Bethany's father was emotionally abusive especially after the death of her mother.
Brendan's family was originally super wealthy but one of the ancestors kinda lost his entire bit of the family wealth betting and just making poor decisions. Gambling is a bad habit for him that he hasn't had to exploit since being a teacher.
Ella is a very talented pencil artist and probably painted when she could afford it.
Garnet doesn't like house elves.
