Appearance:
If it wasn’t for her personality, Mary would be bordering on being unremarkable. Her hair is a straight dark-brown, nearly black and the same shade as her eyes, with completely average, classical features. Her skin is admirably pale and she stands at 5’2”, with some curves despite still being relatively thin. She prefers simple hairstyles but elegant clothes in deeper shades and colours. She does occasionally wear a women's rights sash or rosette, but this is normally only when on parade.
History:
1849- Mary is born the seventh surviving child to John and Alice Watts, muggle sheep farmers in rural Wales. Her father works as a livestock manager for the local landowner, for whom her 14 year old sister Betsan also works for as a scullery maid. Her mother gardens and spins to supplement their income and William, Harry and Jack managing their small flock of sheep on the common and the cows. Their cottage is a traditional white washed stone affair, with two rooms on the ground floor (the kitchen and John and Alice’s room) and one large room in the roof for the children. The only source of heat is the fireplace, with a latrine and water pump 200m down the lane.
1850- Alice gives birth to her ninth child, who is a month premature. Alice is petrified for her daughter as her last premature baby, Lucy, was stillborn in 1840.
1851- Her fears are confirmed and the newly christened Holly passes away after catching a fever. Five year old Alice-May and thirteen year old William also catch it, but survive.
1852- Rose is born, the first arrival the three-year old Mary can remember. She is significantly stronger than Holly. That summer the landowner announces he is buying the common, severely depleting the family’s income and food. They are forced to relocate to a slum in Bristol.
1853- A final child, Johnny, is born. Alice is rendered very weak afterwards, so Harry, Jack and Alice-May join their father and William in the mill. Betsan finds employment as a companion for a sickly young woman of around her same age, who she helps nurse and entertain.
1854- The family begin to finally feel comfortable. They move to a slightly nicer area of the slums, no longer in a back to back, but in a two-up, two-down, with a latrine in the back garden. In the early winter, this proves to be their undoing when the communal water source is found to be contaminated and is blocked off, but cholera has already spread. By Christmas, Rose has died from the infection and Alice follows not long after. John is totally distraught and become a recluse. At barely six, Mary can remember little of this time, but remembers being very, very scared.
1855- Barely within the new year, Johnny passes away and within a fortnight Alice-May and Harry have also sucumbed to the disease. Realising her father is powerless to help, Betsan enters into talks with her employers. Just before easter, they move to the carriage house belonging to her employers. Being only one floor above the stables, it is distinctly smaller but also healthier and cleaner. Betsan is trained as a lady’s maid after her charge passes away, and 17 year old William is given the position of head groom, and later coach-man. 11 year old Jack is apprenticed to a local cobbler, and Nellie and Mary are educated by the lady of the house who had lost all her children and feels a duty to them.
1856- John is promoted to foreman, and the family move to the very edges of a middle-class suburb. Jack begins to go to school part-time with Mary and Nellie at the local free-school, with Betsan and William remaining in service. It is this year Mary has her first enjoyable memory, when she comes top of her class. She also shows her first sign of magic by repairing a tear in her sunday best. Her father largely ignores this, thinking she is merely a good actress and doesn’t inform her siblings.
1859- Betsan marries to a local shop-owner, and begins work there with Jack. John is promoted yet again, and now manages the entire factory. William begins working as a valet, something he enjoys immensely due to the trust his employer places in him. The family relocate again, to a thoroughly-middle class suburb. With Betsan and William no longer living at home, Jack, Nelly and Mary get their own room each and they have running water which is a total novelty. Nelly goes off to a local grammar-school and then later a nursing college due to her ambition to help stop family tragedies such as their own.
1860-68Mary receives her Hogwarts letter and her family finally get an explanation as to her abilities that the family at large has been in denial of. In September, Mary is sorted into Gryffindor and aims to make her family as proud as possible. She excels at school and tended to be a little outspoken, but was still made prefect. Upon graduation she attends the coming out ball but declines a courtship by Mr James Hartwright as she does not feel ready to settle down. He is devastated, having been close to her since her second (his fifth) year, but wishes her well. They lose contact and she becomes a governess to a wizarding family in her native wales.
1871- Whilst taking the children she cares for to the Victoria and Albert Museum, she runs into Mr Hartwright again who works nearby. They begin courting and just before New Year announce their engagement.
1872- Mary becomes Mrs Hartwright early in the spring, and she moves with him to his modest but respectable town house in london.
1873-The Hartwrights are blessed with a daughter, Mabel. She is healthy and strong, and the couple are overjoyed.
1874- The family grow again with the addition of James Jr, their first son.
1876- Mary has her final child, Polly. With the family budget getting increasingly stretched as the company James works for slowly goes under, Mary takes up teaching piano and singing lessons.
1877- The family are forced to leave London owing to the prices, instead moving to Bath. This year, Mary meets with a group of female magical women's rights activist and becomes a member of their organisation, her husband wholeheartedly supporting her.
1881-Mary becomes leader of the protest group, but her initial elation is crushed less than three days later when her husband takes ill with a fever and dies. She goes into incredibly deep mourning, having truly loved him, with only her family being of comfort to her. Mary still attends the women's rights meetings and leads the group, only increasing in her convictions. Later this year, she discovers her husband had been heavily investing in stocks, which she slowly begins to sell off to boost their already generous widow’s pension.
1883- In late 1883, she comes out of mourning and decides to sell the house to move her family to Hogsmeade so that her children are closer to the magical community and also in belief that she will be able to appeal to more like minded women.
1884-She is rather excited for the elections and is planning to look at forming a women’s rights society, like in Bath. so they can go corset burning in the park or something
Personality:
A true Gryffindor, Mary has a strong force of conviction and an incredibly dauntless attitude to life. She is a strong believer through hard work, you can achieve anything you set your mind to, and isn’t one to shy away from a challenge. She is highly loyal and will never forget a good deed, but to those who do not like her Mary can come across as very forceful and overly enthusiastic. Despite being quite alternative, she is still a doting mother and rather matronly, however she is not one to hide the realities of life from anyone owing to her rather hard upbringing.
