Appearance:

Her hair is a dull brown, lying flat even after it's been in a plait all day. Her eyes are lighter than some of her siblings', and her cheeks add an extra childish roundness to her face. She has just begun to lose her child's stature: the last year or so has seen the beginnings of a growth spurt - currently she is 4’8”, but likely won’t be for long - and she looks a little skinnier than she used to. She is right-handed for most activities, though switches her mother's wand between hands, unsure yet of where it feels more comfortable.

History:

1874 | Zadie is born, with a fair few siblings to precede her, and none to come afterwards.

1875 | Ottilie and Orpha leave for Hogwarts, though Zadie is too young to pay much mind. Solomon is her favourite subject to sit and observe, and he is protective of her.

1877 | The family moves to Hogsmeade. Zadie totters around the new house, though sometimes cries for the old one.

1878 | She has not had much opportunity to know half-sibling Hiram very well, but all of a sudden she has another brother in the house, and the oddest thing about him is that he can't talk, because he has no tongue! No one gives four-year-old Zadie a proper explanation of why or how so the curiosity eats at her instead, and she pesters people at every opportunity.

1880 | Solomon leaves for Hogwarts, and the house is even quieter. Hiram is around, but he is working - now at a florist's - and her parents are equally busy, so Zadie must find ways to amuse herself. She finds out that she, like the rest of the family, can do magic when she accidentally summons a ball to her from where she has been sitting, jealously watching a few boys playing a game outside the window. 

1882 | Hudson leaves for Hogwarts.

1884 | Plague spreads in Hogsmeade. Zadie catches it, but it soon passes. Not so for her mother, who starts laughing and can't stop. Until she does. Zadie hears it from the next room, and has nightmares about that last laugh for months. 

1885 | There is some kind of explosion in the Ministry, but all that matters is her father goes to work one day - a normal day - and never comes back. Zadies hates it. Everyone is sad, but everyone still carries on, and the house is even emptier. Half the time she just wants to cling tighter to her siblings, and other times she wants to be grown up, to go about her business by herself. Once generally a lively girl, she now falls into a pattern of wilder mood swings, from happy and hyper to sullen and unresponsive all in the same day. Inside, she's angry, she thinks, but it is the explosive kind, and doesn't come out much. Instead, she sneaks off when she can, and she finds herself the perfect distraction. It is fun, first and foremost, sort of a rush and sort of a challenge, a puzzle - picking the perfect moment, finding something that will slip in her pocket. She steals from a variety of shops, not for need - although they don't have much - but for some strange urge, for the delight she gets in peeking at her treasures later. 

When she starts getting caught - not in the shops, but by her siblings, later - she starts playing up the snark, though she is pleased for the attention. The attitude doesn't get her very far, though, as she is shipped to her grandfather back in London, and he keeps an annoying close eye on her at all times. She withdraws into herself, reluctantly fashions herself a more obedient front, does whatever he tells her. He's old and slow and boring, though, and she has to settle for small pleasures, like digging out her secret box of treasures, a sort of magpie collection of odds and ends she wasn't made to return, that now have sentimental value, that have become hers.

1886 | Finally, it's her turn to go to Hogwarts! When September rolls around, the Sorting Hat has gone missing - which means Zadie is arbitrarily placed in Hufflepuff. These first couple weeks confirm that she really doesn't feel like a Hufflepuff: finally, she is sorted into Slytherin. She doesn't hate this, although some of her new housemates do exasperate her.

1887 | So far, she has been well-behaved (enough) at Hogwarts - a few detentions at worst - and her thievery habit has quieted down a little. When she returns to school for second year, she also finds herself successfully on the Slytherin quidditch team as their new Keeper.

Personality:

Intelligent. Observant. Curious. Sly. Daring. Can be extremely energetic, but her sunniness comes and goes. At the same time, she has a real temper, and can be argumentative and impulsive. Craves attention, but distracts herself by withdrawing and setting herself her own challenges.
