Throw Caution to the Wind

So far, the first week and a few days of school had been going well and as such she had been walking around with a giant smile on her face, most likely making her seem like some kind of weird. Still, she didn't care. It was after school, the second Monday of class and having dropped her bags off at her room - abandoning her homework for later - she took off in search of one of her sisters, the eldest currently at school. As she really didn't want to try and puzzle her way through a riddle to see if her sister was in her dorm, she ducked out of the castle to check the greenhouses.

Slightly out of breath from running around and poking her head in each of the greenhouses, she slumped against the wall when she located Daffy, still grinning. "Daffy! Daffy!" Calla panted from the ground before pushing herself off the ground and moving closer to not only share her news but also to see what her sister was working on.

If there was one thing Daff could count on at school, it was that her plot in the school greenhouses needed her attention after the summer off and Daffy was more than happy to tend to her plants in the quiet of the greenhouse. It wasn't much different from home in that respect and something she would certainly miss upon her graduation in the spring.

She hummed to herself as she weeded and watered, her large cat, Beatrix snooping around, no doubt looking for Professor Skeeter's cat, Pepper. The pair were usually up to no good in the greenhouses, but Professor Skeeter had said once he thought it good for Pepper to make non-human friends and so Daff made the effort to bring her Maine coon with her wherever she could.

Standing to refill the watering can once more, she hear the sound of approaching feet, accompanied by the shouts of her sister. "Oh my goodness, what's all the fuss?" Daffy honestly hadn't been worried about Calla's arrival at school. Her youngest sister was so outgoing that she doubted Cal would have a hard time adjusting. Still, she had been trying to keep a distant eye without interfering or hovering too much.

It looked like she was doing general upkeeping things, nothing all that interested and she fell back against the table, all it to support her weight as she turned to face her sister with a from. "You know how I tried out for Quidditch? I made it! They posted the roster this morning. I made chaser! Only two other first years made it! I kinda can't believe I made it through - Sloane didn't and she grew up playing, but I've only been flying a few months." Her grin twisted into a worried frown. What if they only took her because they had no one else? 

"I'm a little surprised by how well everything seems to be going. Classes aren't that hard, even for me, though etiquette and I might have some issues,"she stated with her lips curling into a short-lived pout. "I like wearing robes to - a lot better than those annoying dresses. The castle is so big. The stairs move! I keep getting lost and finding new things! It really is amazing here, Daffy!"

A wide smile blossomed on Daffy's features when her sister spilled the news about quidditch. "Oh my, how exciting!" That was a first for the Potts girls! It was all coming out so fast, but Daff was practiced at keeping up with Calla's enthusiasm. She nodded along with her sister's story even as she turned her attention back to her flowers. "I do hope you're kind to your friend, I'm sure she's unhappy with that outcome." She made sure the pass Calla a little look.

"I'm glad to hear your enjoying it!" Truthfully Daff hadn't had any doubts about that, but the school could be a little overwhelming at first. "You'll find your way around, I'm sure. It just takes a little practice." Timing the staircases was a bit tricky, even for her. "How are you finding the classes themselves, interesting?"

All of her sisters were well practiced in keeping up with her, they had to be after eleven nearly twelve years of listening to her go on and on. "Why would I not be nice to her?" Calla questioned, coming up behind her sister in attempts to see what she was working on. She was too short to look over the other girl's shoulder so she resorted to standing beside her and leaning over to see the flowers. "It isn't like I am going to go around bragging to her. I know she wanted it." She wasn't cruel if that was what her sister was implying - surely she would not have been sorted into Hufflepuff if she couldn't play but at least that one trait. "And maybe they only would let a certain number of first years on each team. There were two other from Gryffindor first years on the team without her, though I wish she could have been one of them. Maybe we can practice together this year and she'll make it next year!"

"Most of the professors are okay with us being a little late if we tell them the stairs threw us off. They probably remember being first years themselves, though they aren't as lenient as they were the first few days. But the classes are so much fun so far!" she declared, propping her elbows on the plot, careful not to mess up her sister's flowers. "I like herbology and potions best so far, and well, flying to but I guess you don't count that. I like charms too but apparently, I'm too noisy when I cast. At least I do not have to worry about that for DADA, though one kid tried to set my robes on fire," she stated, pouting, as she uncrossed her arms to pull out a weed her sister seemed to have missed.

"Now now, relax." Daffy said airily as Calla seemed to think Daffy had been insinuating something. "I know you wouldn't intentionally be mean about it, but I know you can be... enthusiastic about things." She looked over her shoulder to find her sister trying to see her project so she moved over a bit. Calla was very lucky to have made the team and it was exciting, but she also should have realized that ti may have been just that- luck! Daff would never say that aloud to her though.

Nodding along as her sister moved into classes, she chuckled. "Glad to see everything is alright then, not that I was worried." Daffy had always thought her youngest sister would do well in school and it looked like it was going alright! "Oh I was never any good at Defense." She lamented, making more room for her sister if she planned on helping weed. Daff wouldn't say no to a little help there!

"Oh my goodness, I don't remember first year classes being so exciting. I assume you're alright?" Robes on fire! What a way to start the year!

Enthusiastic? She felt a little like she did when she was younger and the cook had scolded her for getting into the nights desert before they had even set down to supper. Younger due to the fact the cook had long since given up on keeping the energetic child out of the kitchens, even though Calla had stopped sneaking in as much as she got older. "Yes, Daffy," the first year droned, not liking being scolded, "I'll be careful." She wasn't going to make the girl feel bad but still, it wasn't like she could avoid the subject forever. She couldn't dance around broken glass by not telling her friend about practice or games or quidditch at all. That would only make things even more awkward.

"Oh, it wasn't supposed to be that exciting. Professor taught us shield charms in class that day. The second years were supposed to be using a body-bind spell for us to practice but one of them threw a temper tantrum and tried to lite another girl on fire. It was Miss Scrimgeour and Miss Lestrange if you know who those are. Anyways, I guess the guy I was partnered with thought it a good idea even after they were punished. I wasn't doing too well with the charm so I did not bother to try. I just ducked. I didn't want to be as roasted as the ham at Christmas," Calla explained with a chuckle, no longer pouting now that her mind was on other things.

"What are you doing in classes? I'm sure it is far more fun than shied charms."

Daffy was oblivious to her sister's tone; she hadn't been chastising her, just a gentle reminder that sometimes her enthusiasm was a bit much. However, as her sister began to get into detail about her lesson, Daff turned her full attention on her sister.

Well then.

She knew of Miss Scrimgeour, the first year had asked for a little extra help in herbology and since Daffy was pretty good at it, she had obliged to help, though Daff rather thought she didn't much need it. There weren't really any shortcuts in learning all of the material, though Daff had given the young Slytherin her best ideas on the matter. "Well, then." This was why she had never done all that well in Defense, tough it was exciting, she just didn't have the attention for it.

"What about your other classes, going alright?" She'd always wondered what Calla would find exciting about school, considering her youngest sister had waited so long to get there!
