Dearest Kitty,

My darling, I am so sad to have to tell you that my father, your grandfather, has passed away. His death was swift and startling; one moment he was reading The Daily Prophet at breakfast, and the next he had left this world behind. I know this must come as quite a shock to you, but I urge you, my darling, to be very strong indeed.

The funeral is to be held on Thursday next. If you would like to attend, I shall arrange to have someone to fetch you from the castle, though I will not take offence if you feel like you cannot bear it.
