Getting Festive

With Christmas only a few days away, the Virgot's had decided that it was high time to decorate for the holiday. Effie wasn't coming home to join them, which was just fine by Davy. She tended to make things a little awkward between he and Evie. Mostly with questions about why they weren't married, when they would announce a pregnancy, topics that Davy liked to avoid at all costs.

"I haven't got your present just yet," He was telling the love of his life as he straightened the tree that he'd drug into the living area moments before, "But I think I know what I want to get you." There was a little perfume bottle that he's spotted at the general store that he thought Evie would like. Perfume was a luxury for people in their station, but he wanted to spoil her as much as he could. It would cost some money out of the savings he'd been building for their wedding. The look on her face when she saw it would be worth it.

"Oh?" Evie asked, her curiosity piqued, as she set the small box of decorations on the floor near the tree. Personally, Evie rather hoped that he'd finally saved enough to afford their wedding bands. She couldn't think of a single gift that would possibly give her more joy than finally being Davy's wife.

She had, of course, already wrapped his gift and hidden it among her things: a new scarf and pair of gloves she'd knit from the softest wool yarn she had been able to find at the general store.

"Give me a hint," she demanded playfully, grinning up at her best friend.

Evie had such an endearing smile - he couldn't help but to return her grin, "If I give you a hint, you'll guess it! What kind of a surprise will it be then?" Convinced that the tree was sturdy, he released it and attempted to wipe the pine sap off of his hands and onto his shirt. It was much stickier than he'd realized.

"Though," He continued in feigned thoughtfulness, "I may be willing to answer three 'yes or no' questions. If you guess it, I'll tell you what it is. If not - you'll just have to wait until Christmas..." He glanced down to see her reaction before he bent down to shuffle through the box of decorations she'd brought in.

Evie pouted at his refusal, but that soon abated as her thoughts turned to what questions she could ask. They would have to be good ones, if she really wanted to find out what he had in mind -- though that would ruin the surprise somewhat, if she did guess correctly. What if he had a whole romantic evening planned where he got down on one knee and everything? Oh, she certainly didn't want to ruin that!

She bent to retrieve a decoration of her own from the box, making sure to position her arms just so they perked up what bust she had most flatteringly. Her high-cut gingham dress, of course, did almost too good a job at covering what form she could claim, but Evie figured it couldn't hurt.

"Is it jewelry?" she asked, biting her lip both in childlike excitement and a halfhearted attempt to look alluring.

"Not jewelry," He glanced cheerfully over at her and then suddenly grew concerned. Why was she standing like that? It looked... awkward. He didn't know whether she had purposely positioned herself in such a way to make her breasts stand out a tad more, or if it was happen stance. Surely it was just a coincidence. Something must have been wrong.

"Are you feeling well, my love? Does your stomach pain you?" Having lived with women all his life he was aware that sometimes women's courses pained them. He hoped that wasn't the case since it was rather intimate for them since they weren't married yet, but if she needed him to care for her, he would. He'd likely be as uncomfortable as ever doing it, but do it he would.
