Appearance: Gabriel is a tall and lanky lad of six foot three inches. His build is an odd mix of athleticism and agility; he is well-muscled, but his muscles are lean and long, not bulging and corded. His eyes are a deep, dark brown and almost always appear lit up, as if illuminated from behind by a candle. His dark hair is worn long and shaggy, although he tries his best to keep it neat and out of his face. In the past couple of years, he has become quite accustomed to keeping facial hair, which he also keeps reasonably trimmed.
He dresses quite well, for someone of his means. Having lived amongst the bigwigs his entire life, Gabriel did pick up some knowledge and knowhow in regards to fashion. However, having very little means to buy notable clothing, he is quite comfortable in whatever fits. He is also a firm believer that all clothes should be clean; it's not unnatural to him to have a clothesline strung across his bedroom with his various articles hanging to dry.
History: George Wyndham and his younger sister Adelaide were born in the lap of luxury with silver spoons in their mouths. Both of their parents came from pureblood, old money families, and while Adelaide was taught the measures of being a proper lady, George was being groomed to take over the role of Patriarch from the day he was born. Even as children they were subject to numerous parties and social events of the upper class. As they grew older, their parents taught them more and more about magic, wanting them to be well-versed by the time they arrived at Hogwarts. George took the direction very well and was extremely proficient in the art of magic from an early age. He entered school several years before his younger sister and was quickly sorted into the Ravenclaw house.
Adelaide never quite got the hang of magic. During the holidays and summer breaks, George would attempt to teach her, but nothing ever came of it. There were hushed words about the house that she might be a squib, but the Wyndham elders punished whoever spoke such a travesty. However, just after her tenth birthday, it was becoming increasingly clear that Adelaide had no magical ability whatsoever. Still her parents held out hope, but as age eleven came and went with no letter from Hogwarts they were forced to accept the truth, and both were absolutely horrified. How, how could this happen? It was unthinkable. It was a mistake. Adelaide was a mistake, and at the age of twelve, she had been disavowed from her family. However, having enough morals to not throw a child out on the streets, her parents instead had her moved into the servants' quarters, and she was treated as such. George had attempted to maintain a relationship with his sister, but was quickly reprimanded by both his parents: "We do not associate with filth." Never mind the fact that the filth was their daughter; she had betrayed them by not being able to do magic.
This arrangement lasted for several years, until Adelaide reached the age of sixteen and was given a choice: remain in the house as a servant, or leave. Not being able to bear the humiliation of having to serve her own family, Adelaide promptly left the house. After a few years of wandering aimless through the streets of Cambridge and working odd jobs at taverns or shops, Adelaide met a young dragonologist named Edward Deering, with whom she quickly became infatuated. Edward was traveling to Wales to research the Welsh Green Dragon and he invited Adelaide along as his assistant.
Just months after arriving in Cardiff, Adelaide discovered she was pregnant with Edward's child. Having withheld the fact that he was a married man, Edward quickly left Adelaide to her own devices. With no means to support a child, Adelaide returned to Cambridge in an effort to reconcile with her family, hoping her parents would take pity on their unborn grandchild. However, upon reaching Cambridge, she discovered that in her absence both her parents had died (of natural causes) and her brother, now head of the house, was married and expecting a child of his own. George spoke with Adelaide just long enough to tell her that he could not and would not help her. After leaving the estate for the second and final time, she took a job at The Leaky Cup Alehouse and lived in a small room attached to the back of the building.
In November of 1861, Adelaide gave birth to a bouncing baby boy, whom she named Gabriel Thomas Deering. Adelaide was very weak after the birth, and soon took pneumonia. She lived just long enough to convince the owner of the alehouse to take Gabriel to the Wyndham's, along with a letter explaining the circumstances. George's wife, Lillian, was against keeping the child; but after everything that had conspired between him and his sister, George felt obligated. After all, he had refused the child once. Even so, it would not do for a family of such high social standards to just announce the arrival of a child that was not theirs, so Gabriel was given to the servants to be raised among them and the house elves.
Not long after Gabriel arrived at the Wyndham House, Lillian gave birth to a girl: Violet. For the next several years, Gabriel and Violet were raised together, by the servants of the house. The only real difference was Gabriel had chores to do. Upon reaching the age of seven, however, a tutor was hired to teach Violet, while Gabriel's studies had come to an end. By then George and Lillian's second child had arrived: Cordelia, called Cora. Together, the three developed a sort of brother-sister relationship, despite him being a servant. When Violet and Cora were not being taught propriety and acting like ladies, they would spend their time with Gabe and teach him the things they had learned from their tutors about history and politics and English. While Lillian frowned on Gabe's involvement with the girls, George turned the other cheek; he even went as far as to allow Gabe to sit in on the girls' piano lessons, and by the age of 10 Gabriel had become quite proficient as a musician.
Gabriel and Violet were close enough in age to receive their Hogwarts letters at the same time. Violet, of course, had been packing for the trip for months before her eleventh birthday, but Gabriel had expected to continue his duties as a servant of the house as he did not have the money available to allocate to schooling. Unbeknownst to him, Violet had spoken to her father about Gabriel going to school. After weeks of discussion and internal debate, George decided to fund Gabriel's going to Hogwarts, on the condition that he would pass all his classes as well as all of his OWLs. One failing grade and he would return to the house. Gabriel could think of no way to express his gratitude to his uncle, except to try his hardest and achieve the best grades possible in all his classes.
It was soon after George had told Gabriel that he would be allowed to travel to Hogwarts, that one of the servants let it slip that Gabe was in fact his blood nephew. Gabe thought it was a joke, but inquired anyway and George was forced to come clean. Not wanting to reveal the full truth of what had happened, George claimed that Gabriel's mother had fallen into a considerable amount of debt to her parents and was working it off as a servant. Not being a very inquisitive child anyway, Gabe accepted the explanation that his mother's debt had fallen on his shoulders, which was why he, too, was a servant of the house.
Upon arriving at Hogwarts Violet was sorted into Ravenclaw, just like her father, while Gabriel instead when to the Gryffindor house (which caused George to wonder if this was the house that Adelaide would've belonged to). With Violet's assistance, Gabriel passed all of his OWLs, even receiving Outstanding in Charms and Defense Against the Dark Arts. Throughout his years at school, Gabe was well-liked by his peers and teachers, and even developed somewhat of a special bond with the headmaster. After graduation, Gabe and Violet returned to the Wyndham House, where she was thrown into the whirlwind of suitors and courtship, and he was thrown back into the kitchens. A year or so later, Gabe received an owl from Headmaster Black requesting him to apply for the position of caretaker as the previous had retired. After having given it some thought, Gabriel discussed the situation with George and was subsequently released from servitude.
So now Gabriel is working as the caretaker of Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and living in a small apartment within the castle. Given his youth, and appealing personality, he is still very well-liked by those involved with the school. Headmaster Black has recently fulfilled Gabriel's wish of having a piano in his housing quarters to accommodate his musical needs.
Personality: In its song, the Sorting Hat tells that those who dwell in Gryffindor are brave at heart. Gabriel is, of course, brave- though not to the extent of daring or boldness. He fits in much better with the second part of the Sorting Hat's claim: heart. Gabriel has, in short, heart; the aspect of love and the need to protect those whom he loves and holds dear is seared deep within his bones. With that being said, he is more apt to follow his heart than his head. Despite being raised as a servant, he has a very chivalrous and honorable nature. He is instilled with a great deal of honesty and loyalty, and can be a true friend. Gabriel is a very self-sacrificing person who is able to give freely without being concerned about any return or reward. He is also somewhat of an adventurer at heart, a trait he unknowingly inherited from his father. He is very adaptable and versatile, having a natural resourcefulness and enthusiasm that marks him as a progressive with a good mind and active imagination. Gabriel has qualities that will make him the finest and most concerned parent. This combined with the skills acquired from being a servant makes him one who's often deeply involved in domestic activities. He's also very, very clean, which is not quite the norm for one of lower class living.
