    Fugly Mountain Troll

It was bound for unkind rumours to be spread when she made the Cannons’ junior league team. The Chudley Cannons’, the team her father sponsored. Part of Cecily didn’t care at all about how that might seem. Haters would hate even if she ended up the Chudley Cannons’ worst enemy’s seeker. But she also wanted to do well, so people would gossip only out of spite and not because their words were actually true.

She had been rearranging her hair in one of the girls’ bathrooms, when she overheard two girls talking from the opposite end of the room. Their voices were too quiet for her to understand everything they said, but she did catch her name and something along the lines of ‘mountain trolled faced’.

Raising an eyebrow, she looked at her reflection in the mirror.

Open to 2+ others. Girls only, obviously. xD

    wait for it...

Gemma was and would always be an outspoken person. She hardly ever had to speak up for herself, but was unafraid to do so. She was also not at all intimidated by others, especially mean-spirited girls with nothing better to do with their time than pick on others.

She'd made a quick stop in the bathroom to tend to her deteriorating hairstyle (it was usually a casual mess by the end of the day), trying to get the pins back in there and at least keep it out of her face. A young blonde walked in and Gem passed her a smile, she didn't know the girl's name, but had seen her before. She couldn't place where until she heard some gossip mongers down the bathroom chatting in poor taste.

Gallivan- she was the daughter of the gentleman who'd run the Junior League tryouts.

"Excuse you?" Gemma called down the way, wondering just how badly she could startle these girls into holding their tongues.

Despite having scarcely spoken to Miss Gemma Simpson before, Cee couldn’t be more glad for her presence. Her speaking up made the Ravenclaw blush a bit, but then she also turned to look at the girls.

Thankfully, they didn’t say anything. They only gave both her and the Gryffindor a disgruntled look and then walked out of the bathroom. They’d probably stay all sorts of nasty things about them once they were out of their earshot. But Cee didn’t really care.

“That was very kind of you, Miss Simpson,” Cee said with a smile. It was rare when people showed kindness like that. “I was expecting that people would talk, but I thought that they’d be tactful enough not to do it in front of my face!”

Watching with satisfaction as the girls chose not to say anything further, Gem scowled after them even after they'd left. Certainly they were just jealous. Turning first to pass a smile to Miss Gallivan, Gemma shrugged a little bit and tried to resume fixing her hair.

"The nerve of some people." She shook her head and rolled her eyes a little bit. Honestly, people needed to mind their own business. If it was one thing Gemma couldn't stand, it was bullies and gossips! She knew for a fact several people had choice words to say about her and all of her friends who happened to be boys, but she chose to ignore them and not let it bother her.

Unable to remember if those girls had been at tryouts, Gemma wondered if they were just sour over something entirely unrelated. "I wouldn't worry about them. We'll be the ones who get to have the fun of playing this summer." She was so excited about it she could hardly wait!

Cecily smiled. She was incredibly excited about the games that summer. She was determined to do her best during practices, so she’d be able to prove her worth by then. Just because her father sponsored the team that got her didn’t mean that she was completely useless!

“Which team did you make?” Cecily asked Gemma. She hadn’t paid much attention to the rosters, save for the fact that she and Theodore would be playing for the same team, but she and Laura wouldn’t. “I made the Cannons, which is part of the reason why people make such comments.”

"United!" Gemma had wished she could have played for the Arrows, for sentimental reasons; or the Harpies, because playing on an all-girl team would have been the best. But she knew she was not the best- hadn't even made seeker, but that was okay! Everybody had been working with her, Lance, Oliver, even August long-distance! She'd be better by the time the season started, that was for sure! She was working on her flying skills and everything.

If Gem was a normal person who paid attention to things like whose dad was associated with which team, she would have realized that Cecily's father was involved with the Cannons, but she was a complete flake in that respect. "I think it's going to be incredibly fun, no matter which team you play for!"

"I just need to work on my catching skills." She joked, finally reigning in her pins and loose locks, at least for now.

Miss Simpson was right. They wouldn’t really get paid for this either, so they wouldn’t need to worry to do well. At least not in that sense. Cecily didn’t want to fail miserably in every match she played in. That would surely disappoint her father, and he’d probably end up regretting letting her play for the Cannons.

“Me too,” Cecily commented. “But I suspect it might not be the same kind of catching! Did you get seeker?”

Gemma gave a quick, abashed little shrug. She wasn't embarrassed per say, but she would have much rather played seeker and it was obviously her lack of experience that prevented her from doing so. "No, chaser, but I just need to practice some more then I won't be so bad." This time she grinned playfully. It wasn't really a secret that she could use all of the practice she could get, so her appointment as chaser was also, not a surprise.

"Will you be playing seeker?" Gems assumed yes, but it was still polite to ask!

Cecily was sure that Miss Simpson wasn’t so bad. She was probably no Art Pettigrew, but in fairness, none of them were. This was their opportunity to practice and become better. While playing with other inexperienced players. Well, save for those who played Quidditch at school, like Theo.

“Yes,” she replied with a nod. “I don’t think my father would have let me play in any other position, other than chaser, of course. Well, certainly not beater. Not that I’d make a good one, even if he did let me!”

Gem chuckled. Beater had always been something she thought she'd enjoy, but she was pretty sure she'd never told anybody that. Maybe August, since that was what he played, but she'd rather her father not revoke her quidditch-playing privileges. That would be horrible; Gemma was rather fond of them now that she had them!

"I always thought beater would be kind of fun." She admitted with a sly smile. "When else would it be acceptable to just all out hit things?" Okay well, most young ladies hardly envisioned hitting things, but Cecily was a quidditch girl, hopefully she wouldn't take that the wrong way. Gem had always just kind of figured that it would be fun, if a bit tough, especially for somebody her size.

Cecily let out a small laugh. “It’s probably great for unwinding!” Probably that was why beaters had the reputation of being hot-tempered. It made them better at their job.

“And I should get going to class!” she suddenly said.
