Kavi tends to side with her mother over her father, but does get along with him when she makes an effort.

Jayashri Singh | Mother

Though it can be a bit - stressful - to have your mother as the Deputy Headmistress of your school, Kavi admires her mother nonetheless, and generally does quite well in her class.

Kavi also has several aunts and cousins on her mother’s side, and one aunt and an uncle and cousin on her father’s.
Languages: Kavi is fluent in Hindi and Punjabi. She has some basic English skills that she picked up when she had a crush on a white boy (not that she’ll ever admit that; he ended up being terribly annoying and Kavita dropped that like a hot potato!) but frequently pretends not to understand when it suits her. That is frequent, because #fuckyoucolonialists.
Appearance: Kavi stands at 5'2" tall. She has brown skin and dark hair and eyes. Though her features lack much of the sharpness of her mother, she does have eyebrows that make her feelings obvious, especially if she's angry. She wears bright colors and is right-handed.
History: 1867: Kavi is born, the first (and, as it proves, only) child of Naveen and Jayashri Singh. She is a quiet and generally well-behaved child.
1870: Kavi shows magic when she enchants the carpet in the Singhs’ entry hallway to float a foot off the ground, having gotten it in her head that she should have a magic carpet because three year olds are stupid.
1872: Kavita has a briefly-held and fervent desire for a sibling. This ends distinctly when she gets into a fight with one of her cousins that culminates with them throwing mud at one another.
1878: Kavi goes to Mandira! She takes classes exclusively in Hindi, but finds herself slightly jealous of the bilingual students.
1879: The fall of her second year, Kavi has a briefly-held crush on a white boy in the year above her, and tries to learn some English in the library accordingly. She catches on enough to understand some disparaging comments he makes - implying that the Indian Minister of Magic should be a white man - and her affection fades swiftly. Aunt Radha dies in labor.
1880: Kavi begins lessons in Healing Magic & the Humanities and absolutely loves it. Her anti-colonialist views solidify as she begins to gain real critical thinking skills. Also, her mother becomes Mandira's Deputy Headmistress.
1881: Kavita decides that she wants to be a Herbologist or use her HM & H skills professionally! She has never had issue with the familial inclination towards Herbology, and in fact enjoys it quite a bit.
1882: Aunt Lalita - and seven of her children - die of cholera. Kavita is shocked, and cannot even begin to imagine what her cousins are feeling!
1884: Kavi begins her seventh year at school. Even better, she is chosen as one of Mandira’s champions for the Pan-Magical Games - though a bit nervous of the strong language barriers she’s going to encounter, Kavi is sure she’ll do well in the actual competitions! And acquires an English phrasebook for the last bit, even if she’s sure she’ll still use her ‘go away’ method for the especially annoying English.
Personality: Kavi is stubborn and bold, with a sharp tongue - though she does stop at the boundary of crassness. She is openly anti-colonialist. Patient, especially with those younger than herself. Holds herself to very high standards - as the only child of Mandira’s Deputy Headmistress, Kavi has always wanted to prove herself a success in her own right. She has a bit of an aspiration to become a Herbologist.
