WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU LEAVE SCHOOL

    this week - internships

We at the Daily Prophet believe that it is never too early to decide what one wants to do in the future, and this is especially true with the young students currently at Hogwarts. While it is many months away until the current seventh will leave school and begin their journeys in the adult wizarding world, the Daily Prophet has decided to have to special interviews from current interns, attempting to advise current seventh years on what they could do next year. Also to younger years, in attempts it may help them pick their NEWT and OWL choices.

    Healing Internships
From Alexander Tedlow, current Potion and Plant Poisoning intern at Hogsmeade Hospital - “Hogsmeade hospital is great because it’s in Hogsmeade and that’s where I live. Being a healer is enjoyable, but a lot more work than I thought it would be. You need NEWTs, and good grades in them - Es at a minimum - also picking the right NEWT for your intended speciality is always a good idea. I wouldn’t be very good at my job had I not done potions and herbology.

From George Carmichael, current Creature-Induced Injuries intern at St. Mungo’s - “Interning at St. Mungo’s has been extremely rewarding. You get to help people in a real, immediate way, and that in and of itself is worth the long hours. You can intern in any of the major healing disciplines -- provided you have the correct NEWTs, of course. The profession requires high NEWTs in all core subjects, as well as those relevant to each discipline -- for example, along with my core subjects, I also needed Care of Magical Creatures to best do my job in the Creatures ward. It’s demanding work, but I would never dream of doing anything else!”

From Kelly Simmons, current mediwitch in training - “Becoming a mediwitch wasn’t always my dream, but I needed a job after finishing my OWLs. And I cannot lie, it was the best decision I ever made. Being able to save people’s lives, and while we’re not healers, we still do amazing work and I cannot imagine a better job. It’s certainly not for the faint of heart though, I thought I was going to faint about seventeen times during my first week! Maybe not that much but it certainly was close! To become a mediwitch (or mediwizard), you don’t need to have NEWTs, but I’m sure they would come in handy. Core subjects are a must, and I’ve found my care of magical creatures OWL to come in very handy.”

    Ministry Internships
From Jacob Lennox, current first year auror-in-training - “Qualifying for the auror program is difficult, and the program itself requires a lot of hard work, but in the end, it’s very rewarding, and

you are making a real difference in the world. Becoming an auror requires high NEWT scores in all of the core subjects, as well as passing various aptitude tests. It’s not really for the faint of heart, but it’s worth the effort, in the end.”

From Gertrude Baker, current intern in the Department of Magical Law Enforcement - “In my personal opinion, which I admit will be biased in some form, an internship in the department of magical law enforcement is an excellent idea. From this starting point, you can then go work in any sub-department here. That includes the improper use of magic office, misuse of muggle artifacts, as well as remain in the main sub-department and become a lawyer or a interrogator. I came into this internship knowing what I wanted out of it, but if you don’t, that’s fine too. Also I think it is a very rewarding job, being able to work with law enforcement and keeping people safe within the magical community. What particular NEWTs you do does not matter for this internship, however good grades are helpful, and I would suggest a range of core subjects.”

From Belfast Connolly, current trainee hit-wizard - “Training as a Hit Wizard is one of the most rewarding things I’ve ever done. I highly recommend it.”

    Other Internships
From Angie Swan, current apprentice curse-breaker - “I had never envisioned doing something like this in my earlier years at school, but now I cannot imagine doing anything else. I am challenged both intellectually and physically every day. Even as an apprentice, I have traveled the world and seen places I could have only dreamed of. I was fortunate enough to have the right NEWTs in Arithmancy, Ancient Runes, Charms, Transfiguration, Defense Against the Dark Arts, and Potions- all of which are used constantly in the field. Be prepared to keep studying and advancing along the way!”

From Kieran Abernathy, current intern at the Daily Prophet - “Interning for the Daily Prophet isn’t my first job, but it’s definitely one that I highly recommend, and I look forward to being a full-fledged reporter soon enough. As a Daily Prophet intern, you get to see the news happen, and make it happen.”

The Daily Prophet would like to thank all of the people who took time out of their day to give interviews. Next week’s report will be on jobs that too not require an internship.
