Also notable is Barrett’s cousin, Baxter Keene. #fuckyeahkeenes.
Appearance: Barrett is 5’9” and right handed. He has dark hair and brown eyes, and generally very expressive eyebrows - actually, he’s pretty expressive in general. He has a mildly awkward way of carrying himself, and talks in an emphatic tone. Typically wears browns.
History: 1846: Barrett is born, the second (and last!) child of Benjamin and Mary Keene. His brother takes to him to some extent, but letting four year olds interact with infants is ill-advised, so their parents tend to keep them as separated as possible.
1850: Barrett demonstrates magic when he almost falls out of a tree but lands on the floor of his parent’s library instead.
1853: Christopher goes to school, where he is sorted into Gryffindor.
1857: Barrett is ridiculously frustrated about being born in November when September rolls around and he cannot go to Hogwarts.
1858: Finally! The sorting hat debates between Gryffindor and Ravenclaw but Barrett’s sense of bravado wins out; as does, of course, his determination to share a house with his always-impressive older brother. Of course, fifth years do not especially want to hang with first years, so of course Barrett makes his own friends and is sort of social even if awkward.
1860: Chris graduates and enters auror training. Barrett selects Ghoul Studies and COMC as his electives, and finds himself extremely interested in the former - it’s so interesting to go bother ghosts!
1863: Barrett takes his OWLs and gets mostly awesome results. He continues with Ghoul Studies, Transfiguration, Herbology, and History of Magic.
1865: Barrett settles into becoming an academic and - after spending six months living at home and researching his neighbor’s homes while his parents side-eye each other and quietly judge him - publishes a book on household ghouls in Godric’s Hollow.
1866: Barrett takes off to Louisiana for a year to study zombies. Yes, actually. His adventures at home are limited to a week there when Christopher gets married.
1867: Barrett publishes a book on his adventures in Louisiana to general acclaim, and receives a commission to study the oldest ghosts in the world. To the cradle of civilization (South Africa) he gooooes, and though he almost falls off the plateau once because he got startled by a small dragon, it’s totally worth it. He publishes a book on his studies when he comes home. Christopher’s wife produces a nephew, Darby. Barrett secretly judges this naming choice.
1868: Harassing ghosts who experienced Alexander of Macedon? Fuck yes. Barrett spends several months following Alexander the Great’s trail of conquering.
1869: Naturally, a book is published. Nora Keene gives birth to Quentin.
1871: Vampires are not his usual fare, but Barrett takes the opportunity to study them anyways. He almost dies a couple times, but doesn’t die or get bit, so you know, s’all good.
1872: The In-Depth Guide to Vampirism, Barrett’s fifth book, is published. Nora produces Zona Keene.
1873: Barrett gets the rare opportunity to study inferi in Scotland that the Ministry is putting down in a week, and naturally jumps at it. And then publishes a book because of fucking course he does.
1874: Chris dies doing auror shit. Though Nora is given custody of her children, Barrett is set up as the controller of their finances, and takes on a more involved role in his niece and nephews’ life. This inspired him to apply for - and receive! - the position of Ghoul Studies professor, thinking that he ought to be more responsible with his safety than his brother was for the sake of the kids. (And sure, he sees them less often because he’s at Hogwarts, but the weekend off is usually enough and Nora has things under control.)
1878: Darby goes to school, where he is sorted into Slytherin. It occurs to Barrett that he might be a bit in love with his brother’s widow. #classy He throws himself into work quite a bit.
1880: Quentin goes to school and is sorted into [Gryffindor or Slytherin]! That fall, Barrett’s nephew begins taking his class at the OWL level.
1883: Zona goes to school and is sorted into some house.
1884: Barrett becomes Gryffindor Head of House.
Personality: Brave and clever but a bit reckless, Barrett has sort of settled into responsibility now that he’s older but is still prone to adventuring. The Baxter of Hogwarts, he could quite happily go months without leaving the school and is frequently unsure of what to do with himself outside of it, now that his niece and nephews are fairly self-sufficient. Liiiiittle bit socially awkward.
