Ever since she was just a little girl, Elvera Potter had always been relativly good at her work and studies. She had been taught as a child by a tutor that her parents sent El and her elder brothers, and by the time she was eight she had the tutor all to herself, and often took advantage of what she could learn. Her mother told her how important it was to be educated, and that she should study while she had the oppotunity.

Seven years later, her mothers words still rang in her head, which was what brought her here, to the History of Magic classroom. As a fifth year she was due to be taking her OWL exams soon, and Elvera wanted to be as prepared as she could. She was sat at the side of the classroom, where when the moment struck her, she could turn her head and peer across the gardens below, taking in the beautiful site, and imagining what fun she and her friends could be having out there. Whenever she looked into the gardens, she saw her future. When she was old enough, she wanted to own a house with such stunning grounds, and it was this insentive that brought her back to her dusty leather bound books.

It was an odd occurence, ábut Briar actually enjoyed History of Magic. It wasn't quite as fun as charms and sometimes she felt in danger of nodding off for a bit, but all History was was a story. She supposed that's why she liked it, and she also prided it in being one of her better subjects. Which also added to it's appeal.á

The history classroom was empty apart from another girl and herself. The other girl, who Briar reconized to be in her house and year was sitting beside the window and seemed to be staring out it. á

Seeing as they were the only two in the classroom , Briar thought it would be impolite to ignore her and sat next to the girl.

Elvera had been imagining what her future family would be like. A husband, tall and handsome, who would play with their children in the grounds, a daughter and two sons, much like El's own family were like, with the exception of her mother that is. She heard footsteps behind her, and turned to look down at her study book. She had already scribbled notes at the side in the margin, and she dipped her quill in the ink to scatter some more revision.

After a moment, she looked to her side to see the face whom chosen to take a space beside her. She saw a girl from her common room. El had kept to herself these last few years, and maybe it was time to get out a bit more. "Good morning" she said pleasantly, nodding. "Briar, isn't it?" she asked, recalling the name.

    • "Yes, it is thank you and Elvara, is that right?"

Briar watched the girl, writing in to the margins of her book, curiously. It was clear to her that this girl was a diligent student. Her own book was cluttered with doodles of hearts and spirals. Every now and then you could see the random world scribbled between the lines in a rainbow shape. It held no rhyme or reason. The little blonde flipped her fingers through the pages of her book, then closed it again. She was fidgeting, she realized, in aticipation for something. The girl straitened up and folded her hands neatly on to the desk.á

She thought of what Aunt Emily was often saying about fidgeting, how it was unbecoming and such. She remebered a time when a year ago or so when Auntie had tried to áconduct áa lesson for Briar and Deliah on manners. Auntie Emily was determined to marry the two off to some wealthy Prince, or something. Briar hadn't done too, bad but every time Auntie would turn her back to show the girls how to stand or walk like a lady, Deliah would make a face and the two would burst in to laughter.á

"So do you particularly like this class? "

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them...

    I SUPPOSE IT'S MY DUTY

Elvera smiled and nodded, "Yes. Elvera Potter." she agreed, and glanced down at the student's book, also covered in various doodles and notes. El liked to be neat, although when notes where required it was something she had to do, but she hated to deface a perfectly good book.

"I enjoy learning about this history, yes" she answered, "however it is not my favourite" she confessed. El was taking five different OWL levels this year, and the history of magic was just one of them. "What about you?" she asked in return, "Is this class a favourite, or do you take it because you must?" she asked, aware of sometimes parents would take control of their child's educated. Her own father had made El take Potions, dispite her dispising the subject. She was average at it, although she hated the smells, and was often found pouring the mixtures down the sink.

Of course, El wanted to impress her father, and she always imagined her mother looking down on her and being proud. She didn't want to give her family a bad name. It was almost like her duty to do well in her life, and follow in the steps of her older and successful siblings. El was keen not to slip up, and make a mess at the end of the line.

"I do enjoy it to a degree, History helps us understand more about the present. It was one of my chosen courses, I mean I just think it useful."

Briar thought it an odd thing to ask unless Elvera's classes weren't chosen for herself or she was in someway obligated to take it.á

"So then are you planning for a certain proffesion that requires you to know History?"á

Briar thought it quite admirable if the girl did know her future profession already. She seemed very proper and Briar knew the Potters were a long line of wealthy purebloods so it would even that more impressive if the girl was choosing a profession over marrige.á

Briar, despite her headstrong ways, was unsure if she would rather work or be married. She knew that marrige really only had few to no benifits. Once a woman was married she lost what few rights she had and love in marrige was rare. Briar's own father had proven true love hard to come by. But the girl couldn't help but to be wistful, besides Uncle John and Auntie Emily had been in love and Briar believed that with all her heart.

All our dreams can come true, if we have the courage to pursue them...

    I SUPPOSE IT'S MY DUTY

She nodded, "My chosen subjects were Herbology and Divination, but my father advised me against both. Instead i do History of Magic, Transfiguration, Potions, Arithmacy and Defence Against the Dark Arts." she explained. The last two wern't that bad, and in DADA, it was fun to propell other students across the floor. Elvera was in fact unsure of what she wanted to do. She knew she would need to discuss that with her family too. "I don't want to let the Potter family name be ruined by myself. I may join the ministry like my elder brothers, but to whether that is allowed for a female im unsure" she said quietly. What did she actually want to do? She wasn't sure. She thought about flying, but was definatly sure a quidditch profession would be frowned apon. "I suppose whatever i must do i shall do. If my father wishes for me to marry, and i bare a family then so be it. All i know is that for now i must study, so that when oppotunities do arrive, i may take them" she quietened, the thought that Briar might actually want to work springing into her head. "Do excuse me" she said, dipping her quill back into the ink to continue writing.

After a moment she looked up again, and back out of the window. "Have you ever flown?" she asked, thinking how fun it could be if she found friend whom to have similar things in common with. She might have been educated, although she had always been unsure how to act to fellow students.

Herbology and divination, Briar smiled. It wasn't at all the response she'd expected from such a girl. Briar herself was skilled at niether though she still found them interesting subjects.á

She wondered how different the girl sitting next to her would be if she had been able to live life doing as she pleased. Briar was sure their was more to Elvera than the well mannered girl she seemed to be and just as the thought was flowing through Briars head, it was confirmed further.

"Fly?" Briar tilted her head and sighed. It was a sigh that tasted of beauty and of freedom. It was the same emotions she expierenced when flying.

"Yes, yes I have. It's, It's wonderful. áMy cousin Luther used to let me ride on his broom." áHow she had longed for a broom of her own, but she had never asked. It would have upset Aunt Emily and broom's were an expensive investment, one that wouldn't have gotten much use out of from a young girl who spent her days in school.

Briar focused her brown eyes on to Elvera. "Have you?"

Elvera smiled as she watched Brairs face light up at the thought of flying. These two students prehaps had quite a few things in common, and maybe could learn things from each other. "I have, yes. It's something i never told my family about. I don't want them to stop me. I'm the keeper for the Gryffindor team." she admitted. "I know girls arn't exactly favoured, but i won't let that stop me" she said. "I started riding when i was eight. Not on a broom, but my horse. Turned out i could use a broom much easier though." she said, thinking of her black stallion back at home. She hoped he had gone to a good place. Since they'd moved to Hogsmeade he'd had to move to a muggle family. She'd loved that horse. When Briar mentioned using her cousins broom, Elvera added "When i joined the team my parents bought me a new one. You could have my old one if you want" she offered. It wasn't going to be the best gift of course, but if Elvera could make someone smile she would. "When's your birth date?" she asked curiously.

Briar's eyes widened. She had never known it possible for a girl to play on the quiditch team and the idea amazed her. She felt a strong pulláofáadmirationátorwards this girl who was proving to be much more than just a wellbred name. The whole thing was revolutionary. The young girl felt her sure, stuborn mind being blown away.

The little blond had thought her capability of speech had flown away with the winter wind that terrorized all that lay outside the castle. The idea of a broom of her very own had been nothing more than a pipe dream and now it was within the reach of her pale fingertips. She couldn't believe it, was Elvera really offering her a broom?

"I-I-couldn't accept," a broom was such an extravegent gift and Briar felt torn.á

"I'm sure you'd want to keep it for sentimential purposes if nothing eles!" Briar presented Elvera with a warm smile.

"Oh my birthday is November 27"á
