every time I look for you the sun goes down
When it had been Theodore's turn, Nathaniel had been eager. After all, it was not every day one's son purchased his first wand, prepared to go off to school for the first time. He had swelled with pride as they had left the store, his son proudly gripping his new cottonwood wand with a smile on his face, and could still remember the boy's enthusiasm as they had walked to the wand shop. It seemed as only a breath had passed since that date, and today Thaniel's eagerness was replaced by trepidation. This shopping trip was a milestone in the life of little Cecily, and her father could not help but wish the day had never come.
Like all incoming Hogwarts students, Cecily Gallivan was in need of a wand. Likeùhe hopedùmany parents of incoming Hogwarts students, the wizard was hesitant to let his daughter take that stepùand step out of his Wellingtonshire home to join her brother at the castle. When Theodore had left, it had been the picture of a young ladùa young firstbornùleaving home to start his magical life. Cecily, in this way, had the misfortune of being the younger of the Gallivan children, and the one most akin to Nathaniel himself; the prospect of losing her was more than a tad daunting to the man, who was not sure just what he would do without a child around the house.
Still, this was something that Cee wanted, and he had always had something of a difficulty refusing the young girl. Besides, would he rather she have been a squib? æIs it even technically a squib when her father is a muggleborn and her mother a muggle?'
Clutching his daughter's hand, more for his benefit than for her own, the lanky wizard opened the door to Ollivander's, stepping into the shop, inhaling the scent of wood and polish. "Now Cecily," he instructed, "You must be on your best behaviour, and you must let Mr. Ollivander do his business efficientlyùI know you must be excited, but you cannot let that make you into a... nuisance." He was loathe to suggest his daughter might be anything less than an angel, but he was not enthused at the prospect of dallying in this particular milestone.

The young witch was so excited about her wand. Even if she was still scared of Hogwarts she wanted to own her wand so badly. She was always envious of Theodore for having his own wand and finally she was able to have her own wand! In the previous days she was trying to imagine the shape of her future wand. Even if all of them were made of wood they had different shapes. Theodore's wand seemed a little longer than her father's wand. Besides the colour of the wood was different. Some were lighter, some were darker. Cee really wondered if that had to do with someone's personality. Probably the darker your personality was the darker your wand was. Theodore's wand seemed darker than dad's but he was the best brother in the whole word. Cee once heard that wands change colours, but she never believed such thing. She also knew that really powerfull wizards knew how to make a silver animal jump from their wand. Cee really wondered if she would be ever powerfull enough to make such things. But if she ever became she would totally make bunnies jump from her wand because they were SO cute!
Cee listened quietly to her father's instructions and then nodded, making some strawberry blonde coloured curls jump with her movement. She didn't wanted to make Mr Ollivander's work difficult, so she was deffinetly going to be quiet and patient. She had no idea what she was supposed to do to choose her wand. Probably she was going to choose her favourite one and buy it? Or fight with something which would show the perfect wand for her? Cee had no idea, but she knew that once she had a wand in her hand she had more chances to defeat a troll.
" Sure papa, I won't talk much, unless Mr Ollivander asks me something." Cee quietly assured her father and then sweetly smiled.

How could he have doubted her? Of course Cecily knew what behaviour was expected of her, and of course she was angelic enough to behave with such decorum even if it was not demanded. Nathaniel felt foolish for even issuing such obvious instruction, and simply chalked it up to nervesùit was not every day that one's youngest (for all that it was unlikely she would always remain so) purchased their first wand, after all. He gave the young witch a nod and a smile; whether it was meant to reassure Cee or Thaniel himself, he could not say. I should have known better than to doubt it, my dear, the wizard wanted to say, but was not quite so accustomed to such public sentimentality.
Instead, he called out for the proprietor, unable to see the man amidst the crowded shelves.
When it had been Nathaniel's turn to acquire his first wand, he had loathed every instant of it. It had been not from Ollivander's but from some other, London-based wandmaker of the timeùprobably since gone out of business, for all he knewùthat had been recommended by the school; he had gone without accompaniment, his parents positively aghast at the prospect. Even upon getting a reaction from the wand that he would eventually go on to purchase, his face did not light up as he had seen Theodore's do, but he had been filled with an ample feeling of dread, as if this confirmed what he had tried to hide up until now. For all that he was reluctant to lose both his children to Hogwarts, he was glad that the pair got joy out of the situation, rather than fear.

Cee tried to remain more quiet than usual, just as her father expected her to be. Her wand was going to be the most important tool in her wizarding life, so picking the right one was important. She would never do magic without a wand and surely, her spells wouldn't be good enough if she didn't had the right wand. The girl tried to concentrate and block any other thoughts right now, this was an important day. Still, she was still worried about her future wand. What if the wand was too powerfull for her? What if she couldn't control the magic and do bad things? What if her wand didn't liked her? Of course, a wand was only a piece of wood, as someone would say, a tool, but since it was such a magical tool Cee concidered that is somehow lived.
The girl turned her eyes to her father, who seemed to be as worried as she was. He wanted her to find the perfect wand, of course and probably he was worried that she wasn't talented or strong enough to have her own wand. And what if she mispelled a spell and ended up hurting someone? This was quite possible and Cee was often quite clumsy. Besides, when she was worried she tended to misspell things.

'What am I going to do?' Ollivander thought to himself in dismay, staring a note written in his own hand while his own hands shook. This was probably the last straw. The last confirmation that he was probably going mad. He'd already performed the diagnostic spell to tell him that the letter was no forgery and yet he simply could not remember writing it.
That wasn't right.
That wasn't right at all.
As a young man he could remember all the events from the time he was four and three quarters to the present date quite clearly. Academics had called his memory pristine, and somewhat idyllic, and some had even remarked that it was such a waste that a man with such a brilliant mind had simply removed himself from the circles of academia to drop out of Hogwarts before he'd even sat his OWL exams to study wandmaking. Alfred remembered quite clearly telling the fool that wandmaking was in his blood and that his memory was only useful in the capacity of wandmaking.
But for a while now he'd begun to notice gaps in his memory, incidents that he could not recall properly simple things at first like a misplaced lunch, or forgetting peoples names but he'd began to notices large gaps that his non-existent imagination had attempted to fill, and these gaps were around his wands. Wands were his first, and now only, love, and he could not think for the life of his why something so important to him such as which wands had been sold to whom, or where a certain wand was located, could now simply not be there for him to recall.
He stared at the letter that had been written in his own hand. It was accepting his elder brother Gerbold Octavius', invitation for a visit to his and his wife's little country house. It seemed that Gerbold was wondering if Alfred was interested in taking his own son Gervaise, as an apprentice for while Alfred's store in Hogsmeade was thriving his own store in Diagon Alley had not seen much business lately due to the revelation.
The letter said he'd accepted and would stay around for a month or few before coming back to Hogsmeade. It said that since his sons were well equipped to run the store and the busy period was indeed over he would go. He frowned. The letter indeed made sense and as he signed it and gave it to the owl he hoped that maybe the break from the hustle and bustle of Hogsmeade, his daughter and sons might be the break his mind was telling him he needed.
He trundled to the front of the store without much purpose and saw two rather well dressed people standing in the entry. The presence of the younger girl by his side meant one thing, like it always did.
"May I help you?" He asked, spreading his hands in a well practiced gesture.

OOC | Henceforth, I shall ignore this thread until Cee has her wand =P
"It seems my daughter is in need of a wand," Nathaniel offered, perhaps more stifflyùand with a tad more reluctanceùthan he would have liked. Surely it was his role as a father to be nothing but enthused by the prospect, to share in his daughter's excitement? Surely his apprehension should not rival Cecily's own? Did his not being wholly human impact, in some way, his reaction to the whole ordealùand if so, why had he not felt similarly with Theodore?ùor was it simply a normal part of his role as a parent, one that society had not deigned to inform him of? Resigned to focus more on Cecily's moment than on his own misgivings about it, he smiled encouragingly at his daughter, urging her forward.

Cecily stayed quiet as her father told her to do and watched with her hazel eyes an old man approaching. When he and her father started talking she continued being silent untill her father gave her permission to speak. Cecily took a step towards the front and did a small reverence in front of Mr Ollivander as her governess had shown her to do. Then, she took a big breath trying to look calm and smiled to Mr Ollivander.
" Hello, Mr Ollivander. It is my pleasure to meet you. Would you please help me find a wand?" the girl spoke gently and politely, picking carefully each of the words. This was probably one of those moments which her father couldn't help her a lot. She was picking her wand, so she had to be carefull and pick the right one, the wand which suited her personallity best. There were hundreds of wands around Cecily and she honestly hoped that at least one of them suited her personallity. Her wand was going to be one of her most important belongings as her life passed and she graduated from Hogwarts. Some Upper Class wizards tended to buy a second and even a third wand but Cecily believed that it was useless to do so. Only her first wand was going to work properly in her hands.

"A first year, yes, and your name?" He asked, his general grumpiness disappearing with the thought of doing what he had trained for years to do. He studied the young girl for a moment before his own hand sought out his wand which usually could be found in its pocket. It wasn't. He frowned for a moment and gave a whistle. The enchanted measuring tape which had been off somewhere sped into action and appeared from where it had been measuring the distance between two spiders nests. Alfred stared at those for a moment before he sighed and tried to remember the last place he'd had his wand and trundled back into his storeroom, luckily convinced that he'd probably left the wand in the same area where he'd found the letter. He grabbed another wand from one of the shelves and handed it to the young girl. He gave a scornful look at the tape measure which was measuring the distance around the girls head. He barked. "Enough of that." The tape recoiled and chose to follow him around like a wounded puppy. He ignored it but decided that he would probably have to pack it when he journeyed to visit his brother. His sons wouldn't use it properly or would teach it bad habits, and it would pine for him. "Here." He handed Cecily the wand. "Ash, Peacock Feather 8"."

Cee stared at the wand Mr Olivander held, wondering what would happen if she took it in her hands. Would it explode or force her do things she didn't wanted to do? But, Cecily decided to trust Alfred, so picked up the wand in her hand and felt absolutely nothing. The wand didn't explode, it actually remained still in her hand and Cecily wondered if she had did something wrong. What if she made a damage to the wand?
" Ehm... Is anything wrong with the wand?" she slowly asked the man, shaking in fear inside her that she had probably destroyed the wand.

Alfred stared at the non-responsive wand with a curious expression on his face. He hadn't had a wand that refused to even respond to a wizard touch in a long time... He took it from her gently as his fingers probed the wand and he felt the familiar rush of magic as the wand knew him. He gave Cecily a sidelong glance.
"Nothing. Watch. " He said in a clipped voice and raised the wand.
" Avis" He thought of the single bird, a fledgling that he wished to summon, and sure enough a fledgling peacock chick, a yellow bird barely bigger than his hand appeared on the floor with a cheeping noise.
"Not this one then." He said as his eyebrow raised and carefully put the wand in its box and placed it back on the shelves. He glanced at the next wand box and cautiously took it down.
"Try this one, Mahogany, Unicorn Hair, 13 inches."

Something was surely wrong with her. That wand refused to work in her hands, but Mr Olivander managed to summon a bird! Cecily tried to think that he was way more experienced with magic that her, so he could do magic with any kind of wand. But his surprised expression still worried Cee. It meant that something was wrong with her. What if she was not a real witch? What if Hogwarts sent her a letter by mistake?
Be confident, Cee, she told to herself and picked up the mahogany wand in her hand. This time it was going to work. She pointed the ground and murmured the spell Mr Ollivander said a few minutes ago. This time, the wand shook a little, but then it fell dead in her hand. Nothing happened.
She gave the wand back to Mr Ollivander and looked at him with her big, curious eyes. Was he giving her the wrong wand? There were hundreds of wands around them, surely one fit her, right?

Alfred Ollivander took the second non-responsive wand off of the young girl. He shook his head at her with a slight smirk on his face.
"You don't have to say the spell lass, it's a charm they might teach you in sixth year, I'd be very much surprised if it worked now without training. " He put the wand back into the box and noticed her staring at him. Was it curiousity? or agitation? He sighed.
"Be patient, I've had children go through almost every wand in my shop only to discover that the wand that suited them best was the very next wand they tested. Each and every wand here has the ability and the chance to become that which suits you best. Just because you've tested two, or twenty or even two hundred doesn't decrease the liklihood that there is a wand out there for you." He smiled at the young girl.
"My daughter Violet, who will be your charms mistress this year, took a very long time to find the wand that suited her and when she di-" Alfred recalled that day with sudden recall. His daughter, who already looked like his late wife had gotten a wand so very similar to wife.
He shook himself and restarted the sentence.
"When a wand responded to her properly there was no doubt about it. Don't worry, we'll find the right wand for you." He reached up for another wand.
Dragon Heartstring, 10 inches, Oak.
He handed it to her and folded his arms across his chest.
"Try this one." He said gruffly.

Well, of course she couldn't make such spell work yet. When Cee realized how stupid she seemed for trying to do a spell, she blushed. Then again, it seemed pretty easy with Alfred did it. He just swung his wand and seel a weird word and then a bird appeared from nowhere. But when she tried to copy him, nothing happened. Cee guessed that she was just not experienced enough. Once she reached her Sixth Year, she was surely going to learn that spell.
Alfred gave her another wand a bit shorter than the previous one. Cecily looked around the shop and waved the wand, hoping that it was the right one. It had to be the right one! There was some weird feeling inside her, telling her it was indeed the right wand. But, nothing happened, no sparkles, nothing at all. It just made a lot of boxes fall on the ground. A lot of wands spread on the ground and Cee rushed towards them, ready to picked them up.
" Sorry, Mr Ollivander!" she said apologetically, her hand scretching to pick up one small wand, made by a beautiful, light wood. The very second her fingers touched it, sparkles started to jump from the edge of it and Cecily felt a strange feeling rush her bones. This wand had to be the right one. Cecily raised on her feet, holding the wand and smiled to Alfred. " Is this the right one?" she asked gently, curious about the answer.

"There is no doubt about it." said Alfred and held out his hand to inspect the wand that had chosen the new witch. He stared around at the mess that the former wand had caused and shook his head.
"They are always messy, leave it be. I'll get my sons to clean it up after you leave. It'll do them some good identifying which wand goes in which box.
His tipped the wand to point away from him as his fingers inspected the wand in a professional light.
"Ten inches, Unicorn Hair, Hazel." This young girl was obviously going to have a strong spirit, and unicorn hair made the wand easy to work with though the wood could be a problem. Hazel was a sensitive wood that was far to in tune with the emotional state of its owner and could be unpredictable. It was capable of outstanding magic and paired with unicorn hair the hazel wand would be extremely faithful, likely to her and her alone and at the end of her life be unusable and probably dead.
Alfred smiled at the young girl "What you've got here is an extremely faithful wand. It's a great water-diviner wand, so if it emits silvery tear-shaped puffs of smoke when you are out walking it probably means that below your feet is probably a concealed spring or well. " He nodded to himself and proceeded to the shops counter where he slipped the wand into a lengthy box and inscribed in curly script it's ingredients and description and in his most business-like tone he told her and her father the price.

He watched with great apprehension as Cecily tried wand after wand, and began to despair as it became evident that none were suited to her. Had her hectic upbringing somehow damaged her in some way, made it so that she could not find an easy place in the magical world? No, such musings were foolishùafter all, Theodore was to start his third year in the autumn, and if one child was fully functioning in that respect, surely the other would be as well! To compound the problems, Cee seemed to be growing flustered; much as it pained him to do so, Thaniel kept his distance: this was her moment, and he would not play the hovering parent and risk making her as anxious as he himself.
It was with a great swell of pride, then, that Nathaniel watched as one wand, somehow different than than those before it, did what the others could not.
And he grinned stupidly.
"Well, Mr. Ollivander, I thank you greatly for your time," the wizard said with sincerity as he laid down the necessary coin. He was relieved that the ordeal was overùit seemed far more trying on his nerves, the second time aroundùand surprised at how, in the end, the entire affair had been so simple. "With any luck, you will not see my family again for some time," he joked. Though remarried, an infant did not appear in their immediate future; even if it did, it would be another decade still before the child would need a wand. No, any further trips to Ollivander's would mean someone had been careless, had broken the wandùand that, Thaniel felt, would be more than a bit embarrassing.
"Come along, my dear," he said to Cecily, sliding the box beneath his left arm as his right hand extended towards his daughter. "I would say ours has been a successful day."
