    Last few sun days
    #1
    Private Thread
Sebastian was sitting on a stone bench in some of the last sun rays in the late of the November - he found it strange that the year was already so close to december, so close to the end of the school year, which meant that he should probably be studying on his N.E.W.Ts, instead of relaxing like this. But everything in him, told him that he should look out for Phee and Elsie. Elsie had been the one that had been hitted hardest after Bentley's death and as such he had looked very much out for her, making sure she got something to eat, making sure she stayed social with the few people she was friends with.

He trusted Elsie to get back on her feets, eventually, but he just hoped that she would be able to get through her NEWT exams. But Seb had other things and people to worry about. Luce was able to look after herself, he knew his older sister, Phee might need him, but she could always find him, and then of course there was the responsibilities as a head-boy. He was still surprised when he remembered it, but he could not exactly just stop being head-boy, even if Luce had made fun of him at the time.

"Hey Phee." he called out when he saw his little sister walk by, it had been a long time since they had talked properly.

The late autumn afternoon - nearly evening - found Miss Phoebe Beauregard exiting her final lecture of the day, both feeling slightly fatigued and quite glad that the weekend was near because as much as she enjoyed her lessons, spending two entire days without the constant pressure of academics (except for homework, of course) was rather refreshing. However, Phee was quite aware that though she would be able to escape the demands of professors and schoolwork, she would not be able to avoid the the mournful and befuddled thoughts that often plagued her ever since her eldest cousin, Bentley's untimely departure from the world - not to mention that the events of the Fall Festival had quite unnerved her, as well.

Of course, she had never been particularly close to her elder cousin as he was a good seven years her senior, but his death had emphasized for her that life could be so dreadfully short - Bentley had an entire life to live, and he had barely ample time to experience it and create his own memories and his own adventures. It was such a sad affair, but the tragic event surely must have been much more harsh upon his mother and father and his younger siblings - their pale, somber, and expressionless faces indicative of their grief during the days following the news of his death and his funeral, which seemed only natural to Phee as they were the ones whom were the closest to him whereas she was only in partial mourning. However, ever since she had been informed of his death, she could not properly sleep, concerned for her cousins and her aunt and uncle, desperately wishing she could be of more assistance to them in their time of heartache, but alas there was only so much consoling and offering murmured words of comfort she could give.

However, in addition to her family's mourning of the one person she had least expected to pass away at so young an age, the events (or those she could recollect, of course) of the Fall Festival the few weeks previous had left her rather confused. She could still remember the blues of his eyes, the way his hand seemed able to make her feel safe in his presence, protected from anything and anyone, but what she could specifically remember was how soft and warm his lips felt pressed against her own - the warmth that coursed through her body and left her craving more. However, as much as she could recollect the little things about this person whom had supposedly rescued her from an unfortunate curse, she could not identify her savior’s face save for his striking blue eyes, which rather unsettled her because this person could have been anyone - and she had kissed them! The fact that she had behaved inappropriately in the presence of a male was what had kept her from confessing her woes to her elder sister or any of her female relatives, concerned that they would judge her for having allowed him to kiss her and further judging her for enjoying it. It was not proper for young women of her social class and status to be kissing men before marriage, though it was not an uncommon practice, but Phee had never considered herself to be a hussy and neither would she ever entertain thoughts of becoming one.

As these thoughts plagued her conscience, Phee strolled down the familiar corridor that would lead her to the Great Hall with the intention of consuming an early dinner and retiring to the confines of her dormitory for the rest of the evening, thinking perhaps of completing some of the schoolwork she had been assigned for the weekend before finishing the set of handkerchiefs she was sewing that she intended to bestow as personal Christmas gifts to her family. However, her premature planning of the evening to come was brought to a halt when her ocean blue eyes found the recognizable form of her elder brother seated upon a stone bench in the last rays of sunlight. It was still difficult to believe that her brother had been selected as Head Boy for his respective year, but she had come to acknowledge that perhaps she should have never underestimated him - he did receive the Prefect position in his fifth year, after all.

“Good afternoon, Seb,” she uttered aloud pleasantly in her usual soft tone of voice as she approached him, a warm smile plastered upon her face. “How do you do upon this fine day?”

To Seb there was no doubt that he would always be there if anyone in his family needed him. Elsie held a special place in his heart, they were so close in age and were in the same house, they had shared so many classes togther that it was hard for him not to feel specially about her. Phoebe was his sister, younger sister and as such she was also holding a special place in his heart, even Luce who tended to bother him more than anyone else. He knew that it was something she only did because they cared about each other deep down.

With Bentley's untimely death, he had more or less forced himself to focus a bit more on Elsie than on anyone else, but hopefully no one would mind and forgive him easily - because it was never meant like he was trying to forget about them, or give Elsie special treatment, she just needed him more directly than the others it seemed. But now that he saw Phoebe he would take the chance to talk with her and make sure that she did not felt like she was forgotten.

"I am fine, and you?" he asked, sounding a bit more casual than his younger sister. It was typically Seb - he was casual and relaxed most of the time. In general he was not very good at being formal and sticking to social rules, even if he knew them.

“Lovely,” she answered in the same pleasant as she sat upon the bench adjacent to him, figuring that she might as well spend a few moments with her elder brother as the both of them would inevitably be heading towards the same destination, anyway - the Great Hall for supper. Besides, it has been some time since she had properly interacted with him (since Bentley’s funeral, she noted), and she was quite interested to see how he was faring, especially in regards to losing a loved one. Of course, she was aware that Seb was not anymore closer to Bentley than she had been, but it was a relative nonetheless, and Phee would be an unkind sister if she did not offer her siblings comfort during their time of grief. However, Sebastian did not appear to be in any way forlorn, which was a relief, but looks were often deceiving.

“How have you been faring these past few weeks?,” she curiously inquired as her light-blue eyes swiveled towards his face, searching for any signs of evident distress. “I trust that your classes have been going well? Have you heard from Luce of late?” Indeed, it was small-talk, but it was conversation, and Phee was of the opinion that snippets of conversation were much preferable to no discussion at all.

Seb could not help but sigh slightly when she said that she was fine. He would always be there, and it was hard for him to see them be sad. He just hoped that they all knew that he would be there for them, should they ever need him. He just usually felt like Phoebe and Lucinda were able to take care of themselves. Especially Luce, but then again - he and Luce were always making fun of each other.

"I have been well - looking after Elsie among other things." he said with a small shrug. Of course even Elsie could take care of herself, but Seb had seen how little Elsie had been eating right after Bentley's death. "My classes are hard, but I can keep up - even with Head Boy duties and all." he said with a smile and looked at Phoebe.

"I have not heard from Luce - but you should know that she and I can spend months without talking without problems, and once we are back in the same room, everything will continue as usual - like we only saw each other last a few days ago." he said with a small laugh - it felt like it was so long ago he had talked with Luce, but he knew that it would be easy to keep talking.

At the mention of their cousin Elsie, Bentley’s younger sister, Phee nodded in a solemn manner. It was a relief to acknowledge that her cousin was being a source of comfort to their cousin during her time of grief for, if Phee correctly recalled, Elsie had been quite close to her elder brother - as a matter of fact, nearly all of Vincent Beauregard’s children were close in some form or other, and the unexpectedness of Bentley’s death must have certainly come as a shock to them. On more than one occasion, due to their belonging in the same house, Phee offered her cousin Harvey, Bentley’s younger brother, some solace, but she attempted to not be overbearingly so - which was a difficulty considering Phee’s kind and slightly maternal nature. If Phee could, she’d cure everyone’s sadness and smother them with comfort and affection, but alas, she was aware that she must refrain from coming across as insufferable, and she seemed to be doing quite a good job of it so far.

“It is good that you are there to offer her comfort,” Phee murmured softly in a genuine tone. “If only all of our cousins were receiving the same kind of solace that Elsie’s been receiving - poor little Lottie is devastated, but she is the only member of our family in the Ravenclaw House, which is an unfortunate obstacle in our way of comforting her.” Of course, she often saw one of her youngest cousins in the Great Hall for mealtimes - which, Phee is increasingly realizing with some concern that was occurring less frequently as if her young cousin did not desire food at all - but it was so seldom that she and Lottie were able to properly converse, and Phee often received the impression that Lottie did not want to socialize, even with the members of her own family.

“Oh, I do not doubt that your classes are a bit difficult,” Phee said as she returned her brother’s smile with one of her own, her own being decidedly more softer than his. “N.E.W.Ts level must be quite time-consuming.” Although Phee was not incompetent in comprehending her academic classes, she has never considered herself to be a “bright student”, and therefore, the prospect of enduring another level of academics after her O.W.Ls slightly worried her - however, she would never admit her concerns outloud. Not to mention that she often had a tendency to allow her anxiousness to get the better of her before realizing that the situation was far more manageable that she believed it would be.

“I sometimes forget that you and Luce do not correspond as much as she and I do,” Phee stated after a moment of comfortable silence, straightening her posture after realizing that she was slightly slouching (of course, she was aware that she should not have to uphold the rules of propriety around her own elder brother, but years of strict instillment of etiquette lessons by her mother caused her to be more alert of her behavior). Like all siblings, Sebastian and Lucinda often had their little (and rather silly, in Phee’s opinion) squabbles, but it was still evident that the both of them quite loved one another as siblings only could. “You know me,” she giggled, her blue eyes shining with mirth as she poked him gently in the arm before continuing, “a few days without speaking to my family can seem like a lifetime.”

Seb had a stab of guilt when Phee reminded him of Lottie. His younger cousin should not be forgotten just simply because she was in another house than the rest of the family. How could he have completely forgotten to be there for Lottie, but spend so much time making sure that Elsie was all right. That Elsie was in Gryffindor as well could simply not be used as an excuse, at least not an excuse Sebastian would accept. He was head-boy, if he could not even look out for his own family in a dark time, then how was he supposed to be a good example for the entire school population.

"Nothing I cannot overcome. I will admit it was a relief only taking the classes I find interesting or necessary for a future. It gives me the time to focus on what I want to do. So I have more time for my classes, even though they have become harder." he said with a small smile. He was actually quite enjoying the thought of finishing up school this summer, but for now he would have to deal with it. It would also be sad having to finish seven years of daily life going on Hogwarts.

He laughed when Phee mentioned that he and Luce did not wrote to each other very often. He cared about Luce, of course he did that, but it was always just something that slid into the things that he could do another time, and then he continued to push it another day, and another day. Not that Luce wrote to him either, so he did not feel so guilty. He knew that if it was something very serious then he would write to Luce, and he hoped that Luce would write to him as well if something very serious happened.

(If you think your post is forced and crappy, then mine is worse.... XD)

As Sebastian spoke of his classes, Phee could not help but feel slightly envious that he was enjoying the classes that he desired to attend rather than be forced to attend them. Of course, Phee was aware that in nearly a year she would be able to have the same opportunity to drop a few classes as well, but she knew that she would have to put some thought into which classes she believed would best be dropped. A decision that she was currently having some difficulty with considering that she would not mind if she forsook all classes that were not Charms, Herbology, and her electives of Divination and Earth Magic - all of the classes she was aware would only somewhat benefit her in life, especially if she desired to uphold an occupation after she graduated.

With an inward sigh, Phee set aside her indecision to refocus her attention upon her elder brother, brushing a stray, blonde hair as she did so. "Oh, certainly not," Phee agreed as she turned her head towards him, a small smile gracing her pretty, pale face. "You are far more intelligent than you give yourself credit for, and you have proven time and time again that you can exceed expectations - I see bright things happening in your future." Phee nearly felt as she were making a prediction (which she was proud to admit often came true, or at least they did during Divination lectures), but she was aware that she was not - she was speaking the truth. No one would have ever expected her brother to become a Prefect nor even a Head Boy, and - besides Phee herself - she could only assume that his professors and the Hogwarts staff detected some potential in him, and the pride she felt towards her brother was immense.

"Speaking of your future," Phee continued after a moment of silence, turning her body in the direction of his in order to see his face clearly, "do you have an inkling of what you wish to do after graduation?"

Seb just smiled and looked at his sister, he was hoping that she was focusing on her classes and got good grades for her OWLs, but he knew better than butting in on her constantly to make sure she studied. He could not help but smile slightly shy when Phee insisted that he was going to do great – “Seriously, Phee. Sometimes you make it completely clear that you belong in Hufflepuff.” He said with a laugh and could not help but give her a small hug. There was something nice about his baby sister being so trusting and confident in someone else’s abilities. It was not that he doubted in himself, but having your own thoughts about something was not the same as having someone else believe in him. Of course – he knew deep down that Luce was proud of him and have just as much faith in his abilities to do this well. They just had a completely different approach to one another that meant they would just bother each other and tease each other. It was just the way they worked together.

“Why are we talking about me all the time?” he asked with a smile, but looked at her anyway. “No, I have not really thought about, though I guess it will be in the ministry somewhere.” He said with a shrug with his shoulders. It was somehow just easy to talk with Phee about this, but he was happy that they could talk so easy. “Now, promise me that you will remember to study. You have OWLs this year, and I do not want to be near Luce or mother if you do not get acceptable owls, I know they will put some of the blame on me, because I am in here as well.” He said with a smile. He was not worried, but he could not help but worry – but then, Phee had never made him worry before about it.

"Well, I sincerely hope that what you say is a good thing," Phoebe said with a little laugh after her brother mentioned that it was clearly evident that she belonged in Hufflepuff House. Personally, Phee was quite proud to be a Hufflepuff. Of course, there were many people who devalued the house of Hufflepuff for their humble and caring ways, deeming them to be "weaklings", but Phoebe was well aware that this was not the truth. A Hufflepuff possessed just as much strength as any Gryffindor, Ravenclaw, or Slytherin, but they displayed their strength in a much more subdued manner than any of the other houses did.

Phee was surprised by the small embrace her brother had given her, but she did not show it and instead returned his hug with a tiny one of her own. It was pleasant to sit there on the stone bench and speak with her elder brother about small, mundane things - and it was so seldom that she and Sebastian ever had the time to speak to one another due to their house differences - and Phee rather wished that she had found her brother earlier so that they could have spent more time together. Perhaps Seb would accompany her to dinner and keep her company? Of course, she would quite understand if he would wish to sup with his own friends, but an evening together would not be a bother, would it?

As Sebastian began to lecture upon the importance of studying and OWLs, Phee resisted the urge to roll her eyes - she had heard the same lecture day after day from her professors, she did not need to be told for the umpteenth time! However, Phee managed to refrain from doing so, and she looked upon her brother with one of her signature kind smiles, and respectfully listened to him speak. After his speech was concluded, Phee put one of her hands gently on top of Sebastian's as she responded, "I highly doubt that if I receive unsatisfactory marks upon my examinations, Mother and Luce would not put the blame on you - it would be entirely my fault. However, yes - I do promise to study diligently to do well on my O.W.Ls." Phee never considered herself to be a person who studied strenuously for examinations, but it was a decidedly less daunting task now that she was aware that someone was counting on her to succeed, and therefore, she would study and do well upon her O.W.Ls for her favorite and only brother.

He could not help but smile and look at Phee as she asked if he meant it in a good way. “Of course I mean it in a good way. There is good and bad things about all the houses. You know how Gryffindor and Slytherin are rumored to not be able to get along? Do you not think that Luce and I are above that? Hufflepuff’s are kind, caring, hard-working, among other things. If you search for inner strength and someone you can rely on to look out for you, then a hufflepuff is a very good friend.” He said with a smile. Through the years Sebastian had learned to look at the good things in all the houses, and he was happy that he did that, it was definitely easier being a Head-boy if you did not judge people on their houses, because technically it was never their choice which house they got in.

Seb knew that it was far too short time they used to talk with one another, but he actually really enjoyed spending time with his younger sister, Phoebe was always so kind and both him and Luce tried to keep Phee out of it when they had another discussion. Because they were old enough to deal with it themselves without dragging their younger sister into it. Even their parents tried to avoid getting into the middle of it, but he did not mind. They were siblings, in the end they would look out for one another, at least he knew that he would look out for Luce and wish for her to be happy, and he felt that deep down it was the same from him.

“I trust you. But I also know that they would say that I should have spotted it, I am the head-boy and your older brother. Sorry for being naturally concerned about you.” He said with a chuckle and promised himself that he would not step more into it, because honestly – even he was tired of hearing the professors reminding him to study for the NEWTs.

“Indeed,” Phoebe acknowledged with a fond smile as Sebastian proceeded to praise the good qualities of a Hufflepuff, and the pride she possessed for the house that was placed into only seemed to increase. However, she had to partially disagree with her brother’s view that Gryffindors and Slytherins were incapable of harmonizing. Indeed, it was true that they rarely get on favorably, but it was not an impossible feat to accomplish - she was quite confident that if Gryffindors and Slytherins set aside their differences, they would get along capitally, but alas, some things never change, and the rivalry between the two houses was no different.

However, as Sebastian went on to apologize for being concerned for her well-being, Phee could not help but to reassure him that his interest in her academic affairs (she would rather not have him privy to her personal affairs - she was certain that he would be aghast if he was aware of what had occurred during the Fall Festival the month previous) was welcome as she was not particularly driven otherwise. “Dear brother!,” she exclaimed in surprise, her big, blue eyes widening slightly, “Do not ever apologize for your concern! Your consideration for my health and success is not only appreciated, but welcoming as well. Besides, it is a sibling’s duty to care for one another through dark times and good.” Then, with a tiny laugh, she added, thinking of the relationship her elder siblings possessed, “And also through silly disagreements that hold no meaning.”

After she spoke, she opened the pocket-watch locket that hanging around her neck, and taking notice of the time, Phee stood up, her school bag in hand as she addressed her brother with warmth, “Come, Seb, join me for dinner. We can talk a bit more for I do very much miss your company and I loathe to part from it so soon.”

Seb held a lot of pride for the Gryffindor house, it would probably always be that way and he knew that almost everybody had pride in their houses. So he allowed it to stay unsaid that they both had pride in their houses. He knew that Luce still had some pride in the Slytherin house, but it had probably disappeared a little after she had graduated. And honestly, his sister, both the older and the younger, was wonderful in their own way.

With her reaction to his concern, he just laughed. "You know that I will always want for both you and Luce to be happy and healthy. As much as Luce and I might discuss, then behind it all we care about each other. It is our way of showing it." he said with a smile and looked at Phee. Him and Luce - it was complicated, but they were siblings and they would always look out for one another. But when there was no reason for them to worry, they tended to get on each other nerves.

He smiled as Phee asked if he would have dinner while talking with her. It was a bit unusual to eat at any other long table than the one of your house, but A: Phee was his sister, and B: he was head boy. "Okay then." he said and stood up and went to walk with her. It was nice to have talked with her, and he looked forward to the continued talk with her.
