    My most dear Ruby,

I pray that this letter reaches your eyes before idle gossip reaches your ears, but I suspect fate shall not be so kind to me today. Thus far, it ‘luck’ has not been on my side.

There is an article in today’s Witch Weekly that connects my name romantically to that of Miss Adelia Lovegood. While I confess to you now that I have begun courting that same young lady, please be assured that every other word printed by that vile rag is definitively untrue. I can say with confidence that no love potion has ever touched my lips, and even if it had, Miss Lovegood’s nature would not allow her to do such a deceitful thing.

An explanation, I know, is owed. I began some months ago—after the vanishing ball—to acquire a stepmother for you and your siblings. Though your mother’s passing remains ever a fresh wound, the thought of leaving any of you without a parent pains me infinitely more. A stepmother would prove very little comfort initially, I am sure, but some sort of guardian (one that would not leave you to overburden your aunt and uncle) would, I felt, most assuredly be better than none.

With the help of my diligent sister and zealous secretary, I met with many potential candidates, but ultimately chose Miss Lovegood as the best fit for our family. I know you will be angry with me for keeping it secret from you, but I did not wish to trouble any of you until matters became serious. Just yesterday, Miss Lovegood and Delight became acquainted, and it is my hope that she may meet you, Topaz, and Sebastian as well—sooner, rather than later.

If my letter was delayed in finding you, I pray that the article did not cause you too much distress. Please know that I love you dearly, and my secrecy was only in the hopes of saving you additional pain.

    With deepest affection,

    Papa

    Papa,

If you didn't wish for any gossip to reach me, you could have told me sooner. Were you afraid that I wouldn't like Miss Lovegood? Well, I don't. I think you dropped something and it is your standards, Papa. Do you prefer ghostly coloured women now? I'll never see that woman as my mother and now I can't help but wonder if I can view you as my father, seeing that you'd much rather you had a family of pale, blonde kids!

    Ruby

    Ruby,

I understand that you must feel hurt, but that is no cause for childishness. I shall always receive your letters, but I would that you wait until you have cooled down a bit to write further. I shall not justify your churlish comments with any further response.

Hand-writing is shaky because she cried as she wrote this. xD

    Minister Urquart,

I have no doubt now that Miss Lovegood has bewitched you. The Papa I knew would be loving and understanding - he wouldn't tell his daughter that she doesn't deserve letters from him! I doubt that there is any point in even writing you, for it isn't my Papa who'd be reading those letters!

If you're so worried about my manners then you should probably reconsider marrying Miss Lovegood. Seeing that I'm so childish and immature, having a mother who uses love potions to get Ministers in her evil web of lies and whose sister gets photographed with her underthngs would only spoil me further! Maybe you should have me sent away to improve my terrible manners! Your new wife will like that and, after your last letter, I'd say you'd like it too!

    Ruby,

I will inquire as to whether Mrs. Swift has room on her roster for additional pupils during the summer months. It is evident now your etiquette instructor at Hogwarts is not doing a thorough enough job.

    Yours,

    Papa

    Minister Urquart,

I have an even better idea: why don't you send me to America, to Mama's family, if you are so keen on getting rid of me? At least then I'd be with people who look like me and love me for who I am and not with a pale and horrible person like you and your future wife!

    Ruby,

The colour of your mother’s skin was irrelevant in my eyes, just as is the case with Miss Lovegood and, in fact, you. I had thought I raised a more concientous child. I am very disappointed, and you may be certain that your mother would be heartbroken to read such callousness, having grown up in a nation where skin colour was an insurmountable obstacle. You should be ashamed of yourself.

As you are so keen to get away from me, you will be pleased to know that Mrs. Swift has agreed to take you on as a pupil three days a week, beginning as soon as you arrive home. Perhaps, though, you are right in that I should send you to America—then you might know what hardship truly is, and recognize how charmed your life has been thus far.

    Father
