Appearance:

Hiram stands at an unremarkable five feet, seven inches with a sturdy build developed through years of hard work. With his mother’s brown hair and his father’s grey eyes, he blends fairly easily into a crowd. He favors simple muggle attire most of the time, finding it the most practical to work in. Though he seldom does anything with it, he does carry his wand in a hilt worn on his belt; the other side bears a mid-sized knife for cutting back shrubbery and the like. The most notable thing about Hiram you will see only if he opens his mouth—his tongue is missing, vanished entirely as if it were never there. He’s left-handed.

History:

1856 | Hiram is the first—and only—child born to Simeon, an auror, and Margery, who works at her father’s bakery.

1859 | Simeon dies tragically on the job. Margery and Hiram move in with her parents.

1862 | Hiram’s first act of magic sees him rejuvenate a wilted flower on the dining table.

1863 | Just after the new year, Margery remarries to Almon Birch, a Ministry worker. She and Hiram, quite naturally, move in with him.

1864 | Margery delivers twins Orpha and Ottilie, Hiram’s first half-siblings. At eight years old, he was already uncertain about sharing his mother with his new stepfather, and he is even less keen on sharing her with two mewling babies.

1868 | Hiram leaves for Hogwarts, where he is sorted into Hufflepuff.

1869 | Solomon is born.

1870 | Hiram adds Care of Magical Creatures to his course roster.

1871 | Hudson is born.

1873 | Hiram sits his OWLs and does well enough, with an O in Herbology and passing grades in all his other subjects, bar History and Potions. With no need for further education, he leaves school and finds work as a gardener on a magical estate not far from London—his grandfather was acquainted with the cook, who recommended him.

1874 | Zadie is born.

1877 | Hiram’s mother, stepfather, and half-siblings move to Hogsmeade.

1878 | Hiram witnesses his employer’s daughter literally rolling in the hay with a groom and considers it his duty to inform her father. Rather than thanking Hiram for informing him of this transgression, the man immediately takes Hiram to be blackmailing him, and has his tongue removed so he cannot tell anyone and locks him in a storeroom for a week for good measure. He is shaken when finally discovered by the butler, and when he leaves the house he does not go back.

1880 | Missing gardening and unfulfilled working at the bakery, Hiram finds work at The Florist Potts tending to their plants, tidying up around the shop, and providing general maintenance as required. It’s a simpler job than his last, but he’s relatively certain none of the Pottses will maim him, so that’s a bonus.

1884 | Plague hits Hogsmeade and claims the life of Hiram’s mother and grandmother, leaving him technically an orphan.

1885 | An explosion at the Ministry of Magic claims the life of many—and Almon is among their number. Zadie begins acting out after her father’s passing, and is eventually sent to live with Francis in London as he has the time—and an overabundance of patience—to deal with her.

1886 | After working at the bakery for some time, Orpha moves out to live above it, determined to take on a bigger role in the managerial side of things.

NOTE—

Hiram is mute. He communicates face-to-face with very simplistic gestures and occasional stick drawings with his wand. He has not been able to willfully perform magic in several years, though was able to stun a mugger in a moment of desperation, so he has hope he might again someday.
