Waiting on his desk upon his homecoming because she CBA to find an address abroad because she is TOO BUSY SALVAGING HER DAUGHTER YOU ASSHOLE.

MATHIS BEAUMONT, YOU ARE THE GREATEST CAD OF A MAN! TO CALL OFF AN ENGAGEMENT AT ALL IS ONE THING, TO DO SO IN A LETTER ANOTHER—BUT TO ACCUSE YOUR INTENDED OF “BEING DISTANT” WHEN IT IS YOU WHO LEFT THE COUNTRY IS SURELY THE SIGN OF ONE WHO IS LESS THAN A MAN.

YOU DESERVE NOTHING BUT THE UTMOST MISERY AND EVERY INSULT SOCIETY CAN THROW AT YOU—AND SHOULD SOCIETY TURN FROM FLINGING INSULTS TO FLINGING FOUL VEGETABLES, I SHALL COUNT MYSELF AMONG THEIR NUMBER!

    Dear Mrs Pendergast,

While I do apologize for the harm this misunderstanding has caused, I must insist that I am not to culprit behind this mess. The last contact I've had with Miss Pendergast was in late December, and the letter I wrote stated that I would be away for the late winter on business and would return as soon as I could.

I haven't revealed to anyone outside the family what my visit to France was about, but I feel that it's my duty to explain in an attempt to fix what has been wronged.

In late December, my younger cousin under my care—Mr Casimir Babineaux—was kidnapped from the edge of the lake outside my Milford Haven property where he had spent the day collecting stones. A note was left at the scene explaining that he was being taken back to France, where I could pay ransom to ensure his safe return. The kidnapper and I traded notes over the months of January and February before I was able to negotiate a ransom for his return to my care in the middle of March. I hadn't been in contact with your daughter during my visit in France, as I was afraid I would somehow drag her into the mess if I revealed what was happening.

In other words, someone sent Miss Pendergast a letter, but that someone was not me. I had and still have no desire to end my engagement with Miss Pendergast, but it seems that this was a situation that I had no control over. If there was a letter sent to Miss Pendergast declaring that I had no interest in continuing our engagement, why was a letter never returned to me acknowledging it?

I'm extremely sorry for the harm that has been caused by this incident, but I never declared to your daughter a wish to end our engagement. I deeply care about Miss Pendergast and would never wish her such pain and regret.

I do hope to hear from you soon,

    — Mathias Beaumont —

Since his wife and daughter's death on July 17, 1887, Mathias has not left the home and refuses to take visitors. Letters can be sent to him for contact, but there's no guaranteeing he'll write back. He's not eating or sleeping regularly and refuses to leave his son's presence most of the day.

    Mr. Beaumont,

Given my low opinion of you at present, I shall confess I care little over the family circumstances that led to your departure, nor do I possess any sympathy towards your current plight. Your tale is something out of a ridiculous romance novel, and it is only for my daughter’s sake that I will even consider entertaining it as plausible.

With that in mind, it is not me to whom you should be writing but to Miss Pendergast—and in fact, if you have not done so already then I will see my opinion of you plummet even further, a feat that I would not have thought possible!

See to your affairs, Mr. Beaumont, for they seem indeed to have run off without you. I will, as I say, entertain your excuse if it should prove to be to Miss Pendergast’s benefit, but rest assured that you shall wish yourself eviscerated if the matter does not settle in her favor.

    Dear Mrs Pendergast,

While I'm sorry that you may not find my explanation satisfactory, I can only tell you that it is true. If you would have questioned your daughter on the matter, you might of found out that I have sent her a letter in recent days, though I've received no reply. I cannot help if she doesn't want to speak to me, and the decision to do so is solely hers. I do not wish for anyone to force her to reconcile her relationship with me if the situation has left her heartbroken, but I do ask for you to let her know that the situation is out of my hands and that I would gladly take the opportunity to speak with her about the situation if she so allowed it.

I'm sorry that I can't do more that is in the realm of propriety, as I do not believe ambushing her in the streets is something she—or anyone else for that matter—would take kindly to. I truly care for your daughter and wish that I could do more to fix what has been broken, but doing so requires cooperation on both sides.
