Merry had to admit that it indeed looked that way, especially for a boy who has no magical experience in his life. Magic had to do with waving your wand pronouncing a spell, but there was more behind it. It also mattered how much you try to make your spell work. It was difficult to explain, so Merry decided to use the patronus spell as an exaple. " You know what a patronus is? It is a spell which protects us from dementors, probably the nastiest creatures in this world. In order to make the spell work, you must think of something really happy. This pretty much applies for any type of spells. If you want something to happen, you make it happen." she explained to him.

His apologise made her eyes wide. She was not really annoyed by his quiestions, she actually enjoyed answring them. A Slytherin trait was showing off your knowlege, after all. " Don't worry." she assured him and then she answered his last question:" Age does not matter. You could take two twelve year olds but the one will be surely a little more talented than the other. I guess experience matters a lot. And of course, talent and if you enjoy learning... Like me and dark magic... I hate herbology so I was never especially good at it."

Oliver typically didn't think of anything when attempting spells besides doubt and wonderment that the spell even existed. Certainly never he had he concentrated on what the spell was supposed to do. As the wonderment of it all and the plaguing feelings of doubt usually pushed thoughts about what the spell would do out of his mind.

Maybe that was part of what he had been missing.

Oliver said " Never heard of a patronus. " leaving out the fact he had little clue what a dementor was. Now he hoped that they would never cover dementors in care of magical creatures, or herbology. As in this world there were some plants in this world scarier than some animals.

He said " I grew up on a farm when I was younger so herbology is about the only thing I am doing good in. If you need help I am pretty good at planting near anything. I even once got some plants to grow during the winter by putting warm rags on the ground that were heated from a fire. " It was odd hearing himself say he was good at something at Hogwarts. So he continued and said " I enjoy learning Hogwarts has been a great opportunity.

Why would she actually need help from a first year? Merry sometimes couldn't help but do things like these. Then again, the boy had been kind to her, so she didn't want to be harsh. Herbology wasn't Merry's favourite class and she concidered dropping it next year, but it wasn't difficult either. Some of the plants were actually interesting to work with. Merry always enjoyed Herbology during her first year, but as time passed, it became more and more boring.

" Thanks, I appreciate your help." she replied politely to the boy, giving him a small smile. Well, she could help him with his homework from time to time, right? " If you need help, search for Merrythought Galatea." she continued, sure that the boy wouldn't have trouble to find her. She was pretty popular due to her previous Quidditch career, so a lot of students knew her name.

It took him a few seconds for him to realize in this world there were plants that probably could kill him. Actually this world had a lot of oddness that resulted in dangerous risks. Hopefully Merry would not ask him for help on something dangerous, and maybe he would listen to the older years mentions of Herbology.

    Was he being dismissed? Probably.

Oliver said " I'm Oliver Detheridge and I should probably run along before the girls come back. Is it me or do the chaperons have them walk in circles or predictable patterns? " Though it probably would make things easier for him once he learned those patterns to better avoid them.

Merry smiled. " I guess they indeed go in circles. They don't actually have somewhere to go." she replied, nodding her head slightly. She didn't want to be caught by them as well. She was unchaperoned and, well, she was talking to a boy, although he was a lot younger than Merry.

" Goodbye, Oliver Detheridge." she saluted the boy, not bothering to call him 'Mr Detheridge'. She hated formalities, especially to someone who was a lot younger than her. People from the slums were not used to that kind of language. She turned around and started walking to the opposite direction of where the girls went and then she started running to Slytherin's Common Room.
