WE ARE NEVER WHAT WE INTEND OR INVENT
Burrowing her head underneath her thick down covers, Magnolia made a half hearted attempt to block out the early morning sunlight streaming in through her windows. Finally forsaking any possibility of sleep, she opened her eyes slowly, stretching as she released her covers. Lying there for a moment, Magnolia looked around her room, her room, still unable to comprehend the luxury of a white washed room after all these years. Having grown up in the slums, her childhood was spent in dirt floored shacks that were often flooded by water from the black lake. Here, the floor was made of wood, and although it was a small room it was light and bright. Letting a small smile play across her lips, Magnolia finally sat up, swinging her pale alabaster legs over the edge of her bed.

Glancing towards the calendar, which was hanging on the wall opposite of her bed, she noted with a fair amount of apprehension that she had yet another interview today, for yet another Governess position. Really, she had not imagined that she would be in such a position after graduating from a school like Hogwarts. And it wasn't even that, she had gotten straight O's on both her OWLS and NEWTS. She was intelligent, and fantastic at learning. All her Professors had said so. Yet it turned out that without the appropriate connections, she would be stuck in Hogsmeade for the rest of her life. Her classmates, the ones that had gotten much lower marks than her had all gone on to bigger and better things. The boys had gotten positions at places such as the Ministry, or St. Mungos. And the girls, well they were all about to have a fabulous Debutante season. Something that Magnolia would never experience.

Sighing, she padded over to the foot of her bed and began looking through her trunk for an appropriate dress. Settling on a pale green confection that previously belonged to her mother, she lay it down on her bed, smoothing out the creases. With tiny little white buttons marching up the front of the bodice, the collar, sleeves, and bottom of the dress were decorated with frothy white lace. The back was gathered in a bustle as the latest fashion dictated, and with her black boots and white parasol, it would be perfect for where she was intending on going. Dressing herself slowly, Magnolia eventually finished buttoning up the last button on her dress and turned around slowly. Yes, it still fit thank Merlin. Picking up her wand, she muttered an incantation or two underneath her breath, watching as her long untameable red hair was was swept up in a loose chignon, leaving a few loose ringlets to surround her face.

Done, the young lady tucked her wand up her sleeve before selecting her white lace parasol from her wardrobe. Exiting the room and moving down the small and narrow hall, Magnolia peeked into her mother's room and saw that the bed was already empty. Perhaps she was already out and about? It was a lovely day after all. Checking the kitchen, and then the tiny front parlour, Magnolia saw nothing. Well, there was nothing to worry about really, she was likely see her mother around supper time. Heading back into the pantry, the young girl sliced off a piece of bread and found a piece of cheese in the ice box. Eating quickly, she checked her little watch and saw that she had about half an hour before her interview. Just enough time to walk there if she cut through the park. Humming to herself as she locked up the house behind her, she opened up her parasol on the stoop of her house before she began walking.

Who knew a girl from the slums would be able to achieve what she had achieved so far?
