    FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 13, 1885

Upon receiving a response in letter form from his youngest (and most distant) sister after requesting that they all be in the same house at once this coming Sunday, he hadn't even responded. He'd gone in late Friday afternoon, long after classes for the roses had been done for the day, and requested to see his little sister. The worst thing that could happen was for him to run into the little Miss Pendergast.

After having signed in with one of the staff members, he was escorted into one of the parlor rooms to see his sister. Luckily, he managed not to run into anyone besides staff members on the way to the room his sister was situated in. "Anais," he said cautiously, trying to get a look at the expression on her face before she met his eyes. "I think we need to talk," he sighed.

Since his wife and daughter's death on July 17, 1887, Mathias has not left the home and refuses to take visitors. Letters can be sent to him for contact, but there's no guaranteeing he'll write back. He's not eating or sleeping regularly and refuses to leave his son's presence most of the day.

Well, here it was. After hearing the news from Miss Ellory, Anais had been embarrassed, that much was true; but that had faded rather quickly into vaguely amused apathy. She did not make a habit of paying much attention to Mathias's personal life, and she was content to keep it that way for as long as she could get away with it.

"Well, here I am," she replied nonchalantly.

He could understand that she was upset with him. He'd taken her out of school and away from her friends and family in order to assure that she become the properly lady. Was it the right decision short-term? Yes. Was it best for the long run? He wasn't so sure about that.

Sighing, he sat down next to his sister that obviously didn't care for him much anymore and tried to get her to meet his eyes. "I don't want to think I was hiding anything from you. You know I can only sign you out on Sundays. I didn't think the little Miss Pendergast would go around telling everyone of the engagement," he said, a slight tone of distaste in his voice. He sure hoped she'd only told his sister.

Anais resisted the urge to roll her eyes, determined to keep her expression neutral as she met Mathias's gaze. It had been more than a year since their argument, but it was still painfully clear in her memory. She could not afford to make him angry again, as frustrating as he was.

"I don't think mentioning it to one's future sister-in-law counts as everyone, Mathias. She thought I already knew." A reasonable assumption for most families, probably. "You could have at least mentioned something when you wrote. Does Mother even know yet?"

"I understand that it upsets you, Anais, but I would have been just as in trouble if I would have told you last. I don't like to say important things such as an engagement through letters," he explained, attempting to remain calm, cool, and collected while his sister gave him what he perceived as an attitude. "Mother isn't aware that we are currently engaged, but she was aware of my interest and intent to. I questioned her about a ring a few weeks ago."

Oh, for Merlin's sake. Did he really believe she would be upset over being told last? And perhaps he thought Mother didn't know yet, but if Miss Ellory already knew then Mrs. Pendergast certainly did, and surely it was only a matter of time before it came up in conversation!

But obviously none of that mattered to him.

"It's just embarrassing to have to hear it from someone outside the family first," she replied, averting her eyes from Mathias's. "I'm sure Mother would agree. I would have rather heard last than not at all."

Ugh. Mathias could understand her frustration, but it wasn't as if he lived two blocks away from the Beaumont family home! He was all the way down in Wales of all places, and it wasn't as if he could drop all of his plans to go see his family the day after getting engaged! He actually did have a life away from Hogsmeade.

"I'm sorry I couldn't drop everything I was doing on the day—and the day after—I got engaged to tell everyone the news. Have you forgotten that I don't live in Hogsmeade? I live in Wales, Anais. Wales. Should I now assume that everyone in town is aware of our engagement?"

He probably should. Perhaps he should tell Rosalind not to speak of their private business to her family before he could prepare to tell his family.

    Goodness, such dramatics.

"It's not as though she wrote the Prophet," she sighed. "I think it's perfectly natural to want to talk to one's future in-laws about it. I know you're a busy man," she continued, trying to placate him at least a little so that she might get out of this tedious conversation sooner, "but even if you had just said you were planning to propose it would have been better."
