It shouldn't have happened. Her father wasn't supposed to be dead. Not on the second day of the new year. Not now. It wasn't fair. It couldn't be her father. Mr. Archie Skeeter had to be lying; the body that was found couldn't be her father's.
The silence in the Dudley home only indicated what Innogen wanted so badly not to believe. Her mother wasn't as lively or happy as usual and she didn't tell her that a mistake had happened. If it was a mistake her mother would be the first to know, right? If it was indeed a mistake her mother would have told her. Or she would have at least told Lucian or Eric and then they would tell her what had really happened. It was true, and Innogen was no fool to try and hide behind hopeless fantasies, but she didn't want to believe that her father was dead either.
Idony also didn't seem to want to believe, because she was crying and in a particularly loud way. Her sister at least had her governess, though. Who did Innogen have right now? She had her mother, but she was probably busy and miserable enough, trying to figure out what to do now that her husband was dead. Innogen didn't want to bother her mother with her own problems right now; it wouldn't be the right thing to do.
Genna was locked in her bedroom, in an attempt to block away the general sadness of the house. Right now there was silence, but the rest of the house was still too cold and and Genna couldn't stand it. She sighed when she heard a cry come from a nearby room; it surely belonged to Idony. Not wanting to listen to her sister again, Genna quickly opened her wardrobe's door and crawled inside.
It was peaceful in there. Somehow quiet. It was only dark, but Innogen quickly managed to bring some light using her wand. Students weren't supposed to cast magic outside the school, but she was in a house full of adult wizards so nothing bad would happen. Besides, Innogen didn't feel like obeying to the rules right now. Sighing, she softly pulled her locket from her neck and looked at it. This beautiful little trinket was her father's last Christmas present and right now it felt like Innogen's most valuable possession in the girl's heart.
She opened it, but it was empty. That fact was enough to make a tear stroll down the girl's cheeck as the whole reality of her father's death hit her again. The locket was empty just like the house was, now that her father was not alive anymore.
It wasn't fair. It shouldn't have happened that way.
