Dreams of a Faraway land

[Alethea Hathaway]

When it came to what Alethea wanted, the girl wasn't quiet sure. She loved working at the museum, but she felt like something was missing from her life. She felt like she'd done something terribly wrong in school and hadn't been able to make amends to whomever she'd offended. 

But she couldn't think about the past, she had to focus on the future.

Really, all she was doing at this point was subtly watching others as she walked around.

It was Casper's lunch break, his favorite part of a working day. He had forgotten to bring his sandwich with him to work that morning and decided it was fate telling him to treat himself to something else and so he was browsing the possibilities Diagon Alley had to offer. Ice cream for lunch was very tempting, but it was quite cold out and that made a cold lunch a little less inviting.

He stopped in front of one place to peer through the window. While he wasn't a man short of means, he wasn't the wealthiest of men either and if it was a terribly fancy place then it wasn't really worth having lunch by oneself there.

Alethea had stopped walking around and somehow had stopped next to him. She forced a small smile as she glanced over at the ministry worker. She muttered a soft "Hello." to him, not wanting to speak any louder since she was always talking louder than she preferred while giving a tour of the many items, most of which had a historical significance.

At first he didn't notice the young lady who had walked up to him, it wasn't until she spoke that he was aware of her. "Oh!" he blurted out in surprise, recoiling slightly as he did. "Erm, uh, Excuse me, Miss." He felt a familiar heat rising to his cheeks and felt rather at a loss for what to say. Did she want something of him? Was he in her way?

With his blush rising, she felt her own cheeks flaming. "How are you?" she finally asked after a few awkward moments. She'd never ran into someone that could make her blush without trying. Maybe it was because she didn't run into many people she didn't know. She never did have much time for silly crushes, but it was painfully obvious how shy they both were, and somehow that made the atmosphere between them seem even more awkward.

How was he? The familiarity of the question made Casper wonder if he had met the young lady before but somehow forgotten it? He hoped that wasn't the case but he was now deeply worried he would now offend her if he acted as though he had never met her. Surely he would have remembered her? It wasn't often that he met young ladies, after all. Tentatively, he replied. "Erm... Alright." Why was every encounter he had with a female so uncomfortable? "And um... How are... you?" Maybe if he just pretended as though he knew who she was, he'd spare her feeling and miraculously remember her.

Alethea could see it in his face. Did he think they knew eachother? Did they know each other? "I am also alright." well, if that wasn't an awkward response she didn't know what was.

This was very possibly one of the most peculiar interactions Casper could ever remember having with another human being. Well he supposed it wasn't really that strange, but it was uncomfortable and he still didn't know if they were acquaintances or not. He was starting to strongly suspect, however, that they were not. "That's- That's good." Stranger or not, he wouldn't wish ill on her. He really didn't know what else to say, had she approached with a purpose in mind? Was he maybe in her way? He didn't think he was blocking anything important...
