"Are you always this forward?" He asked teasingly since it would be a very short thread if he just ignored her entirely. — Tobin Cartwright in Take A Peek
Did you know? Churchgoers and worshippers had to endure a foul stench during prayers due to the amount of bodies often stored within the vaults of churches and chapels.
Seventeen. It felt so strange for Ellory to know that if she wanted to, she could use her wand without worrying about The Trace. It wasn’t like she hadn’t occasionally used magic at home, where The Trace couldn’t really follow her, but in public she could now use her wand at will.
“Oh, I’ll do it!” Ellory said enthusiastically, when a waitress brought the tea and biscuits to their table. With a wave of her wand, the teapot started pouring tea to hers, Aunt Katherina’s and her betrothed’s cups. Her Aunt had been kind enough to agree in chaperoning Ellory during her meeting with her betrothed, as she had apparently met up with some friend at the same location earlier. Once they had finished with their tea, aunt and niece would both head to Ellory’s home and Edward, Ellory assumed, would go to her cousin Priam’s banquet at Black’s. Or, well, go home to prepare for the banquet.
Kath will remain an NPC figure in the background! You know, unless Edward suddenly decides he wants to steal Ellory and elope with her or something. xD
Edward could not help but smile slightly to himself, when he from a distance heard and saw Ellory use her wand in public. He had practically just entered Rosa Lee Teabag, and while it would be limited the time he had with her today, then he could understand that she also had other people to talk with today. And then of course there was the club dinner this evening at Black's. He had no good excuse to not come so he might as well go there.
"Miss Pendergast, Mrs. Selwyn." he greeted them with a small bow, "And congatulations on your important day Miss Pendergast." he said with a smile before he sat down and looked at Ellory. He was happy that she had written to him and asked if they could meet today.
Having her Aunt Katherina by her side seemed to have given her some strength, as Ellory didn’t blush or cast her eyes downwards as she would have usually had. She loved her Auntie Kath, but she had no doubt that she’d report every detail of this meeting to her mother and Ellory would rather not act like a fool.
“Why thank you, Mr. Macmillan,” Ellory replied with a perfectly polite tone. “It is quite nice not being a child anymore.”
Being able to cast magic wherever she wanted - well, except around muggles, of course - made Ellory feel a lot more grown up than she did only a day ago.
Turning seventeen was an important day for every witch and wizard, but it was rarely celebrated as such - simply because the majority of the people had their seventeenth birthday while in their sixth year at Hogwarts. Only those fortunate enough to be born in the summer months would celebrate their seventeenth birthday with family, and even then there was a high chance that the family would not do much about it, because it was also the season - and at the age of seventeen you were supposed to show the family and could be a part of the balls etc.
"I cannot speak on anybody else behalves, but to me, you have not been a child long, but instead a young lady." he said with a gentle smile and began to prepare his cup of tea to his liking.
“I am glad to know you think so!” Ellory commented with a smile. Her betrothed viewing her as a foolish child had been a worry of hers lately. She had never felt like she was a lady like Evelyn and Rosalind. Sure, she wasn’t an utter disappointment, but she she never felt like her mother approved of her as much as she did of them.
“I would hate for you to feel trapped like Cousin Elmer!” she then added. She had learnt of his betrothal to her cousin Priam’s stepdaughter. She had thought it rather extreme, but it was hardly the first betrothal with a huge age gap between the two involved.
Edward felt he could have been much more unlucky when it came to betrothals than Ellory. Being the first son and heir had its perks, like not having to be completely dependant, though he was exactly that, and as such wait much longer for the time to take a wife. While he did feel sorry for Elmer, then he could not help but be annoyed at his younger brother at the same time. In his eyes then he had been complaining far too much about somehting nothing could do anything about.
"Well, I do not. I understand my brother's surprise at the sudden betrothal - my father not even asking him about it, but his reaction were not one that any gentleman should have." he said with a small chuckle, remembering how Elmer had gone childish and called him Edwina. Brothers. he thought
“Some people do not take surprise well, I suppose,” Ellory commented with a sip from her tea. Little Laurentia being so much younger than her cousin was a factor as well. While such matches were hardly unusual, Ellory could understand how either party could feel irked out.
“What do you think of betrothals, cousin?” she then asked. Asking him ‘Would you betroth our children?’ probably wouldn’t be proper in front of Auntie Kath, but Ellory hoped that she’d get the information she wanted by his answer. She’d rather her children found their own husbands and wives, but if Edward wanted to betroth them she’d have little say in the matter.
"That might be the case, he is a lawyer and he might prefer to know where he stands without too many surprises. And maybe he had expected to stay unmarried for the rest of his life." he said with a small laugh. His brother was not the easiest person to get close to, he could sign on that but then at the same time he was not going to control what his brothers did.
"I am not sure, to be fair. Things change so often and some betrothals might turn out good, but some might also turn out less fortunate." he said calmly. It was not something he had thought more about at the current point.
“Many younger sons remain unmarried,” Ellory commented with a sip from her tea. She didn’t find the situation as funny as Edward seemed to. There was nothing illogical with cousin Elmer expecting and wanting to remain unmarried. With him being a third son, she imagined why he’d prefer his solitude. He’d likely not inherit as much as Edward and starting a family did involve some expense.
“Besides, cousin Laurentia is quite younger than him. I suppose cousin Elmer is just unsure on how the two could ever relate to anything together,” If she had been uncle John, she would have gone for someone a little bit older. Someone about to start their first year at Hogwarts, for example. Someone who wasn’t young enough to be cousin Elmer’s child.
Edward mostly laughed because he could not help but think of the letters Elmer had sent him complaining about the betrothal. "I suppose you are right. But then I have a feeling it was Priam that came to my father and asked if it was a possibility." he admitted. He took a sip of his tea while looking at Ellory.
Ellory doubted that cousin Priam had made uncle John agree to the match while pointing a wand to his neck, but she decided not to comment on it. It was not her business to worry or care on whether her cousin’s betrothal was right or not. She thought the arrangement weird, but she was neither uncle John nor cousin Priam.
“Well, parents know best!” she just said. Hopefully, Edward would know better. If he cared even a bit about her opinion, then they wouldn’t betroth their toddlers to middle aged men. “Besides, we two get along quite well, so I am sure the same will apply for cousin Elmer and cousin Laurentia in a few years.”
Of course, their match had been an arrangement between her father and his mother, rather than uncle John.
"So they say." he agreed with a smile. Personally he still found it slightly scary that his father could think of it. He could have left Elmer unbetrothed and then ushered him in a few years to get married. That was what Edward would have done, but he could not change his father's mind, and the arrangement was already made.
"We can always hope for them, I know I will." he said with a smile. Merlin knows that Elmer and Laurentia would need it when they would marry.
Ellory nodded. At least cousin Elmer wouldn’t be that terribly old when he married Laurentia. She knew of girls her age and younger that married men in their fifties and sixties and cousin Elmer would at least be in his thirties and many people did not look that old then.
At least her betrothed was not some old man with one foot in the grave and that was all that mattered.
