Ever since Gertie had ceased to be the large, scaly, fire-breathing monster he had come to know and love, he had had a great deal of time to himself. He'd have to get a new charge eventually but it wasn't as though there Hebridean Blacks left, right and center to be taken into his care. Something would turn up eventually.

For now, Gusgus was killing some time in Hogsmeade, browsing various shops including Dervish and Banges. He liked this one, it was full of interesting little curiosities that he could spend hours staring at. He probably would have spent a great deal of time browsing too, if it weren't for the woman he saw. His eyes lit up as she walked in. She was beautiful, she was ethereal, she was- his mouth was agape, he thankfully realized and hastily slammed it shut. Ack! He was staring, staring was rude but... how could he not?

• The maid, of course, was fired. That meant, of course, that Threnody had to take the mirror to Dervish and Banges herself.
  
  It had been a gift from her husband: a handheld mirror charmed to advise on fashion and generally complement the carrier. For one as vain as the veela, it was an ideal Christmas present—until her foolish maid had dropped it! While Edward had been able to see to the physical damage, the magical reparations had required a skillset the quidditch captain did not possess, and so it was a brisk walk that carried Threnody to the shop.
  
  Strolling into the shop as if she owned it, a few short words with the man at the counter ensured he knew what was needed (her unnatural charm ensured that he would see to it quickly). She turned to leave, but was treated to the sight of someone staring at her. To most women, this would have seemed all but creepy, but Threnody was neither most women, nor entirely a normal woman at all. It was really par for the course, but he was handsome enough that she would give him the benefit of at least a brief flirtation.
  
  “Do I know you, Sir?” she inquired lightly, having approached him. Her smile was inquisitive, but her eyes predatory.

Oh Merlin, she was approaching him! Gus had half a mind to run for he surely couldn't do anything but embarrass himself in front of such a goddess. Sadly, his legs had turned to jelly and so he remained rooted to the spot to feel increasingly anxious until the woman finally spoke and his legs nearly gave way.

"Ah d-don't believe so, m'lady," he blurted out, far too fixated with drowning in her beauty to notice his choice of words or his stammering. "Ah don't mean tae stare, but ye must be aware of how beautiful ye are, ye are incomparable tae any woman Ah have ever laid eyes on before..." Now he was getting carried away with himself but he was so ensconced he forgot to be embarrassed. She was far too beautiful to be real, how was she real? Had he died and gone to heaven? Heaven looked suspiciously like Dervish and Banges but he didn't really care.

• Threnody thought she mightn’t even need the mirror if she could bring this fellow home with her. There was a roughness to him with which the veela was entirely unaccustomed, and she had quickly decided that she liked it. It was very manly, in a rugged sense—Edward, in contrast, was manly in an athletic sense. He was vaguely reminiscent of the woodsmen that had occasionally spirited away some of her sisters in her youth. It would have been almost threatening, if he weren’t so plainly smitten.
  
  “Then you have not met a real woman, Sir, for anyone worth the title should be as elegant as I am,” she purred, quite happy to insult the humans of the world. How any man could bind himself for life to something so inferior when such creatures as she roamed the earth was baffling. With a seductive smile she tucked a wayward strand of hair behind her ear, that he might get a better look at her.

Oh she was right, he had never met a woman like her before, none could compare! A true woman must look as radiant as she! She tucked some hair away and Gus was sure he would melt into a happy little puddle. She couldn't be a mere woman, she was a goddess.

"Yer right. Ah hae never met a real woman 'til now. Ye are a goddess compared tae other women!" He was so overwhelmed by her beauty that he felt a little drunk. "Say ye havnae got a lover already! Ah would do anything for ye. Anything at all!" She had to see how ardently he longed for her, had to see that and want him too! Oh if only she could want him, he who was but a mere dragon keeper!

• He was falling quickly—the veela liked that. As if by accident, she took half a step towards him, hoping that a nearer presence would intoxicate the Scot quicker still
  
  “I think,” Threnody started, shifting her features to a thoughtful expression, “that for me to commit to loving just one man would be very cruel indeed to all the others. I know there are many who would think ill of me for this, but I could not be so cruel as to deny everyone for one man’s fancy.”
  
  She stared up at him through long lashes. “I do hope you wouldn’t think ill of me for this.”

Gus felt his insides turn to mush as she came that little bit closer. He wasn’t accustomed to being so close to females and even less so to females who were so beautiful and made him want to act like his older brothers. Had this woman been ordinary, he might have disagreed with her remark that suggested promiscuity but he couldn’t possibly disagree with this goddess.

"Nae, nae I couldnae possibly think ill of ye," he replied, painfully aware of the heat he felt in his face as he replied.

• Threnody grinned. While she had doubted he would put up much of a fight on that score, she did so like to be appeased. In a rather motherly fashion, she played with the collar of his shirt; of course, it was just an excuse to get closer to him. “I could love you if you wished,” she offered, smiling up at him.

Her smile was blinding and the way she touched his collar made his stomach turn giddy somersaults. "Ah donae deserve the love of a goddess like ye," he sighed, a soppy and slightly disappointed look on his face. If only she could love him but how could she when she was so terribly beautiful and he... He was just Angus MacFusty. Girls only fell at the feet of his older brothers.

• That he did not deserve her was almost certainly true, but Threnody did not care for his reluctance regardless. “Would you disappoint me, sir?” she inquired almost sharply, though her face still wore a mask of warmth.

The prospect of disappointing such a glorious being was inconceivable to Gus. No, the look of even the mildest disappointment on her face would be a travesty! A beautiful travesty. "Never! Ah could nae ever disappoint ye!" He wasn't actually sure what it was he was potentially doing or not doing to disappoint her but whatever she wished of him, he would do it.

• Tentatively (or as tentatively as a self-sure veela could muster), Threnody extended a hand to the gentleman, tilting her head to the side as if in question.

Gus stared at the proffered hand for a moment, not quite sure what the significance of it was - surely she didn't want to do anything like that with him? But if she did... He reached out and closed his nervous hand around hers. Wherever she wanted to take him, he'd follow her gladly.
