Appearance:

Eliza has never been a great beauty, but there’s nothing necessarily striking about her features, either, so she has always been easily overlooked. Her mousy brown hair is often frizzy and unruly, and her brown eyes are equally unremarkable. Her nose is a little wider than average, and her lips are thin, though she does have a delicate jawline that might be pretty on someone else’s face. She has always been short, and currently stands at 4’ 10”, and doesn’t expect to grow much taller at all. She has little figure to speak of, despite having always been on the softer side. She is right handed.

History:

THE O’CONNORS are an Irish, middle-class, halfblooded family who have always sought to climb their way into the upper crust of society, some members being more successful than others in achieving that goal. Finnian, the first son of a first son, was primed for success -- until he fell in love with a Muggle seamstress. eloped with her, and was disowned. Though he lost his inheritance and fell to the working class, Finnian and Portia were very much in love, and he had no qualms about living primarily as a muggle, working as a tutor for the wealthier sort, for his family’s safety.

1869 | Eliza is born, and proves to be the only child of Finnian and Portia. The family lives modestly, but is rich in love. Though Finnian has largely discarded the trappings of his middle class raising by this time, he wants to ensure Eliza is learned, and she begins tagging along to lessons with his more fortunate pupils at a young age.

1875 | Eliza shows her first sign of magic by vanishing away a mess in the kitchen. Finnian explains the less sordid parts of his upbringing in bits and pieces over the coming years -- including Hogwarts. Having had the importance of education impressed upon her early on, Eliza can’t wait to begin her magical studies.

1880 | Eliza receives her invitation to Hogwarts! She’s beyond ecstatic, naturally, and being surrounded by magic every day is enchanting to her, considering she’s largely been raised as a muggle. Aboard the Hogwarts Express, she becomes friends with [Gemma HI BEX], an upper class girl she ends up sharing a compartment with. The Sorting Hat considers placing her in Ravenclaw with [Gemma], but settles on Hufflepuff instead due to her loyal, kindhearted, and hardworking nature. They continue to be friends, anyway, and she makes some of her own in Hufflepuff house.

1881 | Eliza begins her second year at Hogwarts. In October, a fire breaks out in her parents’ neighborhood in Belfast, destroying their home and killing both her mother and father. Though the O’Connors had disowned her father, once her uncle Alistair hears of her predicament, he sees an opportunity. Recently married (and vaulted into the upper class due to both his heiress wife and a successful business), Alistair makes the girl an offer: he will take her in and fund her education, on the condition that she comes back to work as governess for his children after she graduates Hogwarts. Eliza sees little choice in the matter, as she is unwilling to give up her education and unsure of what she would do otherwise, and reluctantly accepts.

She stays at Hogwarts for Christmas, both glad that she doesn’t have to suffer her uppity purist relatives’ company and depressed because dead parents.

1882 | Summer holiday sees her spend her first extended period with her newfound “family”, and she immediately comes to regret her decision re: selling her soul. When they aren’t ignoring her, they inadvertently insult her nearly every time they open their mouths, and it’s clear that they will spoil their children to death. Not to mention their status as nouveau-riche is painfully obvious.

There is always Hogwarts, however, and Eliza chooses Ancient Studies and Ancient Runes as her electives beginning her third year. [Gemma] takes them as well, along with [Pippa HI JENNY] and [Felicity], two girls in their year who annoy Eliza to no end. They often pull pranks targeting her, especially if they think they won’t get caught -- and they never do, until one day Eliza decides she’s had enough. They sabotage one of her brews in Potions class (again), and Eliza snaps, upturning their cauldron out of spite despite [Gemma]’s attempts to talk her down. All four of the girls end up serving detention… and, bizarrely, sort of reach a truce.

1883 | The girls grow closer, and after being assigned on an Ancient Studies project together about secret societies, decide to create one of their own. Though they don’t do much other than snark at the sillier girls in their year and try to goad [Gemma] to tell them their futures, but Eliza is happy just to have some sense of belonging.

1884 | Aunt Martha comes down with the laughing plague, but manages to recover after a near brush with death. This makes her develop an even more severe case of hypochondria, and Eliza wants to smother her with her pillow. The fire also leaves the O’Connors untouched. Mercy’s first act of magic is to turn Eliza’s hair blue just before she’s to return to Hogwarts for her fifth year. Eliza decides there is no justice in the world.

1885 | Eliza sits her OWLs and further contemplates murder. She dreams of working up the nerve to defy her guardians' wishes and carve her own path... or meeting a good man to save her from their tyranny.
