Appearance:

Iris has always been very slight, and stands presently at four feet, ten inches—the smallest of the Fincher girls—with little hope of further growth. She is relieved that her time away from society has allowed her not to fuss too much with her appearance—Iris took to wearing exclusively wizarding robes whilst in the countryside to avoid the corsets necessary to give her any suggestion of curves, though her newfound status as a Pendergast Rose will require this to change. Her hair (always pin-straight is a pale shade of blonde, and grey eyes (not nearly so lovely as Zinnia’s blue!) are set against a rounded, child-like face in spite of her seventeen years. Iris is right-handed.

History:

1867 | The summer sees Iris born the fourth child to Gilbert and Gardenia Fincher, though one sibling—a brother—dies four years before her birth, and her eldest sister leaves for Hogwarts (a Hufflepuff) shortly thereafter.

1869 | Iris’ first younger sister, Begonia, is born, though at about two she is hardly in any condition to remember it.

1870 | Gardenia dies due to childbirth complications, and the child—a boy—is stillborn anyways. To this day, Iris’ only firm memory of her mother is the floral perfume she wore.

1872 | Iris’ first act of magic sees her bring a sketch of a small tree in one of her storybooks to life, right off of the page. She is immensely pleased with herself. Amaryllis leaves school and makes her debut after her fifth year, having no ambition towards employment.

1873 | Papa remarries to Miss Hortensia -----. At first, Iris is thrilled by the prospect of a “new mother”, but her stepmother quickly proves to have no interest whatsoever in the existing Fincher children. Amaryllis marries in the fall.

1874 | Amaryllis delivers her first child, called Esther.

1875 | Amaryllis marries in the spring. Iris gets her first living brother in the form of baby Norton. Though she was very excited by the prospect, Hortensia ensures that Iris and her sisters do not see the babe for the better part of a month. Instead of going to Hogwarts in the fall as Amaryllis had, Zinnia (along with Iris and Begonia) is packed up and sent to the family’s country estate. Papa insists that it’s just because Zinnia has had a cold and he wants her to be well for school…but then she still never goes. An elderly governess is employed to see to the girls’ education.

1877 | Amaryllis comes to stay for a whole month with Esther and the eight-month-old Gardenia in tow.

1878 | Papa says that Iris won’t be going to Hogwarts because it wouldn’t be fair for her to go but not Zinnia. To make it up to them, both girls are gifted a wand this year for Christmas.

1879 | Elias is born. By now, Iris knows better than to have an interest in any of Hortensia’s ‘possessions’—including her own father. Amaryllis has a little boy of her own, called Elijah.

1880 | No one is surprised when Begonia doesn’t depart for Hogwarts in the fall, nor when she gets a wand that Christmas, as seems to be the new pattern of things.

1881 | A particularly nasty storm sees a tree fall into the garden. Iris is decidedly very glad that she had the sense to stay indoors.

1884 | A plague strikes Britain. While their general seclusion keeps Iris, Zinnia, and --- almost entirely safe from contagion, her father sends word that Amaryllis and the Vails have not been so lucky: by summer’s end, only little Esther remains, now off to live with her paternal grandparents.
