[Gervaise Ollivander]

From the way she described it, Gervaise thought that dealing with animals was rather like dealing with wands—one had to have the right balance of knowledge, respect, and trust for the endeavor to be a successful one. Curious to see this hypothesis in action, the wizard nodded.

“If it won’t be a bother.”

"Not a bother at all," she said, shaking her head. There wasn't much to do anyways for the day – she'd put away the latest boxes of supplies that had come in, and had cleaned most of the droppings from the animal's cages. She'd do the last of them on the way out the door.

As she walked up to the second story, Amelia remembered to skip the faulty step. She didn't fancy tripping on it again and stumbling into her current customer's arms, like she did with Mr Calathes. She still blushed at the memory, and attempted to shake it out of her mind as she got to the top step. She made a mental note to fix it when Mr Ollivander left.

She inhaled the scent of the room. It was quite musty, but nonetheless, thanks to magic the smell of droppings was almost extinct. It smelled no worse than a barn packed with fresh hay. At least to her – she'd gotten used to the scent by now. "This is where we keep our larger animals – mostly cats, birds and dogs." she motioned around the room, smiling proudly. The animals all turned to look at the newcomer, tilting their heads curiously. They were all particularly vibrantly colored in different ways. Some had rather unusual markings while others had unusual colored eyes, or coats.

Gervaise followed the witch upstairs, raising an eyebrow as she evaded one step entirely, but following suit for good measure.

The creatures in the room above ranged from the mundane (though perhaps two fit that description, and only in comparison to their companions) to the downright gaudy, with every imaginable coloring in between. It was a great deal for the wizard to take in, but he continued to speak as he did so, looking from this cage to that, trying not to fancy what one particularly exotic lizard would be like if stuffed into a wand.

“I hadn’t realized you used your upper storeys,” the wizard said as he walked slowly about the space. “Of course I see how crowded the main floor is every time I walk by, but I suppose I must have thought you kept everything else in baskets ‘round the back or something,” Gerviase added, chuckling, “as foolish as that sounds.”

Amelia secretly swelled with pride when Mr Ollivander seemed a little bit speechless. The animals up here, besides being exotic, were so lovely – each had their own personalities. Amelia had come to get to know them all from working at the shop. The vision of all these high maintenance, extravagant birds being stuffed in baskets in the back made her laugh. “You’d be surprised at how many of these would throw absolute fits at being stuffed in such a way,” she replied, eyeing a particularly fluffy and pompous looking bird. “Though the fact that we keep more animals up here is rather surprising to our non-regular customers. It’s a treat to show them up here.”

Gervaise wondered if this area was Weasley’s doing or that of his manager—the wandmaker did not think the redhead to be a particularly hands-on businessman, but knew the other wizard had ample experience with creatures and the ilk.

“Have you managed to resist the urge to take one home with you?” Gervaise asked as he tentatively reached out a hand to touch the plumage of a particularly brightly colored bird.

Amelia smiled at the wandmaker's inquisition. Having a love of animals, and an even greater love for homeless animals, Amelia had to resist (on a plethora of occasions) the urge to bring some of them home with her. "Resist?" the witch laughed, watching Mr Ollivander stroke the bird's plumage. "Yes, so far, but that's only because I've reasoned that I have no room to keep them at home." Perhaps once she married – if she married – she'd be able to keep a few other animals with her, if her future husband didn't mind, that is.

In spite of himself, Gervaise wondered what ‘home’ was like for the witch—was there a husband and children filling it to the brim? Did she share residence with her parents or a married sister? Was she one of the (rather startling) women who chose to live alone?

“You could always magic them a bit smaller,” he suggested slyly, “so as to make space less of a concern—though I wouldn’t fancy being there when the magic wore off!”

Amelia grimaced, laughing. Yes the image of her aunt and uncle gobsmacked at the sudden invasion of birds in their parlor was quite hilarious, though she wouldn't fancy being there for the aftermath either. "No, that doesn't sound like a pleasant situation at all!" she replied, going over to a cage and opening the door. One of the birds, noticing the signal that he was about to be released, flapped it's wings excitedly and hopped onto her arm once able to.

"Plus, I do not believe they would like being smaller. They like their strength, I think. It helps them fly against the wind." And a flight sounded so good to her right now after a long day's work. She smiled back at Mr Ollivander. "Would you like to hold him?"

Gerviase was rather taken aback at the question, and eyed the bird warily in spite of himself. Owls were one thing, but his primary interaction with anything else feathered was with said feathers, rather than a…livelier sample. Were all birds as placid as owls, or would this one try to peck his eyes out if he held it wrong?

With an internal sigh, he replied, “It wouldn’t mind?” Gerviase was not over-the-moon at the opportunity, but was curious—and was not keen to look the coward in front of a pretty girl, besides.

Amelia looked at the bird and then back to the wand maker before shaking her head. “I don’t believe it would.” she said, holding out her arm to him.

As he extended an arm to take the bird, a clock from somewhere in the shop—a hidden back, Gervaise assumed—chimed, reminding the wizard that his time was not wholly his own. His arm retracted, and he shrugged an apology. “Another time, perhaps.”

As the wandmaker retracted his arm, Amelia furrowed her brows. Then the chime of the clock registered to her and she gave a light gasp. "Oh, I do beg your pardon," she said, hurriedly putting the bird back in his cage. "I've been so focused on showing you the animals, I'm afraid I forgot you were on a clock yourself." She led him back downstairs. "Please forgive me, though do come back again. That bird is one of my favorites and he likes to be paid attention to far more often than I have on my hands."

“I would be a poor gentleman if I denied a pretty girl,” Gervaise laughed, “or her pretty feathered friend. Until next time!”

With one last, quick smile, the wizard departed.
