All right, so Grania here was originally Grania Taylor; when she was seven her mother remarried and changed all her daughters' surnames to her new husband's surname, Sheehan. When she starts her career, Nia wants to either return to her birth surname or hyphenate.
So, two parts. Part one is the poll. Which surname should she go with? This is something where I might not end up going with the top poll choice, but where the input will be very helpful.
Second part -- now or later? It has occurred to Nia that if she switches names now, her NEWT results will have the proper surname on them. Any thoughts/opinions on this? The pros to waiting are that there's a nice clean break between "school" and "work" where she could switch.
THANKS!

Voted Taylor. She should never have been a Sheehan to begin with.
No preference on when but if you do it now, make sure you emphasize the confusion at school etc.
if I could marry Bee I would but I can't so I ship our characters instead.

Whee, I can actually sort of help with this because I had surname issues with my GCSEs. I was legally enrolled in school and all legal documents under one surname, however I had a preferred surname that was the only one most teachers were aware of. Because there are three stages to exams in Britain, being enrolled, the actual exam and the name on the certificate, all three of the names need to match up and we had to get me legally adopted so no teachers would accidentally enter me in my exams under the wrong surname and therefore invalidate my exam results (you can get this rectified, but it takes months and costs loads).
Basically, as OWLS/NEWTS are going by the British system, I assume it'd work the same way and that Grania's surname during the exam (and therefore on the certificate) would have to be the one she was entered for the exam under, which is normally done about six months before the exam. In theory, if Grania wanted her NEWTS in the name of Taylor, she'd have to use that surname through her seventh year and be entered as a Taylor, or pay and get proof of identity etc to get them transferred after the results come out (which is really a pain because technically you then have no qualifications until the process is done and therefore schools/jobs can't count you as qualified to start them and blegh, that nearly fucked over my sixth form entry. You also need legal proof of a change of name to do this 99% of the time).
If she did get her NEWTs in the name of Taylor either by entering them as a Taylor or by paying to get them changed, it would also potentially invalidate her OWLs because those are (presumably) under Sheehan and she would no longer legally be a Sheehan- or she'd be considered to have her OWLs but not her NEWTS because the NEWTs are for a Grania Taylor, if she would still legally be a Sheehan. It all depends what legally she'd be registered as (not her preferred surname) and how much she is willing/able to pay.
TLDR: British bureaucracy knows no bounds and changing your name whilst doing exams if a fuckload of hassle unless you're willing to pay through the nose.

OKAY WITH LOTS OF MATH AND CBOX DISCUSSION
The Taylor children were adopted by their stepdad. This took all his savings, so when he got sick the family fell to LC.
It's going to cost Nia roughly 4s 2k to register her name change. I like round numbers so like 4s?
Then ... would the ministry charge at all for switching the name on her exams? Or more than another pittance? Because apparently part of the reason it's so expensive to get them switched RL today is because the records are ALL OVER and the wizarding world has nicely centralized records.
So IN THEORY she could register a name change this summer, get her OWLs switched over, and then her NEWTs would already be in the name Grania Taylor.

Changing names won't hurt qualifications, if so, married women wouldn't have any, but they do. I'm with Kayte in the fact that her surname should have always been Taylor. I have issues with women getting married and forcing their children to take their new husband's surname, or alternatively the stepfathers demandig it. And most people I know, unless legally adopted and/or view their stepfather as their dad, don't really like their new surname and by their father's name still. And I'm ranting now; but information.
Plus I don't think it's entirely period appropriate, I don't know of any cases where children's surnames have been changed upon the remarrying of their mothers.

Changing your name via marriage is one of the exemptions in RL seeing as your exams are in your legal maiden name, and so still you!

I quite agree with all of this; I'm not the one who decided on the situation. XD Keeping it as the surnames being changed rather than retconning anything is what worked out best for Soph & I to both keep aspects we wanted, so it happened. And IC Nia's not happy/comfortable with it, so she wants to change back.
Re:qualifications, Jenny I think some of the ??? over everything is that over here if you change your name for any reason, you don't have to do anything extra to still have qualifications/degrees. The whole problem about changing her OWLs to her new surname wouldn't exist in the US because Grania Sheehan & Grania Taylor are the same person.

Plus it was the VE, so handwritten everything and blah blah blah - despite magic.
I agree with this except on ONE issue -- Jenny said that the GSCE records are kept 101 different places, and even if that's an exaggeration and Emily is bad at telling that sort of thing the OWL records are kept in one spot, so there is some difference.
