Appearance: Jory has always been relatively tall, fit and well-built from hauling fish all day. When he was younger, he tended to look older than he was, but that plateaued around 18 or so. Now, he generally looks his age, give or take a couple of years. When he first got married to Elestren, they were the same height, but as they’ve both grown, he’s gained on her by about 2 inches at 5’9”(so,ething that he reminded her of quite frequently when he first discovered it). He is left handed and never bothered learn to write with his right hand as well because, quite frankly, he didn’t write enough as a child for all that many people to correct him. His clothing is not the Fanciest or most fashionable that’s ever been and it often smells like fish and alcohol, but he likes to think that he wears it well.
History:
1861- Giorgios Georgatos is born to a newlywed couple, Gervasios and Aspasia Georgatos, on the island of Zakynthos in Greece. He is their first child and is strong and hearty from day one.
1863- 1870- As soon as he is old enough to hold a net or a rod, Gervasios takes his son out to fish with him. It is on one of these trips in 1867 when he shows his first sign of magic stopping a fish in midair as it attempts to flop off of the deck of their boat.
1872- Aspasia gives birth to a little sister for Giorgios. He is quite pleased to have a sibling, but honestly, is a bit disappointed that it isn’t a brother.
1873- In the fall, Georgios begins school, but before year’s end, his father, for whom work has become more scare as he has gotten older and competes with younger men, decided to move the family, including his pregnant wife, to Wales where he imagines there might be less competition, but enough industry to sustain them. Because he is already twelve and had started at another wizarding school, Georgios is not able to attend Hogwarts. Instead, he finds work alongside his father on fishing boats.
1874- In January, after only two months in the country, Gervasios, gets up to go to work early one morning and immediately keels over from a heart attack. He is dead within the hour. Two days later, Aspasia gives birth to another son, leaving Georgios with three mouths to feed on his own at the age of twelve. The pressure, combined with the trauma of his father’s death is hard for him to handle and, to cope, he begins going out to pubs with other fisherman and drinking rather heavily, aided by his older appearance (which leads them to believe he is closer to fifteen or sixteen than twelve). By his thirteenth birthday, his mother grows tired of scraping him up off the floor and into bed at night, sitting up and worrying about him and watching him drink their money away. She tells him not to come home until he can be a proper role model for his little brother and sister. He leaves that night and hasn’t seen any of his family since.
1875- Despite the amount of time that he spends with other fishermen, he is still on the borderline between childhood and adulthood and does spend some time hanging around with kids his age and younger (mostly other young fishermen), doing more age-appropriate, less alcohol-related things. One of the younger friends that he meets through the younger brother of another teenage fisherman is Arthyen Isble.
1876- One June night he unknowingly comes across Arthyen’s older sister, Elestren, in a bar. They get into a rather heated card game and, after x number of drinks, wake up next to each other in bed the next morning. He does the respectable thing and marries her right away without even asking her name. He is rather amused to find out after the wedding that she is, indeed, his friend Arthyen’s older sister, who he had seen at least once before, but hadn’t recognized after a few beers. She is considerably less amused to find out that he is two years her junior at the age of fourteen. Luckily, the family welcomes him into their fold (despite the whole drunken premarital fling and eloping thing) and gives him his current, more British-sounding name, Jory George (among other names like “The Greek one” and “Kid”). On top of that, they give him a wand, made by Hicca, as per family tradition, to replace his old one, which had been secondhand and not entirely compatible with him. Unfortunately, though, it doesn’t make him much better at spell casting. He continues to work as a fisherman, though he mostly works with the family now rather than searching out crews to join.
1877- Elestren gives birth to their first son in late October. Partially because he’s born just a week before Jory’s birthday and partially because the idea or two Jory Georges in the family is hilarious to them (particularly to Jory), they name him Jory George Jr. He spends weeks talking in the third person just to make it more confusing as to which Jory he’s talking about.
1879- They have another son, who they name Giagkos (since it doesn’t make sense for the Greek one in the family to have no sons with greek names). But, like Jory, they give him a nice, British nickname, Jago, to make it easier on everyone who has to pronounce his name.
1881- He and Elle have their first daughter, Andraste. He’s a little bit intimidated by having a daughter, but figures that Elle will know what to do with her when she has distinctly feminine issues.
1882- Jory Jr. shows his first sign of magic. Elestren celebrates by taking him to Hicca, to get his first wand. Jory celebrates by giving him his first tiny fraction of a glass of beer (as far as he knows. He wouldn’t put it past Cad to have given him some earlier). Little Jory is made to fervently swear not to tell his mother about it.
1883- Elle gives birth to a second daughter, Bersaba. Jory hopes that the next child will be a boy so that he, Jory Jr. and Jago aren’t outnumbered, but he doesn’t dare tell that to Elle (not while he’s sober, anyhow). This is also the year that his sister, Eumelia, starts Hogwarts thanks to the scholarship offered to all incoming first years in sufficient financial need. He thinks about from time to time, but doesn’t dwell on it (or even mention it to his wife) considering how many years it’s been since he’s even seen her.
1884- Elle tells him that she’s expecting again. Though never an overly religious man, Jory starts sending up quiet prayers for a boy.
Personality:
Jory is a responsible husband and father in the sense that he is a hard worker and doesn’t stray (unless you consider going out drinking with Cad and the other Vickery boys most days of the week straying). However, it wouldn’t be quite accurate to call him entirely mature. Compared to Cad and even Arethyen, he seems like a regular sage, but he still drinks too much and enjoys mildly annoying his wife with ridiculous nicknames far more than he should. He also gives his sons significantly too much exposure to alcohol. He can often be heard asking Jory Jr. to bring daddy “The hair of a dog” or other slightly off English phrases. That said, he is more involved than many Victorian fathers and spends a significant amount of his free time (when it’s too early to be drinking) teaching Jory Jr. and Jago to fish so that they can take after him some day. He will most likely teach his daughters too once they are old enough to learn. To the rest of his family and to others, he is an amiable, lighthearted and reliable sort of fellow. He’s also quite a good cards player and will always insist that he has won almost every game that he’s played including the one against Elestren on the night before their wedding even though he can’t remember it clearly enough to say for sure if they even finished the game.
