    Silence is Golden [NEWT Charms]
    #1
A large part of the NEWT-level curriculum for Charms class was non-verbal spells. While non-verbal magic was not necessarily essential to a life in the magical community, it surely made things much easier in the long-run. For students who chose to become aurors or hit-wizards, it was necessary to know such a thing; it would be difficult to out-smart a criminal if they could hear every move that was being made! For the ladies, non-verbal spells would simply make their household charms and the like easier.

The students had hurried in, as they should after two years of having him as a professor. He held his hands up to silence the murmuring that was bouncing off the classroom walls, and then he turned his attention to the chalkboard. In large, crooked letters, the words "NON-VERBAL SPELLS" was written across it.

"Today we'll be practicing the non-verbal spells I've had you studying over the past few weeks," he declared. "You will be practicing spells you learned during your first two years at Hogwarts — namely, lumos, wingardium leviosa, and avifors. Choose your spell wisely, for not all are of equal difficulty."

And with that, the lesson began.

Fill out this form and I'll roll to see if your character is successful!

Handsome was decent enough at Charms, he thought. He'd received an 'O' on his NEWTs, but he still didn't consider himself as skilled in Charms as he thought himself in Defence Against the Darks Arts. Nevertheless, he would attempt non-verbal magic — something that would undoubtedly help him in all classes. Channeling his magic through his wand, he silently cast his spell.

    Skill: Poor
    Spell Chosen: Lumos

Leandra was not the biggest fan of performing practical magic in front of the class for all that she could usually do it while on her own. She nervously held out her own wand, eyeing the other students as they made their attempts (and seemingly without much difficulty), and tried to silently cast her chosen spell.

Non-verbal magic wasn't of particular interest to Ivory. It was useful, certainly, but she preferred to focus her attention on cultivating skills that were more relevant to her ambitions. Still, she'd always been a hard working student and wouldn't let her efforts lapse now. Pressing her lips together, Ivory attempted to cast the spell she'd chosen.

None of the students thus far were capable of producing the spell perfectly, but he could see Mr. Whitledge's wand tip turn white, while the object of Miss Kamaria's spell slightly shifted in form at her apparent spell-casting. He clapped his hands once. "Keep trying! I don't expect you all to get it on the first try!" he said encouragingly, watching his students with eager eyes.

    Spell Chosen: lumos

Charms had been Cee's favourite class since first year. The professor back then had been Violet Ollivander (Mrs. MacFusty now). She'd been kind and helpful and made a good impression on Cee and that had inspired her to love the subject.

Cee felt that if the professor was still Violet Ollivander-MacFusty, she'd have an even better understanding of the subject. Non-verbal magic wasn't a strictly Charms item, either. They simply focused on it more in this class, because the nature of the spells they cast was easier.

Cecily had the tendency to underestimate herself and her abilities, so she went with Lumos. It was such a natural spell that she'd probably cast it, nonverbally, sometime in the past, when she'd woken up in the middle of the night looking for the chamber pot.

James was actually pretty good at Charms. In fact, he had gotten an O on his owl exams. Even so, he didn't feel like doing the harder spell but he didn't want to take the simple way out. And so, he went for the middle ground.

Ignatius did well enough with Charms but it wasn't one of his best subjects. Even so, he liked to challenge himself so he decided to practice with the hardest spell that they had been given to work with.

Leandra frowned as she failed to make even a sign of success and once again readied her wand. With her eyes squeezed shut, she attempted the wand movement and tried to envision the effects of the spell in her head while thinking of the incantation.

Handsome would try once more, but not before letting up a frustrated huff. He hated it when he couldn't perform magic correctly, as he could just envision what the effects were supposed to look like in his head. He raised his wand and silently thought of the spell he was trying to accomplish.

Edgar clapped his hands together as Miss Gallivan proved to be the first to successfully cast the spell she'd intended.

"Very good, Miss Gallivan! Take five points for Ravenclaw for being the first to successfully cast non-verbally!" he exclaimed. He motioned with his hands for the other students to keep trying; they wouldn't be leaving until more of them came out successful.

Oh wow. Cee smiled when her wand tip emitted light. That being said, she wasn't wildly impressed by her accomplishment. She'd only cast lumos. Besides, as a seventh year, it meant that she'd gotten some practice on non-verbal magic starting from her previous year.

She'd try the next spell, Wingardium Leviosa. Slow and steady won the race.

She pointed at a piece of parchment and thought of the spell. She tried to envision a force, if you will, below the parchment, that would lift it upward.

Despite her disinterest in the topic, Ivory was still a bit miffed that she wasn't immediately successful at non-verbal casting. Though she hadn't done perfectly like she'd wanted, she wasn't discouraged and attempted the same spell again, focusing even harder this time.

Munny decided to go with the levitation spell to practice his non-verbal casting. Holding his wand in his hand, he concentrated on the spell.

Practical test on Charms class has always been easier for the ravenclaw than Defence of the Dark Arts or Transfiguration so she was confident that she could at least do this. She had chosen Wingardium Leviosa, it was more challenging to do than Lumos but it wasn’t too difficult that she would have a hard time like Avifors. With a deep breath, she concentrated on silently casting the spell.
