"I try, my darling," Viola responded to her sister with a warm smile, immensely touched by her words. Viola had always attempted to ensure that, in the absence of their mother, she could be the female role model that her siblings could look to for guidance in times or emotional turmoil and trouble, and she was satisfied that she seemed meeting her goal, though perhaps with Mathilda more so than with Hector -- due to differences in sex and relationship, there was not very much Viola could do for her younger brother except to be present whenever he was in need of her.
"Very well," Viola said, drinking the remains of her tea before placing her napkin upon her plate, indicating that she was finished taking her tea. "Do return to your studies, my dear -- persistence and determination are good virtues to possess, and will get you far in life." And Viola watched as her sister exited the Sun Room door before leaning back in her chair, a thoughtful expression forming on her face.
Would this year finally prove be different?
