    swimming through the morning after
    we float away

There was a thought nagging at a corner of her mind for the past several days, a too-late thought, a dangerous thought - she denied it for nearly a week until she woke up vomiting, and remembered a much younger version of herself. The version of her who was very newly married, very newly American - and very newly pregnant.

She waited for Nik in a corner of his office, sat in a chair since the very, very early morning. Her hair was ruffled, she was still in her sleep-clothes, and the sky had not yet started to turn into the gray of the Scottish winter late-morning. Finally Nikolai opened the door and she looked up at him, dark shadows under her eyes.

    "We have a problem."
