    My sweet Topaz,

It is my hope that, while you most certainly have heard by now, it was through your sister—whose letter I sent in advance of your own, in the hopes of sheltering at least one of you—that you learned of the news that I am, indeed, courting Miss Adelia Lovegood, sister to Mr. Orlando Lovegood.

There is an article in today’s Witch Weekly that is correct to connect the two of us

You see, I began some months ago to acquire a stepmother for you and your siblings. No woman could ever hope to fill the void your mother’s passing left in our family, but any security that I could provide you was my desire, my duty, as your father. Both your aunt and my secretary worked hard to find potential candidates, but I pursued Miss Lovegood only after first deciding that she would be a good fit not only for me, but for our entire family.

I did not wish to trouble any of you until matters became serious, for many things might forestall a courtship. Even Delight met her only yesterday, and it was your sister’s consent that I was awaiting before placing the burden of such knowledge upon the rest of you.

I hope that you will forgive this slight against you, but more importantly that you will not allow it to tarnish your opinion of Miss Lovegood before you are afforded even a chance to meet her.

    With deepest affection,

    Papa

    Papa,
Of course I know that it must have been quite a time-consuming and intensive task to find a woman you feel could adequately replace our mother, which is why it is all the more incredible to me that you managed to keep such a large undertaking secret for as long as you did. I am only sorry that you felt you had to do so for my sake, as it sounds rather difficult and unpleasant.

I will have to ask Delight's opinion of her, for I am sure that Delight's opinion will be the authoritative one on the subject. If she has given her consent to Miss Lovegood, of course I am sure neither Ruby or I will find anything at all objectionable about her.
    With deepest affection,
    Topaz

    My sweet Topaz,

You are, I fear, mistaken—for while it would indeed be a time-consuming task to even attempt to replace your darling mother, Miss Lovegood does not measure anywhere close to doing so. I understand why you might be hurt by the fashion in which this news reached you, but I assure you again that it was only my intention to keep it from you so long as was necessary to ascertain Miss Lovegood’s staying power. Why should I trouble you with such serious matters if they do not bear fruit?

    With deepest affection,

    Papa

    Papa,
When you put it that way, of course it makes perfect sense.

Are you still uncertain about Miss Lovegood, or have you determined that she has 'staying power'?

    My sweet Topaz,

I would not have introduced her to your sister were I not confident of this. As I said, I did not wish to trouble any of you with news that might be uncomfortable unless the end result made doing so worthwhile. It saddens me more than you know that the news was leaked in this fashion, leaving me unable to be the one to deliver such important news.

    With deepest affection,

    Papa
