this, but there must be some way the ministry can intervene. Surely it is dangerous to prevent young people from learning to control their magic’ he herumphed, his pipe still hanging from the corner of his mouth ’I wouldn’t be surprised if we see incidents of accidental magic increase if this goes on for long.’
