This is at the ball, idk if there's meant to be a forum or not, just I'm posting it here because I need to save Patience and I can't wait any longer for the forum because Soph and MJ are literally doing the AC as I write this

Patience had never particularly liked Halloween. She didn't dislike it either, but her feelings towards Halloween had decidedly never been positive. There was too much decision for her liking, what to be, what to wear and how to execute the costume. She had to think about Chester as well.

She was jealous of Chester in a small way, for in the end someone would shout at him and tell him what to wear. Patience wished someone did that for her, perhaps if she dropped a few hints Scarlett's way. She was sure that Scarlett would oblige, but would Patience's limited hint-dropping skills be enough? Probably not, they never were.

So there they were. She and Chester at the Halloween ball of the Macmillans. Her costume was pretty, but nowhere near adventurous, so Patience felt quite at ease amongst the other people, some of whom's costumes were quite outlandish and a few more who had missed the mark and had sunk into the depths of ugliness - put Patience was never one to judge.

"Is Scarlett coming tonight?" Patience asked her husband conversationally, skimming the crowd casually to see for her friend/step-daughter, before looking back to her husband.

Fancy dress was rather easy for Chester- all it took was a mask and his old army uniform, and we was set. Far more pressing was the fact that Cyan was now nearly five, and there was no sign of his wife carrying another child. He occasionally got his hopes up, but it was inevitably in vain and it would have just been a bad day or something. He was sure his wife wanted another one too, and he’d never had trouble getting a woman in the family way- and neither did it seem had Patience’s parents!

His wife’s comment brought him back to the present, at least momentarily. “Indeed, she said she’d be here, although her husband was not attending, I do believe.”

Oh yay. Scarlett was indeed about. Patience would be glad to see her friend again. Patience did hope that she didn't spend too much time with Mr Slughorn, for that was entirely possible if Mr Bulstrode was not to be around. People did question things like that, and while Patience wasn't entirely concerned with what other people thought (for everyone forget about small rumours after so long), she hardly wanted Chester to discover his daughter's indiscretions.

"Oh what a shame," Patience replied, in reference to Mr Bulstrode's absence (for she had to say something about it), "But at least Scarlett is here. Although she has never been one to let a lack of husband get in her way of doing enjoyable things." And no, Patience did not count Mr Slughorn in that.

“Indeed.” Chester commented lightly, totally oblivious to his daughter’s indiscreetions- and his wife’s knowledge of them. As far as he was concerned, he couldn’t really tell one younger dandy from another and wouldn’t have been any the wiser if his daughter had turned up with a different man on her arm. Well, in all liklihood. He was really nearly always distracted by his various projects.

“I do hope you never find me a hindrance to your pleasures, my dear?” He asked with a chuckle.

"Of course not," Patience replied, because in the end she hardly cared if she stood and spoke to Chester or spoke to some random socialite - actually upon saying that Patience much preferred Chester for the socialite would be far too happy and chipper for Patience's liking, "You are as good company as anyone could be." While Patience did realise how her apathy could be mistaken for rudeness, she was far too apathetic to do anything about it.

Rosa would like to add a second paragraph but she has no idea what to write. Please excuse that, this, and the fact that she's writing in the third person.

“I shall take that as a compliment, my dear.” Chester chuckled, not taking any offence by it at all. He knew his wife’s slight social apathy well enough by that time to not take any more note of it that one might take not of a hearth rug that has been in front of the fire for all your life. It had probably been to his advantage- if she had not suffered four failed seasons, she probably never would have become his bride.
