    The Customary Christmas SOS

Before I proceed, let me quickly assure you that I never once found your betrotha; funny, nor ever too any form of amusement from it- just so we are on the same page in regards to marital predicaments.

Mother has managed to out-do herself this year for gifts. It's even worse than Petra- frankly, I’d rather take on all the reanimated inhabitants of the bloody jurassic coast than have to deal with this gift.

She’s gone and given me my Grandmother’s engagement ring- you should have seen her face! Part of me is tempted to regift it to Javert so that Drommy may wear it and get Mother off my back, but somehow I doubt that would fly exceptionally well with her.
Hoping your Christmas is making you eye up the fourth floor window less than mine is,
    Orpheus

I see how it is now. It's not so funny when you're very close to something of the same now, hmm? I think your sister would appreciate the gesture, but I highly doubt your mother would. Does she have somebody specific in mind for you or is this just a casual prompt?

My Christmas was... far too social for my liking. We were heralded to Fort Lestrange for a large family gathering, my betrothed and her family included. It wasn't unpleasant, I suppose. Just exhausting. I will leave the window-jumping up to you for now (please don't).
    Chin up,

The mercies of a small family, I suppose. I vote next year we both get unavoidably detained with terribly important ministry business somewhere far flung, sunny, and beyond the interference of either of our parents. (It's a wonder the two are not together, frankly, given their shared love of persecuting their firstborns)

I’m very much afraid mother does have someone in mind- she’s invited her summer intern for brunch today. The girl must be a yearmate of your betrothed, or around her age. I’m starting to think Mother has taken leave of her senses- a girl who interns is hardly the sort who is going to want to wed at any sort of young age, not to mention that her family lack any sort of connections or fortune with which Mother may try to sway me!- and I highly doubt Mother has decided to try and match us on the grounds of something so considerate as having similar interests or dispositions either.
The carving knife is looking tempting,

I do hope my delay in response hasn't found you with slit wrists under the table. Though I would have heard about that by now, I think.

You are never to mention a union that unholy ever again. Ever.

Oh well then, your mother truly does not mess around. At least if this works out, our brides might be chummy? It does sound a little suspicious, frankly. And how did the little luncheon go, anyway?
    Stay away from knives,

And here I was thinking so many Lestranges in one place may have resulted in some mass murder from which no-one survived!

Indeed, the thought of our parents together would be enough to make hell look like a reprieve, I’m sure. Though I’m sure your Father wouldn’t take leave of his senses enough to try and set up a match with a halfblooded girl from a middle class family. I did survive brunch, narrowly, though I doubt Miss Carrow exactly keeps company with Miss Fisk. Besides, a girl who aspires to be like my Mother and who wishes to work is hardly bride-material!
    God help us both,
    Orpheus
