Appearance:

Matthew has always been shorter than his friend and currently stands at five feet ten. As a child, he had red hair, which darkened with time and is currently more of an auburn colour. His eyes are blue, his nose is straight and his lips are small. He dresses like a normal person and uses his right hand.

History:

October 13th, 1844 | The second child Rachel McGonagall gives to her husband is a boy who they name Matthew, after his maternal grandfather who died recently. Their closeness in age ensures that Matthew quickly grows close to his sister Marian, despite their different genders.

December 22nd, 1847 | Another girl joins the family, Margery. While Matthew would always be fond and somewhat protective of his baby sister, the two were never quite as close as he was with Marian.

1848 | Rachel and Douglas have another son, Murphy. Matthew instantly takes to being an older brother, but Marian still remains his closest sibling.

December, 1852 | A week before Christmas, Rachel takes Matthew with her in town in order to do the shopping for the season. When she slips on the icy pavement, Matthew displays his first sign of magic by making the bags she was holding levitate, preventing for the products inside to break. They are seen by an old muggle lady, but the matter is quickly resolved as his father as an obliviator and it was not magic Matthew could control anyway.

September, 1853 | Marian leaves for Hogwarts, where she is sorted into Ravenclaw.

September, 1856 | Matthew joins Marian in Ravenclaw. He is a bit of the awkward, quiet nerdy kid, so he is surprised when he befriends Balthazar Urquart.

September, 1859 | Margery joins her brother and sister at Hogwarts, though she is sorted into Hufflepuff.

September, 1860 | In their fifth year, Balthazar is named prefect, a position Matthew thought that his friend deserved the most from their yearmates. Matthew himself is elected the president of the Charms club, to which he was a very active member.

July, 1861 | Matthew completes his fifth year with more than decent OWL scores.

June, 1863 | Matthew graduates from Hogwarts. Balthazar’s connections secure him a position in the Department of Mysteries. Matthew’s own father offers to secure him a position as an Obliviator, but Matthew wants to do his own thing, so he begins working at the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes.

June, 1864 | Disapproving their mother’s paranoid fear that she might end up a spinster, Marian gets married shortly after her twenty-second birthday.

November, 1866 | After a successful first season, the sweet Margery gets married in a small ceremony between family and friends.

1868 | Wanting a better future for himself, Balthazar moves to America. Matthew is sadened to see his friend go, but he supports his decision and writes to him regularly.

1869 | Matthew learns of a woman Balthazar meets, Mary Adams. She is hardly what his parents would approve of, but Matthew supports them nonetheless, as a good friend should.

January, 1871 | At some New Year festivities, Matthew is quite taken with Balthazar’s sister, Evelyn. He would have never thought of her romantically, but he cannot help himself.

June, 1871 | Balthazar and Mary welcome their first child, a girl they name Delight.

February, 1872 | Balthazar returns to England with the girls and reclaims his position as an Unspeakable. His parents are not pleased with his choice of wife and he is disinherited, sending him, Mary and Delight to the middle class.

June, 1872 | Inspired by Balt and Mary, Matthew and Evelyn - who have been secretly corresponding for some time now - decide to screw everything and follow their hearts and elope. This is perhaps the most daring thing Matthew has ever done in his life but he regrets nothing.

January, 1873 | Balt and Mary finally get married in a small ceremony that only Matthew and Evelyn witness.

February 14th, 1873 | Matthew and Evelyn welcome a set of twins, Demelza and Timothy.

May 25th, 1873 | Balt and Mary also have twins, Topaz and Ruby.

1874 | After about a decade of working for the Department of Magical Accidents and Catastrophes, Matthew learns that there is a free spot in the Committee on Experimental Charms. Charms had always been something he was particularly talented at, so he applies for the position and is pleased when he is chosen.

1875 | Evelyn and Matthew have a third child, a boy they name Ethan. Mary also delivers a son, Sebastian.

1880 | A fourth child joins the family, Edward.

December, 1882 | Evelyn and Matthew move to the newly established town of Irvingly.

1883 | Evelyn and Mary are pregnant once again.

February, 1884 | Evelyn miscarries the child she was carrying. Matthew had been so occupied with his job, that he had failed to notice that his wife needed him. The loss of their fifth child deeply saddens both Evelyn and Matthew, who considers himself responsible for it. He is ashamed of even facing Balthazar, fearing that his good friend might blame him for not taking good enough care of his sister.

March, 1884 | After the previous Minister is murdered, Balt decides to start a campaign for Minister, a notion that Matthew deeply supports. He and Evelyn begin to warm up to each other again and he tries to spend more time with his family.

June, 1884 | Matthew is delighted when his friend is elected the Minister of Magic!

June 29th, 1884 | After the previous one dies, Matthew becomes Hogwarts' Charms professor.
