The Mercy Seat is Waiting
And the mercy seat is melting
And I think my blood is boiling
And in a way I'm spoiling
All the fun
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of proof.
A life for a life
And a truth for a truth
And anyway there was no proof
But I'm not afraid to hear a lie.
And the mercy seat is waiting
And I think my head is burning
And in a way I'm yearning
To be done with all this measuring of truth.
An eye for an eye
And a truth for a truth
And anyway I told the truth
But I'm afraid you told a lie.
Time Stamp: Sunday December 18th, 1881. Late Afternoon
The bitter wind swept the blond's hair off her shoulders behind her. Snow had been falling for the past few hours and Hog's Head had quickly become deserted. She double checked the heavy dead bolt and walked towards the dreary slums. The blinding snow reminded her of the winters she spent as a young girl running around with her older sister. Jetta and Tessa had never truly been 'close, Tessa was her sister though and wasn't family supposed to come first? Jetta hadn't seen Tessa more than five times since they both arrived in Hogsmeade in the early years. Tessa ran a less than respectable business, and Jetta, despite what she may tell you regarding the matter, was disgusted with her sister's line of work.
She was ankle deep in snow by the time she reached the line where the slums began. "Who knew so much snow could fall in such little time?" Jetta muttered out loud to no one. There was no one around, at least she couldn't see anyone near by, but the snow was blinding. It was blinding to the point where she couldn't see anything further than two feet in front of her, possibly even less than that.
Keeping her head down and her hood drawn over her long blond locks, it would have been impossible to see the figure before her before they were both sent sprawling to the ground.

Tessa cursed irritably under her breath. At the first sign of snow she had departed from the brothel to get some last minute supplies that would tie them over long hopefully in case it snowed in for a while or some customers found themselves stuck in the brothel. She had enough for a week or two a most. Bundling the goods she had purchased on the High Street that day under her cloak better, she hurried off towards the Slums, horrified by the sight of the crowding. She ran an important business, she couldn't afford to be away from it for much longer. Well, in all honesty she could but she wasn't going to admit to that.
She stood scowling murderously at the back of the people cued in front of her, wanting very much to simply push through them and be back at the Maison without having to get frostbite first by standing around outside. Next thing she knew, however, was she was sent falling to the ground, her parcels and the couple of oddly shaped vials of potion sent flying. For the first time that day, she was thankful for the snow which was adequate cushion enough to protect her goods from shattering or from her sustaining any bruises. Nonetheless, she wasn't happy. Quickly leaning on her hands and knees to scoop her things up again, stashing them back under her robes before turning around to see who had caused her to drop them in first place. "You should watch where-" She had began scolding the person before having seen who it was, stopping when she looked and recognized the blonde haired woman to be her very own sister. "Oh..." She had been about to get to her feet again but was rather more surprised to see her sister and stopped, simply sitting in the snow with a strange look on her face as if to say 'how inconveniently awkward'.

Her ability to speak had been severed in less than three seconds. For the first time in what seemed like years (possibly has been, Jetta didn't often pay attention to the date - only the change in seasons) she was seeing her sister. The same one her thoughts had been lingering on a few moments ago. "Tessa?" She questioned as if the person was going to shape shift into someone else and tell her she was seeing things.
She wasn't quite sure what to say. Her immediate reaction was to ask how Tessa was doing, but that didn't seem like the greatest idea seeing her sister's line of work was rather ... disgusting. At least Jetta had the satisfaction of seeing that the years had aged her sister some, however minimally. Being the younger sibling in a family was sometimes beneficial.
"I'm sorry for that." She muttered and eyed the bottles lying on the ground. In all truths, Jetta could've gone another three or four years without seeing her sister and she would've been happy about it. "Horrible weather out here, no?"

Tessa scowled; she could apologize half-heartedly all she wanted, the bottles weren't going to pick themselves up! On the other hand, Tessa was of course a witch and so picking up the dropped bottles would be cinch, though she sadly only thought about that afterwards. Sighing exasperatedly, she slowly got to her feet and dusted the snow off her dress as best she could which wasn't well at all seeing as her arms were full once again.
Talking about the weather? Tessa scoffed at her, not accustomed to such... small talk. Yes, she was well acquainted with small talk but not with quite so earnestly or awkwardly as the case may have been. "I have certainly seen better," she commented, letting little but disdain fill her voice. It felt awkward and strained to her as seeing her younger sister always had. "You are... keeping well?" she asked stiffly, not making eye contact, instead frowning at a random point on the snowy ground.
"Have you seen Ludolf of late?" Tessa hadn't seen her brother since leaving the family home and had heard nothing from him. She assumed Jetta had kept better contact with him simply because she hadn't run from home in the shadow of accidentally killing their father. Nor had she run to the arms of prostitution. Willingly.

At the mention of her brother Jetta froze. As well as severing most ties with Tessa, Jetta had cut nearly all of them as well with Ludolf. Such family matters were not of importance to her. Especially when Jetta had sought help from Ludolf during one of her lowest moments and he pushed her away. What a wonderful family. She thought sadly and reflected on her almost family that had been snatched from her years ago. Jetta never wanted to have a family again, ever.
"I have not seen nor heard from the bloody bastard we call brother. Nor do I have any desire to. Why have you seen him? Is he here?" Panic began to set in. Jettie couldn't see her eldest sibling - she wouldn't.

Tessa quirked an eyebrow at her sister's reaction. It certainly hadn't been what she had expected from her. Ludolf had never been a particularly doting older brother but he wasn't what Tessa would have called a brute either. She had come across far worse men, though she had very quickly learned how to deal with them. "Not to my knowledge, no. Has he done something to displease you?" There was a very noticeable edge of derision in her voice as she asked the question.
If Tessa knew Ludolf to be around Hogsmeade, would she pay him a visit? Perhaps. He was a man after all and a man had friends and though Ludolf might be poor as ever, Tessa might still feel inclined to boast of her business to him. Owning and running a brothel was something she took pride in - working in one was another matter but those days were over for Tessa. For the most part anyway.
Jetta scoffed and kicked at the snow in front of her like an impatient child. Had he done anything to displease her? Of course not. What could their precious heir of a brother have done? He only cast her out, labeled her a whore and screamed how he'd see her in hell. There was nothing displeasing about that. Nothing at all.
But what's done is done, no sense in going back and revisiting the past with someone who clearly showed no interest. "Of course not Tess, we just don't get along anymore. I haven't seen him in nearly five years." It's been even longer since she had a civil conversation with her sister.

Tessa raised her eyebrows in mild surprise. Five years? Clearly it was a genetic thing for Van Patten girls to estrange themselves from their siblings, they might as well have never been related in the first place. It wasn't so much that Tessa didn't like her siblings, more that she had next to no feeling of obligation toward them and didn't feel the need to go out of her way to see them or keep up correspondence. Not to mention the awkward fact that she had left home unannounced leaving their father's corpse behind.
"Pity," she remarked bluntly, not sounding at all as though she meant it as anything more than a throw away comment. "I suppose you've gotten married, haven't you?" she said quite suddenly, a look of disdain plain on her features. "Such a waste," she murmured under breath, scowling all the while as she glanced back over her shoulder and then focused back on Jetta again.
Jetta nearly laughed at the mention of marriage. It has never once been an option for her, even after she slept with Charie he didn't propose anything - even though it was a possibility that she was expecting. She hadn't gotten her course for this month, but that could be played off as simply being late. Right? There was no way she could be pregnant. It only happened once and he was in love with that Eury person. Jetta didn't even know her and she hated her. She hated her for possessing Charlie's heart when she so wanted it.
"Me married? No, never. I've never even been engaged." She sighed as the snow fell down heavier. It was going to be a long, unsatisfying walk home and she briefly considered going over to Charlie's, but then she realized he was probably in America by now. "I'm single, happily single. How about you? Any particular sweethearts?"

Tessa was privately a little pleased her sister had not conformed to the idea of marriage, she would rather feel the need to disassociate herself further with her if that had been the case. Was there an inkling to introduce her little sister to her trade? Perhaps a little. "I'm pleased to hear it. I received an offer once but I suppose the fact he was intoxicated, naked and in the process of handing over a handful of money doesn't exactly count..." The only enticement Tessa found in the prospect of engagement was the diamond encrusted ring, otherwise she saw no benefits in the slightest.
"As for sweethearts, all men are sweethearts if they have the Gringotts vault to back it up. Romance and love is for those soft in the head and I would rather not be ranked amongst those sorts. Love is a business." She stared at her sister then with a criticizing eye, noting certain things about her appearance. "I don't suppose you happen to be looking for employment?"
Never in her life had Jetta felt more insulted than she did when her sister practically asked if she was willing to whore herself out like some slut. Jet could count on two fingers the men she had intercourse with, Tessa on the other hand probably would need organs and then half the cells in her body. "I'm afraid to tell you I am employed but thank you for your oh so generous offer." She snorted in reply. The nerve of some people.
She would love to be married some day, perhaps to Charlie, and have babes running around crazily. They'd grow old together, watch as life passed them by. If only she could get him away from the blasted drink. "I would prefer to have needles stuck in my eyes than a man whom I don't know between my legs."

Tessa couldn't help but smirk with amusement at her sister's reaction. It was amusing to say the least, even if she was being rejected what she honestly thought was a generous offer. She couldn't help but note that without the desire for money, she felt very much the same as her younger sister. She had never liked the actual gritty details of the job herself but the money had always been enough to keep her content. That is, content until she next felt rabid with greed.
"As you wish, sister dearest," she replied patronizingly, leering at the blonde with an insincere lift at the corner of her lips. "My doors are always open to you, it's just a matter of when." She flashed her sister a gloating smile. She was admittedly a little irked by the refusal but was convinced that it was only a matter of time before she came to the end of her fortune and had to rely on her older sister for a source of income. And Tessa wouldn't be just giving her money, sister or not, she'd have to earn it.
Jetta wrapped her thin coat around her body and grimaced as the snow picked up speed. At this rate there would be three feet of snow in under an hour, and she was too far from home still to be caught out in this type of weather. Although she was having a real blast talking to her sister for the first time in years, it was time to be heading home.
"I fear to know which doors you are referring to Tessa." Jetta frowned at her sister and then gestured towards the sky, "It's getting dangerous out here, I ought to be heading home." With one last look at her sister, Jetta turned her back and made her way back home.
