Mommy's Home - Nikolai Sleptov - 03-20-2017

March 19th, 1887—Written entirely in Russian

My most dear Eva,

I write to you myself for I fear Mrs. Sleptova will not, as she finds you rather intimidating. I tell you this because as a woman soon to be a wife, I trust you are mature enough to keep this information in confidence.

Mrs. Sleptova tells me in her latest letter that she will, at last, be returning home to Hogsmeade, her husband, her son, and her beautiful stepdaughters. She is to be expected in only a fortnight, and will be bringing with her many gifts and trinkets from Russia, as well as a new, Russian-speaking lady’s maid with whom I think she will be much more comfortable. I would not want her sudden appearance in our home to startle you, as forewarned is forearmed. Not, of course, that you shall need to do battle with Ustinya!

I hope dearly that you are well, and that Aunt Yulia takes good care of you. I also have something of a surprise for you, but I think that I shall reveal it myself, in person. If I were to come home to visit on Sunday next, would your schedule allow you to spare an afternoon for your loving father?

With deep affection,
Father

Also in Russian.

Dearest Papa,
I must admit that at first I did not know who was this Mrs. Sleptova you were referring to. It's been such a long time since this house had its mistress that I'd forgotten it even had one. Then again, your wife has always been the quiet and mousy sort - to find me, intimidating! Why, do I look like the Baba Yaga and she finds me so scary?

That being said, it is thoughtful of you to inform me, for, as I explained above, if I stumbled upon her I wouldn't know who it was I am facing. Other than that, you are right that Mrs. Sleptova and I will have no reason to battle. As you've already probably understood, I barely think about her at all.

On to more interesting matters - what is this surprise you are talking about? Ihope that I will not have to confess to Father Simeon again.
Yours,
Eva

My most dear Eva,

It pleases me to see that you have kept your good humour in spite of my absence from the house. I would recommend that you rein it in somewhat before your stepmother’s return.

I assure you that this is a much better surprise much less traumatizing a surprise you enjoy. To that end, I shall not ruin it by divulging the secret here. Does Sunday suffice?

With deep affection,
Father

Dearest Father,
Don't you worry, I don't usually bother with humour around those that I know to lack it.

As for your surprise, Sunday works for me! I hope, for your sake, that it is actually a good surprise and not you being like most fathers and getting me excited for something boring and silly.
Love you,
Eva

My most dear Eva,

I don’t know what I did to deserve such an ungrat
