It really was a wonder how the Backus family weren't all on the heftier side thanks to the delicious smells constantly wafting through the air of their bakery on High Street. Surely those smells would be what helped their business to do so well though as the smells surely reached the streets outside. Maggie, however, was apparently immune to the smells and never seemed to notice it. Whenever customers came inside raving about the delicious smells she was forced to simply nod and smile. Really, living above the bakery itself made a person grow rather accustom to it all.

When the front door opened and triggered the welcome bell, Maggie looked up from behind the display counter she was wiping down. She smiled, a somewhat genuine grin, at the gentleman entering the family shop as she tucked a stray strand of blonde hair behind her ear. She was oblivious to the smear of flour on her right cheek from having helped her father and brother earlier in the day. Mother would probably be rolling her eyes if she were there but she was out and about running errands for the shop, leaving Maggie to run the front alone.

"Afternoon," she greeted as the smell of the baking dinner loaves rushed out into the streets.

While Will was certainly pleased with the path that his life had taken, he was still sad to be so far away from his family. Growing up in a house with six brothers, he associated the noise and the constant company with the comfort of home. And, even though all of his younger brothers were off at school now, he still made it a point to visit as often as his job permitted.

Walking down High Street, he was greeted with the familiar smell of fresh baked bread. Bringing a loaf or two to dinner was sure to put a smile on his mother's face, so he followed his nose straight into the cute little shop.

A bell chimed overhead as he crossed the threshold and he was greeted by the familiar blonde shop girl who he had only managed to catch glimpses of on his previous visits. "Afternoon," he smiled, dipping his head in a polite nod. The smell was even more heavenly on the inside of the shop than it was out on the street and he walked up to the display counter, sniffing appreciatively.

"I don't suppose you can tell me exactly which of your baked goods is emitting that intoxicating smell that is wafting out into the streets?" He asked, eyeing all of the various options behind the glass.

Maggie’s smile only widened some more as she saw the man sniffing the smells. He wasn’t the first and she was certain he wouldn’t be the last. She couldn’t help but to laugh at his question. She waved her hands in front of her to indicate the case full of sweets as well as the baskets full of fresh breads. ”Take your pick,” she said, ”Any combination of them could be what you’re smelling.”

She took a step back as she continued to smile at him. ”But right now, pa is in the back baking up the fresh loaves of bread for dinners,” she said with a nod. Fresh bread was definitely one of the better smelling items they sold in the bakery.
