    Kayline Prewett vs. Petra Sleptova

    Moderating dueling was the highlight of his summer. He assumed this meant that he needed to find another hobby to occupy his time, but he could worry about that later. He reviewed the rules with the duelists before stating, "Miss Prewett is set to begin the first round." Then, he stepped back to allow the girls to take their places.

    In the end it was the frustration with having a betrothed so very awkward and uncommitted as Cassius Lestrange that had lead Kayline to participate in the duels. Certainly he had been very, very sorry about forgetting her name — but even several months later Kay felt like that was important.

    Still, that was neither here nor there. Right now she needed to focus on her duel. Not that it was really a duel, which made Kayline's penchant for offensive magic rather useless.

    At least she could have something to work on. Kayline raised her wand with a sigh and dropped a mirror on the ground. The mirror broke and with a few words Kayline charmed the shattered pieces to swirl around her. It looked pretty, reflecting the light, but Kayline knew this because each of those pieces was sharp and could be used to slash at someone.

    It was her second time in the dueling tournament and this time she felt more confident. The last duel of the last tournament she had entered had been rather traumatizing at the time but she had only been a second year back then, now she was due to go into her fourth year and she was better equipped. Surely better equipped by Miss Prewett who was a year younger than her.

    Taking her aim, she decided to work on what Miss Prewett had provided and attempted a shrinking charm to make the shards of glass smaller.

    James thought it terrible luck to break a mirror on purpose. He hoped Miss Prewett was aware of the superstition. The shards of glass looked terribly sharp - he hoped she didn't plan to do anything ungainly with them. Luckily, Miss Sleptova made them look a bit less intimidating by shrinking them. "The first point will go to Miss Sleptova, who will also begin the second round."

    She was off to a good start! Pet pursed her lips in concentration as she planned her next move.

    Spotting a moth trying to escape from the room and running into the window repeatedly, she aimed her wand at it, prayed her aim wouldn't fail her and muttered the incantation that would hopefully make it turn into a shiny moth-sized pebble.

    Kayline was not particularly pleased that she had lost the first round, but she had never done this before. Shrinking the shards of mirror had been clever, though — far more clever than turning a moth into a pebble.

    Determined to show up Miss Sleptova, Kayline raised her wand and recited a spell to turn a pile of gravel off the ground into butterflies.

    While Miss Prewett's attempt would have been wonderful if she'd managed it successfully, the spell had brought about half formed butterflies that flopped sadly about on the ground. Miss Sleptova's, while a bit more simple, had been successful. "The point and the duel will go to Miss Sleptova. Well done!"

    Petra = 10, Kayline = 7
