    Indira Singh
    #1
    In Character
    Full Name: Indira Mabel Singh
    Nicknames: --
    Birthdate: November 4th, 1859
    Current Age: Twenty-Four
    Occupation: Apothecary Employee/Abortionist
    Hogwarts House: Slytherin
Wand: Hawthorne, 12 inches, with a dragon heartstring core.
    Blood Status: Halfblood
    Social Class: Lower Class
    Family:
    • Elizabeth Thatcher [1829-1872] was twenty-eight when she went to India with the hopes of honing her skills. The youngest of seven children, with three brothers and three sisters, her parents were shocked but not devastated when she decided to become a healer, rather than pursue a husband. They were less accepting, however, when she returned home married to Indian potioneer Ankur Singh [1821-1882]. Disgusted that she would marry an Indian, and that she would marry without their consent, the Thatchers disowned their daughter. Though Elizabeth would speak cordially to her siblings from time to time, the family she acquired in India would be her close family until her death.
    Appearance:
    • Indira is of unremarkable stature, standing at five feet and three inches in height. Though scrawny as a child, she has filled out considerably; while not voluptuous, she has a woman’s figure. Her colouring is inherited by and large from her father, with dark skin and obsidian hair making her distinguishable in the crowd. Her facial features, however, are more delicate, inherited from her mother. Indira’s eyes are an ordinary hazel. She dresses comfortably within the constraints of her gender, though does not trouble herself with fashion. Indira is right-handed.
    History:
    • 1859 | Indira is born two weeks shy of her mother’s thirtieth birthday. It is a difficult delivery, and subsequent visits to the healers would inform the Singhs that Indira is to be their only child.

1864 | Indira’s first act of magic occurs when she cleans of the mess caused by knocking over her father’s cauldron. While for many parents this would be a sign to keep the young girl out of the workshop, Ankur encourages his daughter’s interest in potions.

1871 | Indira begins at Hogwarts, and is sorted into Slytherin after the Sorting Hat debates with itself a bit. While she is not incredibly apt at making friends, she does quickly bond with one girl, a miss _____ Flowersmith.

1873 | While treating an epidemic of scrofungulus in Surrey during the summer, Elizabeth takes ill herself. Unfortunately, it claims her life and costs the Singhs her income as well. Indira is distressed and becomes decidedly anti-social when she returns to school that September. Miss Flowersmith is forced to leave school for financial reasons, only adding to Indira’s lack of a social life.

1874 | Ankur does not have the successes he once did in marketing his potions, and the Singhs are forced to sell their home. Though never very popular socially, there is now no doubt that the family has fallen to the lower class. It is only a combination of her intelligent nature and her dedication to schoolwork over friendship that sees Indira remain at Hogwarts.

1876 | Indira sits for her OWLs.

1881 | When Ankur takes ill, Indira moves to Hogsmeade to be closer to him. Rather than change hospitals, she leaves her position as a healer to care for him, working part-time at the local Apothecary.

1882 | Indira is devastated when her father dies in March. His is a lonely, inexpensive funeral. Indira takes in a housemate in her father’s modest home to keep costs down—who turns out to be none other than Miss Flowersmith, who is now working in a dubious industry. Later in the year, her housemate brings a co-worker—a prostitute—home, knowing of Indira’s skill at potions and father’s career with them. ____ asks desperately for Indira to help the girl take care of her “problem”, as she would surely be abandoned by the brothel otherwise. Against her better judgment, Indira attempts the complicated potion, and while the prostitute spends a week in sheer agony and looks for some time as if she might not pull through, the would-be mother is eventually fine, her unborn child little more than a memory. Indira vows never to do it again, terrified of the stress that comes with it.

1883 | That lasts until ____ falls pregnant as well. Not wanting to leave her only friend out to dry, Indira grudgingly prepares the potion again. Though hardly a fun experience, this attempt seems less risky than the first. It begins to occur to Indira that she might be able to make use of this skill. Late in the year, she begins making the potions with some regularity, enjoying the extra stream of income they provide—though with strong pangs of guilt every time they are unsuccessful. She does it quietly, not wanting to get caught, but those who know what questions to ask are put in touch with her.
