"Are you always this forward?" He asked teasingly since it would be a very short thread if he just ignored her entirely. — Tobin Cartwright in Take A Peek
Did you know? Churchgoers and worshippers had to endure a foul stench during prayers due to the amount of bodies often stored within the vaults of churches and chapels.
"Good morning, all!" Asa greeted cheerfully, bypassing the blackboard and perching on the edge of his desk instead. This lesson would be more of a discussion than a lecture, and Asa was rather looking forward to it. He was determined to make the most of the time they had left before a brand new sea of faces sat before him instead of those he had become so fond of. "I would like to believe you have all learnt a great deal about magic in the months that I have known you, but let's put that to the test, shall we?"
This was going to be tremendous fun.
"I want you all to invent a spell. Something practical. Something clever. And, most importantly, something feasible—theoretically, of course—using all that you have learned about the fundamental laws of magic." He grinned. "There will, of course, be extra house points on offer for those of you that think of particularly creative names for your spells!"
Magical Theory was probably one of the courses Guppy enjoyed more—at least, as far as theory was concerned—strictly because of the fundamental laws the professor had mentioned. It was a puzzle, therefore, rather than boring facts (ew, history), something he could one day conquer. That was something that appealed to the Gryffindor.
Plus now it was basically a game. That was definitely an added bonus.
“We don’t have to successfully cast it, do we?” the first year asked dubiously. Even most adults couldn’t just invent spells out of thin air, but if there were house points on the table, the competitive lad wanted to make sure he got it right.
Simon had mixed feelings about their magical theory class. On the one hand, he enjoyed Professor Keene. He'd proven an enjoyable sort - well, as enjoyable as he could be with such a boring subject to teach. Which brought around the fact that the only sort of classes that Simon thrived in were the more hands-on ones. He was great at potions and flying lessons, but terrible in any class that required an essay. He'd even been forced to have a tutor.
The idea of making up their own spells was one that Simon immediately jumped on. Now this would be fun!
He scoffed at Guppy's question, his mind already whirling with ideas, "Don't be a ninny! I'm going to cast mine."
“While I appreciate your enthusiasm, Mr. Quirke,” Asa interjected, sparing the slightest of frowns for the use of the word ninny (he ought to have a chat with the Gryffindor later), “this is Magical Theory, so we will not be casting. But I am eager to hear your ideas!”
Dora thought Magical Theory was rather boring most of the time. She didn't care how things worked, only that they did, and only worried about the why's when she had trouble. Though she thought Professor Keene was all right--she just wished he taught something more interesting.
Raising her hand, Dora asked, "Professor, does the spell have to be something we could cast, even if we won't be doing that? Could it be more complex?" She had no actual ideas yet, but she wanted to know what the limit was anyway.
Guppy stuck his tongue out at his housemate. Of course they weren’t casting them, the boy thought, decidedly ignoring the fact that he was the one to have asked in the first place.
Simon's grin quickly turned into a frown - and then when he caught sight of Travers' tongue - a scowl. He had been so intent on coming up with an epic spell of his own that he hadn't even realized that Miss Grant had asked a question. He spoke up rather loudly right over her, "I want to make a spell that does my homework for me!"
So they had to invent a spell but they couldn't actually cast it? What was the point in that? More importantly, where was the fun? Spryly thought theory was dull and just wanted to get straight to the action. He looked forward to not having to take magical theory next year.
He liked the sound of Quirke's spell idea, but obviously he couldn't copy him. What possible spell could he invent that didn't already exist? Magic was still new to him compared to other students who had been raised by at least one magical parent, all spells seemed amazing and his imagination surely paled before them. Spryly scratched his head and twirled his wand as he thought.

"That's the spirit, Mr. Quirke," Asa clapped his hands together, grinning from ear to ear at the suggestion. Headmaster Black would disapprove of course, but what student had not wished for a similar spell at least once in their life? "A spell that does your homework for you. Now, how would that spell work?"
