In Character
Full Name: Brian Pratt
Nicknames: I mean idk if Dr. Pratt counts as a nickname
Birthdate: January 5th, 1855
Current Age: 31
Occupation: Physician
Reputation: 5
Residence: Irvingly
Hogwarts House: unknown
Wand: muggle, yo
Blood Status: Muggle
Social Class: Middle Class
Family:
He is ambidextrous but favors his right hand for writing and his left for eating. For obvious reasons he dresses in well made muggle clothing and secretly thinks wizard robes look too much like nightclothes to be proper.
History:
1855| Brian is born and takes his place as the baby of the family.
1862| Shortly after his education is passed on from a governess to a tutor a strange woman comes to tell them that Kendra is different. He is young enough to be both excited and frightened by the prospect of real magic. He tells his mother he hopes a woman will come to tell him he’s different too but the look on her face was enough to keep him from ever saying it out loud again.
1866| No one came to tell him he was magic like Kendra so instead of Hogwarts he went off the The Junior School at The University of London. There he studied an exhaustive list of subjects including reading, writing, Latin, French, German, history, geography, arithmetic and bookkeeping, mathematics, natural philosophy, drawing, and dancing. Hooray for run-on sentences! He is passable in most areas but takes drawing like a natural.
1869| Kendra comes home and Brian watches as she’s forced to hide away and stifle her magical side and it makes him angry in away he can’t fully explain. When he’s not at school he takes to spending time in her green room with her, sketchbook in hand.
1870| Armed with the confidence of prestigious education and all the foolhardiness of a 15 year old boy he broached the subject of Kendra’s confinement with his father. His argument relied heavily on the idea that if they’d paid for seven years of magical education it made little sense to then cut her off from it. The argument did not end in his favor to say the least.
1871| At sixteen he ages out of the Junior School and begins studies at the University of London proper where he pursues his Bachelors in Medicine. Whether he was naturally interested in medicine or his parent’s planted the idea, the prestige of being a physician is a strong draw for him.
1872| Kendra marries and Brian is torn between slight hero-worship because of the man’s position as a physician and being distinctly uncomfortable with his sister being married to someone she has to lie to.
1875| It is very convenient to have a physician in the family when one is trying to become a physician. Brian begins an apprenticeship of sorts with Preston, Kendra’s husband,
1877| … which ends very abruptly when divorce happens. After such abominable behavior towards his sister the decision to cut all ties with the man is an easy one. Brian obtains his license on his own a year later.
1879| After a year of trying to establish a steady practice Brian finds himself in the employ of a very wealthy family. He quickly grows very accustomed to the perks that come with it. There is very little actual work to be done because it is considered a gentleman’s profession and there is a strong emphasis on not actually touching the patient. The motto of Physician’s seemed to be ‘once you touch the patient you become a surgeon’, which didn't seem like such a bad thing when he was in school since surgeons got to do all the fun things but as an adult surgeon had somehow become a dirty word.
1881| Kendra gives birth to a son and Brian is absolutely delighted when she gives the child his name.
1882| Spending his days listening to symptoms as slight as a scratchy throat and prescribing things as mundane as milk, he spends more and more of his free time sketching. He takes up redrawing the pictures found in medical texts but is soon frustrated by their lack of detail. Unwilling to go the traditional route of digging up corpses for study he seeks out a surgeon who allows him ‘observe’ the more manual practices of medicine under the guise of producing better medical illustrations. His ‘observation’ becomes so extensive that he is functionally a hands-off apprentice.
1885| A young woman comes to stay with the family he works for, a distant relative written off as ‘troubled’ by her parents. The change of scenery and his prescriptions see her much improved but after several weeks he diagnoses her with a mild case of hysteria. There was a simple and effective cure for hysteria but it was not one he could send her to the apothecary for. It was decidedly more hands on and despite all the social pressures that told him he was above providing such treatments himself his curiosity got the better of him.
Fortunately Brian was very good at said treatment and the girl was cured. Unfortunately she also took to giggling and blushing whenever he was around. His patron grew increasingly suspicious of him and after a few months of this behavior from the girl Brian’s weekly wage stopped arriving. As a gentleman in a gentleman’s profession he was not paid directly. The sum was normally wrapped and left in a designated spot for him to retrieve so when it was no longer left for him it was not something he could address directly. Eventually it became clear he was being pinched out and he was forced to leave. For the sake of reputation he claimed the polluted air of London had aggravated his asthma which he’d never had before and was relocating to cleaner pastures.
1886| Brian begins his new practice as Physician at an infirmary in a curious little town where magic people and people like him live together. It is decidedly more rural than what he is accustomed to and he lacks the perks that came with treating almost exclusively Upper Class. As the infirmary does not have it’s own surgeon he suspects he will have to do that as well, which excites him more than he expected it to.
Personality: Painfully adorable, A giant nerd, A little bit full of himself, avoids getting his hands dirty if he can help it unless it's ink or pencil lead, has a conservatively adventurous spirit, is distantly curious about magic in the same way one is distantly interested in one's in-laws. Probably a push-over to some degree.
