Eva had had a bad feeling since morning. Her and Rosaline Bennett's relationship had been awkward since Eva had caught her in a compromising position with her father, so Eva wasn't exactly seeking out opportunities to hang out with her. They did live in the same house, though and they'd both wanted to visit the World Market that day, so her father had suggested they go together.

It wasn't that bad at first. Eva was minding her own business and the Bennetts minded theirs until Rosaline's son came running to them shouting about some tiger. They had been chased by one, until the explosion happened and they got trapped in the ruins.

There was a slash across her forehead that caused Eva to hiss through her teeth in pain. "This can't be happening to me," Eva muttered in a frustrated tone more than anything. She was dabbing her wound with her handkerchief. Thankfully it wasn't serious. "I'm supposed to get married in December!"

Rose had been having a perfectly-pleasant-but-admittedly-awkward day until the incident. Now, she was armed and trapped and responsible for two children she cared about. And trapped in a cave-in really gave Eva a tremendous opportunity to make things awkward for Rose, after that whole sex thing. (While Eva was a legal adult, Rose actually considered anyone under twenty-five to be a child. Sorry, Eva.)

It especially did not help that Eva was injured, and talking about marriage. Rose was inspecting the rubble trapping them, wand in hand, but turned towards the debutante.

"You're going to get married in December," she said, determinedly, "Try pressing your kerchief to the wound - it'll stop the bleeding more swiftly."

Eva did as she was told. She trusted Mrs. Bennett's opinion about their situation. She'd been a professional duelist and she was a badass, even if she slept around with married men.

"I'm so annoyed!" Eva whined as she dabbed on her wound. "This is bad luck. I was jinxed! People just couldn't deal with how happy I was!" Yes, Eva was self-absorbed enough to think that this huge destruction was about her.

A low-pitched growl sounded from somewhere nearby, but Eva was too caught up in her rant to notice. "My Frederick must be so worried about me! Oh, it's not fair, it's not fair at all! We could have gotten married this summer and we didn't and now I won't live to marry him!"

The words Eva, there's people that are dying were on the tip of Rosaline's tongue when she head the growling. The matron whirled around and hissed, "Shh! Something's out there." at the debutante.

She waved a frantic hand at Archie, who moved to stand with Eva. Rose approached the source of the sound and peered through a crack in their rubble cave, only to find herself eye to eye with a feline. The growling resumed and Rose backed up.

Whatever the creature was, his growling increased in volume.

"Well shit," Rose snapped, adrenaline making her forget about the children.

Eva actually obeyed her father's lover and shut her mouth. Internally, she still went like 'Oh great, now we're all going to die and I won't get married in December!', though.

"What is it?" Eva hushedly asked. For Mrs. Bennett to resort to swearing, it had to be something serious. She was, after all, a school Matron by day, even if she slept with married men at night.

Eva's question was answered by the sudden and violent removal of the rubble that'd ben standing between the tiger and her group. With a wave of its paw, the creature had sent it flying away.

Eva let out a scream, but the next thing she did was draw her wand out and send a hex the creature's way.

    Oh, this was bullshit.

Rubble struck Rosaline's middle as the tiger sent the wall near her collapsing. It was just a chunk of ceiling, and she stayed standing.

Eva's hex made Rose thank Merlin that Nik had been blessed with useful daughters. She could not glance behind her to see what Archie was doing, but as he was only an outgoing third year, Rose was not surprised to see a piece of ceiling struck the tiger's nose. Her son was throwing things.

Rather inspired, Rose yelled, "Redactae oppugno!" to send the rubble flying at the tiger.

Rosaline's spell, combined a stunner from Eva, seemed to have demobilized the tiger that had been attacking them. Eva allowed herself a sigh of relief, though she didn't put her wand down. One couldn't be too relaxed around those beasts.

For the time being, however, they seemed to be safe from that threat. They were still trapped in the rubble.

"Any ideas on how to get out?" Eva inquired, eyeing their surroundings.

Despite the tiger's break-in, they were still decidedly stuck. Rose frowned at the immobile beast, and then looked at Miss Sleptova and her son. If she wasn't responsible for them, she probably could have gotten out on her own - but she couldn't leave them. And escaping was risky.

"We definitely can't apparate," Rose said, having ruled out that course of action already, "Not without serious risk of splinching. And with those things out there, we'll have to travel slowly."

Eva wasn't good at apparating on a good day. She'd barely gotten her license and she preferred to use the Floo Network if she had to go anywhere. Thankfully, her friends' houses were all hooked to the network and so was the Leaky Cauldron, if Eva had to visit Diagon Alley for whatever reason. Oh, her two chaperones were both better at it than she was, so that was good too.

With a nod of acknowledgment, Eva asked: "Do you remember where the nearest exit was?" With all that had happened, their surroundings didn't resemble what the Market had been at all.

It was Mrs. Bennett's son that gave them the answer. It was hesitant, but he thought the answer was on their left.

"We can try to clean this up?" She gestured to a wall of rubble.

"Let's try to make it there," Rose agreed. She turned her attention to the rubble and began, with deliberate and quick wand movements, to move the rubble out of the way. She hoped this wouldn't compromise the security of their structure - and stopped as the walls surrounding them gave a groan.

"The more we move, the more unstable it becomes," Rose said.

    Damn it!

"So we wait, then?" Eva asked irritably. Someone would surely come to their rescue. The question was when and whether she and the Bennetts would be alive for that.

"We can at least surround ourselves with some kind of shield bubble so we don't have to worry about the tigers or any debirs falling on our heads."

"We'll have to. Damn it," Rose said. She was not often one to curse, but it also wasn't often that she ended up in disasters with a debutante and her son. Damn it.

Her mouth twisted in frustration. There was nothing she could do, but that didn't make it any less upsetting - and she couldn't display any sort of frustration or fear among these children.

"The shield will be stronger if we cast together," Rose said, pointing her wand above her and waiting. Shield charms were above Archie's level, unfortunately.

Eva didn't want to wait. She wanted to be home already, where she could enjoy a long bath and then sleep and forget about this horrible experience. At the same time, sitting and waiting sounded safer than daring their way out, with the tigers and unstable debris and all.

"Yes," she agreed at the suggestion of casting the shield together. "We can cast [incantation]. I can take one side and you the other. On three?"

On three, they cast; the shield spread out above them like a secure little bubble. Rose sighed.

Merlin only knew how long they'd be stuck here.
