    Elliot,

[Pleasantries about daily life etc. here]

I confess that it is rather a relief to write to you about ordinary troubles, however embarrassed I might feel. You see, I received last week flowers from a gentleman with whom I am acquainted—no, I shall not leave you his name!—and, while unsolicited, I will admit that they were not unwelcome. When I wrote to thank him, however, he replied that he had not sent them at all, in spite of the fact that it was his name the card attached bore!

Of course, he was not unkind about it, and I have returned the card to him in the hopes that he will not think me truly dotty, but I am dreadfully embarrassed and do not know at all how to proceed otherwise. I do not dare tell Mother for she has never seemed overly pleased by the fact that I am a young woman with all that goes with it, in spite of the fact that neither of us have any say in the matter.

    With love,

    Virginia

    [pleasantries etc]

Your situation strikes me as familiar - I was recently scolded by a young lady (no names for you, either!) for sending her flowers, despite having never done such a thing. I don't suppose that someone could be playing a trick on the two of us? It's not the most inventive trick in the world, but there you have it.

I've refrained from telling mother because I am afraid that she will think me mad. You're right, though - I suspect that our parents are a tad bit overprotective of you. (I am very curious about your not-unwelcome-gentleman!)
    Much love,
    Elliot

    Elliot,

That certainly is a comfort, however small, though perhaps a small blow, too, to my pride! I think this knowledge will come as a comfort to the gentleman in question—that he was not the lone sender of these mystery bouquets—though I do wish we might know who was behind it so that they might be dealt with appropriately.

I must remind you to be careful, my dear brother, for I do not have an occupation to fill my days in you do. This leaves me with a great deal of time for solving mysteries, such as the identity of your mystery young lady. I will point out that I would never have thought anything amiss had you not steadfastly refused to confess, and so I shall make it my mission to puzzle out just who it is you’re hiding from me!

Do remember, Elliot, that for a young woman, flowers are never unwelcome. I merely declined to give you his name for I do not wish to embarrass him further.

    With love,

    Virginia

I do not doubt your ability to discern her identity if you truly want to look into it, and urge you to let me know if you do have any guesses. You underestimate how amusing I find these things, Ginny. I do hope that you'll let me know the identity of your gentleman, if only so that I may try to find out how this happened.

I'll be home in a few weeks, anyways - we can discuss our lack of romantic lives then, for all that it's worth.
    Much love,
    Elliot
