Nicknames: Any shortening of his name since few are willing to say the full three syllables of his first name.
Birthdate: 01 April 1871
Current Age: Eleven years
Occupation: First year student
Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Wand:
+Ancient Oak | For stability and strength.
+8" | Nothing of note with this wand's length
+Unicorn Mane Hair | Despite his convoluted reasoning and self-involved ways, he's rather purist about his ideas. There's a certain grace to his inventions as well as his wandwork. Almost like his wand helps his magic to leave his personal signature in each stroke. His charming is decent, thanks to this thread, though he was decent to begin with given his first stroke of luck with magic.
+Pliable | There really wasn't any congruous reason why his wand could swish and flick with the best of them, perhaps this has something to do with his current impressionability?
Blood Status: Pureblood.
Social Class: Upper.
Family:
Eustace Macnair, Father | 1833 | He never saw any other side of his father than the loving, caring side. If able, Germ does share his personal exploits and inventions with his father, this being the only close relationship Germ has outside of school friends.Mariana Iris Macnair nee Lestrange, Mother | 1840 | She was never around and had little interaction with her throughout his childhood. He recognizes her, but that's about the extent of his feelings towards her.
Valerian Macnair, Brother | 22/1960 | He never knew him - he was nearly grown up by the time he was born.
Agrimony Macnair, Brother | 17/1965 | The twins were troublemakers and kept mostly to themselves.
Betony Macnair, Brother | 17/1965 | The twins were troublemakers and kept mostly to themselves.
Yarrow Macnair , Brother | 15/1968 | They had differing personalities and never looked to each other for friendship/sibling rivalry or much of anything.
Sage Macnair , Brother | 9/1973 | The youngest in the family, Germander has a surprisingly hopeful view of him. He hopes that he lives up to his namesake - being wise or of wisdom rather than the herb. If so, Germ looks forward to intellectual discussions and maybe someone who could review and act like a sounding board for his ideas.
Betrothed: Seneca Bellona Lestrange | He hasn't had too much interaction with her, but knows that he's expected to marry her. His betrothal was discussed with him the night before he left for Hogwarts. For once his temper flared, but it was quiet with more internal seething than anything so brash like a tantrum. The reasoning behind this uncharacteristic fit was that he was being forced to share his life with someone and he had bigger plans in mind; he worries a wife would only slow him down. He doesn't resent Seneca for this and, in fact, hopes to learn more about her to see if she would hinder his future plans.
Appearance:
He's still growing into his height not yet hit his first substantial growth spurt. He weighs about 90 pounds, though he expects to put on weight as he adds to his inches. For now, he has the lean wiriness of a preteen who is too picky to eat more and often forgets to eat his meals unless reminded. With green eyes and dark hair, he looks almost as if he should be a relative of the Potter family, but his stark resemblance to Yarrow is unmistakable. He has a relatively clean complexion and has an unnaturally dark take on life that's often seen in his expression. While he's not against smiling, and those rare true smiles take years off of his age, he rarely sees fit to. Usually he'll give a small twist of his mouth to show personal pride in something he's accomplished. His hair is a bit shaggy, covering his forehead and around his ears and he's rarely bothered to comb it out, letting its natural waves brush his face. He is left-handed.
History:
1871 - 76 | Germander was born. He found comfort in his wet nurse who did not coddle him more than necessary and his father who took joy in his children despite their reclusive tendencies. His mother was often away for one reason or another and had little to do with him. When he'd try to show his parents things he'd done or discovered, he found very little encouragement to continue doing so with his mother, and a little more closeness to his father. His youngest brother was born in '73, but Germander didn't think he was interesting as a baby and kept out of his way until he could hold a conversation with Germ and Germ could determine if their personalities suited.1877-1880 | He'd always been big on getting things done and having his way, but often found it difficult to get things to work the way he wanted to in this world. Namely, he found that everything was built for grownups. This led to the first in a series of inventions and devices. He'd managed most of this with every-day equipment. One, in particular, made his nanny have a fit was when she nearly broken her neck tripping over a small parachute parcel. Germander loved Da Vinci's works and had tried to recreate one of his fly contraptions, but only managed to make something that would float, slowly down, from the upper levels of his home in the foyer. He wasn't perturbed or overly irritated about the failing in his inventions, it was just something to work on since the static toys of the playroom were boring. Germander took to looking at more blueprints (the equivalent of picture books for him since he found the children's novels ridiculous), and struggled to read books beyond his reading comprehension level in hopes that they'd impart knowledge to add to his. On occasion Yarrow would try to hang out with him, but ever engaged in his own world, Germander learned to mostly ignore him. Their personalities rarely suited unless they sat in the library.
1881 | There was worry about his magical ability because he'd never showed any apparent latent or active ability. Usually by this point, a child would have thrown a fit or something they really wanted would've happened suddenly or appeared. Instead, it was an almost unnoticed magical happenstance that showcased Germander's magic - noticed only by a squib maid. One night a maid was cleaning up the children's playroom and had picked up several of his inventions in their varying states of set up. She was shocked when some fell apart, having seemed to be built sturdily. She didn't understand what had happened, but the next morning apologized to Master Germander Macnair who only shrugged at her.
Later that morning, the maid returned to the playroom to find everything back the way she'd found it last night. Knowing that there was no way he'd had enough time between breakfast and when she'd come in to bring in more of his tools from the table, she asked him if he'd used magic to fix them. Germander didn't understand why he was being asked about magic since he didn't have a wand (there must have been a time when his brothers had stolen a wand or something, likely the twins, Germ thought) and hadn't purposefully done anything that he thought was exceptional or magical; he brushed off the maid and the incident. The inventions the maid had piled away were back in their spots from the evening before; he'd managed to unwittingly spell something where the pieces remembered their last purposeful placement. So this had been his magic, Germander thought. He'd taken the rest of that day to consider what it meant to him and how it would affect his future inventions and from then on was more careful to not accidentally use magic.1882 | His letter-getting was celebrated and he spent a portion of his summer collecting school things with his nanny and youngest brother. By the time the school year rolled around, he was nearly quivering with excitement. Here would be a new environment with which to stretch his proverbial legs at; he knew his inventing would not stop merely because he was at school. Slytherin accepted him into their ranks though the hat nearly sorted him into Ravenclaw because of his cleverness with inventions. Unaware of the houses reputations and uncaring about them, he went with the flow. He plans to get patents for some of his inventions, but on the whole looks up to some of the great Unspeakables, the mystery alluring to him, and intends to find a way to become one of their ilk. For now, he's set himself some simple goals û like writing a book about ambitious inventing and creating neat objects to help him in his spelling.
1883 | He's almost finished with his first year of school and has found it as entertaining as he'd hoped. The library impressed him, especially since it's larger that his home's. Since starting school, he's found an interest in doodling, taking after da Vinci's penchant for drawing his works. Unlike the more sterilized styles of drawing, his has a characteristic macabre taste to it, following along the lines of not-yet-born Edward Gorey's style. His class notes are drawn over with these pictures and he finds it easier to remember details with the aid of his doodling.
Personality:
Germ tends not to get too attached to people, if anyone stopped to think why, they would only have to look as far as his household. While his father was extremely loving and supportive, his mother was nearly the opposite. He feels, even to this day, like his mother found him to be the "great disappointment." It was nothing she said, just a look. Later on he'd get the idea that she likely wanted a girl rather than another boy. He doesn't know just how on mark he is about his speculation, but he keeps his thoughts of his mother and father to himself. Another reason was that his brothers were never overly affectionate or friendly, an odd things given their age parity. The twins were contained to themselves, preferring not to deal with him. Yarrow and he just didn't mesh, having too different of personalities to feel a kinship with each other. Last reason was perhaps that every pet his family had would disappear. Nobody could say why, but after having lost his pets numerous times, he gave up trying to garner any feelings for the living things which were obviously too short-lived and too much of a hardship to try to create any real bond.Taking after his family and the culture of an intellectual, he's extremely precocious. He didn't have one, but a series of tutors. The struggle was never in getting him to understand a theory or an application, in fact, his natural ability to apply anything from textbook to life is laudable. The struggle was in getting him to do the work. He thinks that essays, papers, and other redundant homework is a waste of his time. While opinion and critical analysis pieces are interesting to write about, he thinks history essays are stupid. Speeches about historical matter less so, but he needs to practice his public speaking skills to have any sort of proficiency there. That said he loves practical applications and especially stretching his creativity in class.
These two key personality quirks, a handicap for attachment and his creative brilliance is likely what led him to his macabre sense of style and humor. He retains a dark sense of humor and is extremely dry in any telling of a joke. Because of this, it's difficult whether a remark from him is sincere or a joke. The telling is in his brief facial expressions, his eyes which do give away, but rarely do people seem to take notice of him here, or his lips, but their curve is often mistaken for a hard, cruel humor rather than anything so funny. So he's considered socially awkward, but doesn't go out of his way to be. He's honestly just being himself. Hopefully others will understand.
